The Price Of Peace
The wedding dress felt like a prison. Alina Rivers stared at herself in the cracked mirror of her childhood bedroom, her hands were shaking as she touched the white lace that seemed to mock her. At eighteen, she should have been dreaming of college, of freedom, of finding her true mate. Instead, she was about to marry a stranger - a cold, ruthless Alpha who had made it clear that this was nothing more than a business arrangement. "Alina, honey, it's time." Her mother's voice was soft but strained. Margaret Rivers had aged years in the past month, ever since the pack elders delivered their ultimatum. "I know, Mom." Alina's voice barely rose above a whisper. She turned away from the mirror, unable to look at the girl who was about to sacrifice her future for her pack's survival. The Crescent Moon Pack was dying. Their territory had been attacked three times in the past year by rogues, their numbers dwindling, and all their resources had stretched thin. When Alpha Lucien Blackthorn of the Shadow Ridge Pack offered an alliance through marriage, the elders didn't even think twice before accepting the offer. The fact that Alina had no choice in the matter seemed irrelevant to everyone except her. "He's a good man, Alina. He is also powerful. He'll protect you." Her mother's words sounded like it was rehearsed, as if she'd been trying to convince herself as much as her daughter. Alina wanted to laugh. Good man? Lucien Blackthorn was known throughout the region as the Ice Alpha—cold, calculating, and utterly without mercy. She'd seen him only once, during the arrangement negotiations, and his dark eyes had looked right through her as if she didn't exist. The walk to the ceremony felt like a death march. The small chapel was filled with members from both packs, but the tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a knife. Everyone knew this wasn't about love, it was about survival and power. Alpha Lucien stood at the altar in a perfectly tailored black suit, his dark hair slicked back, his face an expressionless mask. At twenty-six, he was devastatingly handsome in a way that made women throughout the territory whisper his name in hushed, dreamy tones. But his beauty was cold, untouchable, like a statue carved from ice. As Alina walked down the aisle, her small hand tucked into her father's arm, she felt Lucien's gaze on her for the very first time. She dared to look up and immediately regretted it. His dark eyes were studying her with the same detached interest one might show a new piece of furniture, he was assessing her worth, finding her lacking. The ceremony was very quick and impersonal. When the elder asked if they would take each other as mates, Lucien's "I do" was flat and emotionless. Alina's voice cracked as she whispered her agreement. "You may now kiss your mate," the elder announced. Lucien stepped closer, and for a moment, Alina caught a scent that made her wolf stir, pine and rain and something darker, more dangerous. But when his lips touched hers, the kiss was nothing more than a cold press of flesh, over before it began. There was no spark, no recognition, no marking bite that would seal their bond. He pulled away without meeting her eyes and turned away to accept congratulations from the crowd. Alina stood there, feeling smaller and more invisible than she had ever felt. The reception was a blur of forced smiles and meaningless conversations. Alina sat at the head table, picking at her food while Lucien conducted business with various pack members, acting as if she didn't exist. When someone asked about the marking ceremony, he simply said, "Later," in a tone that suggested the topic was closed. But Alina caught the looks, the pitying glances from other wolves, the whispered conversations that stopped when she approached. Everyone knew what it meant when an Alpha didn't immediately mark his new mate. Rejection. Disinterest. A marriage in name only. "Alina." Lucien's voice cut through her thoughts. She looked up to find him standing beside her chair, his face still that unreadable mask. "It's time to go." The ride to his territory was silent except for the hum of the engine. Alina stared out the window at the passing forest, trying not to think about what will come next. She had grown up hearing stories about mating bonds, about the passion and connection between true mates. But sitting next to this cold stranger, she felt nothing but hatred for him. Shadow Ridge territory was beautiful and intimidating in equal measure. The pack house was more like a mansion, all dark stone and towering windows that seemed to peer down at her with judgment. As they pulled up to the entrance, pack members gathered to welcome their new Luna, but their expressions were guarded, their expression curious rather than welcoming. "I'll show you to your room," Lucien said as they entered the grand foyer. "My room?" Alina stopped walking. "Not... our room?" For the first time all day, Lucien looked directly at her, and she saw something flicker in his dark eyes, something that seems like irritation, maybe, or impatience. "I thought you'd prefer your own space. This marriage is only for the alliance between our packs, nothing more. I won't pretend otherwise." The words hit her like a physical blow. She'd expected this, but hearing it said so bluntly still made her chest tighten with humiliation and something else—disappointment? She pushed the feeling away. "Of course," she managed to say, lifting her chin with as much dignity as she could muster. "That's what I prefer too." Something shifted in his expression, but it was gone before she could even think to interpret it. He led her up a sweeping staircase to a wing of the house that felt separate from the rest. Her room was so much beautiful with all soft colors and elegant furniture, but it might as well have been a cage. "Dinner is at seven if you'd like to join the pack. If not, someone will bring you a tray of food to your room for you." He paused at the door, his hand on the handle. "The pack will expect you to fulfill your duties as Luna eventually, but I'll give you enough time to adjust." And then he was gone, leaving Alina alone in her beautiful prison. She sank onto the bed, still wearing her huge wedding dress, and she then finally allowed herself to cry. Not for the marriage that she'd lost, truthfully she'd never really expected love. But for the girl she'd been this morning, who had still harbored secret dreams of finding her true mate, of being wanted and cherished by her true mate. Now she was nothing more than a peace treaty dressed in white lace. As night fell over Shadow Ridge territory, Alina changed into simple clothes and she began to unpack her few belongings. She would survive this. She would find a way to make a place for herself here, to protect her pack and fulfill her duties as Luna. But as she closed her eyes to sleep that first night, strange dreams began to disturb her, visions of silver light and ancient symbols, and of a woman's voice calling out her name loudly . In her dreams, power thrummed through her veins like liquid fire, and she felt anything but powerless. She woke with tears on her cheeks and the lingering sensation that something was awakening inside her, something that had been sleeping for far too long. What Alina doesn't know is that her dreams are the first sign of her awakening power, and that Alpha Lucien's rejection of her has nothing to do with her worth and it has everything to do with his own dark secrets...
