Chapter three "I'm sorry, I was only doing my chores." Kendra said as Laura stood by her, fuming. "Swear that you did not eavesdrop, you cunning liar! You always find a way to find out things about me!" Laura shouted. Kendra wished the ground would at that point open and swallow her. She feared what Laura was going to do to her. "I do not wish to set eyes on your face anymore." Laura said in a calmer tone. Kendra sighed when she heard the calmness. She hoped that was the end of the tirade and abuses, but she was soon surprised by Laura's action as she took hold of her hand and pulled her along. "I am not merely making jokes when I say I do not want to see your face, you little witch! Come with me." She said as she pulled Kendra on. Kendra followed, partially expecting to get beaten up and half expecting that she was only going to be assigned more chores in addition to all she already had to do. " I'm sorry my _" " Shut up and follow me!" Laura cut her off before she could finish. They got to an old room that Kendra was sure had never been opened while she was at the pack house and Laura produced a key with which she opened the room and stepped inside. Once they were inside, she slammed the door shut and started to rummage about the different piles in the room. "My lady, I'm sorry but my chores are far from finished for the morning. Do you need any help finding anything so that we can both leave __" "I do not ask you anything so stop talking!" Laura snapped. Kendra fell silent once again and stood awkwardly by the door until Laura turned around to face her, having found what she was looking for. "Yes. Here it is!" She cried with delight as she held up the old ugly mask in her hand. Kendra could not help wondering what she was going to do next. Perhaps, try to strangle her with it? "Here," Laura handed to her. Kendra took hold of the ugly old mask and kept staring at Laura to supply information regarding the mask. "You shall wear that, henceforth." Laura said at last. Involuntarily, the mask fell from Kendra's hand.. she was more than surprised as she tried to make sense of Laura's new assignment but she was soon brought back to reality by a resounding slap from Laura which jolted her back to reality "When I said I did not want to ever see your face again, you thought I was joking?!" Laura asked. At this time, Kendra had begun to cry. She often wondered what she had ever done to Laura to deserve all the cruelty and the wickedness meted out on her. "Now stop crying and listen to me!" Laura commanded. Kendra's hand moved to her cheeks and she wiped off the tears that had trailed down her cheeks. "You will wear this mask as long as you are in the pack house or it's premises. No more shall anyone who visits the pack see your face! The day you take off the mask while you are in the pack house, I shall scar your face and then it shall no longer be delightful to those who see you!" Kendra was lost for words as she stood there. " Now put on the mask!" Laura commanded and she did. It was ugly and old and poorly kept but she had to wear it just as she had commanded. Only her eyes, nose and her lips were visible in the mask, every other part of her face was well hidden away in the mask and she hoped that pleased Laura enough. "That's perfect. The mask look just exactly as I had envisioned. Now let us see who will pay attention to your stupid pretty face!" She took a deep breath and continued "I hate to admit that you are the most beautiful of us, but I shall constantly remind you of how happy I will be when I finally get rid of you. For now, enjoy hiding behind the mask!" She said with glee before hustling Kendra out of the room. She shut the door once they were out on the hallway and left Kendra to stand there and get acquainted with a mask that was forced on her face, barely able to hold back the hot tears that kept trailing down her cheeks Kendra was uncomfortable as she carried out all the chores she had for the day with the mask on her face.. she was not used to it and she hated the idea of it but she had no choice. Each time she ran into Laura, she got laughed at and jeered and eventually, received a stern warning to never take off the mask no matter what she did and the errand she had to run. Kendra returned to the dilapidated cabin to her mother when it was late at night and she had finished all she had to do at the pack house. "Why do you have a mask on?" Her mother asked, examining her face as she helped her take off the mask. "Laura made me wear it. She does not want to see my face neither does she want me to be paid attention or paid compliments by anyone who finds me beautiful." Kendra said forlornly. "That's cruel but neither the Alpha nor the luna would want to listen to complaints regarding their daughter and her Ill treatment of you!" Kendra's mother cried. Kendra sat staring at the mask which was to now be a part of her day to day clothing and contemplated burning it by throwing it inside the small fire cackling at the fire place but decided against it. Of course she would suffer whatever penalty awaited her alone and there was not one person who could stop Laura from meting out all the mean treatment on her.
