CHAPTER 2

Atticus Timber was the CEO and owner of Imperial Telecommunication Company Ltd, one of the biggest institutions in the state. His employees always saw him as being a man of very high standards and vigor. He would not hesitate to sack a staff member on the spot anytime he isn’t pleased by their work. Atticus usually got on the nerve of his employees as his own way of knowing how loyal they were to him. He could ask an employee on his first day to prepare him a cup of coffee or get his shoes polished, and they dared not show resistance or non-compliance. His intimidating gaze and domineering body structure usually got them back to their senses. Isabella was a different employee though. She was his secretary but seemed more like a girlfriend. Well, Atticus had made it clear to her severally that she was only his employee and he couldn’t marry her, especially after she was diagnosed as unable to give birth. All that Atticus needed was an heir and Isabella, despite being dear to him, couldn't give him that. Isabella was smoldering as she sat on the edge of Atticus’ desk while her boss sat on the revolving office chair as he twisted side by side appraising Isabella’s hot body with his electric brown eyes. From her long brown legs to her sexy thick thighs that fitted perfectly in her black mini-skirt, Atticus couldn’t help but throw darting eyes towards Isabella as he reached for her thigh. Isabella retracted her gaze, pulling off Atticus’ hand gently as it was making its way up her thigh. “Calm your nerves, boss,” she grinned, her little smile showing some signs of worry. “What is it?” Atticus inquired, his gaze still fixed on Isabella as he pulled off one of his buttons as if to intentionally show off his broad chest. Isabella’s eyes lasered through Atticus’ shirt and into his chest, but she quickly maintained her worrisome face. “The insurance” She scoffed. “I am tired of reminding and telling you about why you should have life insurance.” “You can’t foresee future debts that could happen to your company. Imagine having an insurance company that takes care of all these,” she smote her breast sharply. Isabella had always wanted to marry Atticus despite his insistence on having an heir and knowing that she couldn’t offer him that. But there was something Isabella needed more than marriage. She was a sucker for power, fame, and money. She was ready to do anything to have all of it to herself. Her efforts to convince Atticus to donate his money towards life insurance for himself was only a ploy to inherit his entitlements. She didn’t go after his properties or fought for a bigger position. No! Isabella was smarter than that. She knew that if she went after his money and became his wife, acquiring the properties would be automatic. Atticus tried to keep a poker face, but a little smile played at the corner of his lips betraying his intention. Isabella got the clue and popped her eyes wide open in excitement. “You’ve done it?” Atticus shook his head in affirmation. “There are a few details left, but it’s all done”. There it was! One problem out of the way for Isabella. The next was to find a way to get him hitched. Isabella made gentle little steps as she pressed her shoulders down, leaning forward to hug Atticus in excitement. Atticus lowered his head and exhaled worryingly. “We still have to deal with your medical condition though”. “I don’t know why you seem less concerned about it,” Atticus put up a concerned face as Isabella scoffed in displeasure, returning to take her place at the edge of Atticus’ long office desk. Isabella wore a wearied posture as she flared her nostrils. “You know what the doctors are saying. I need a bone marrow transplant”. Isabella, despite her ambition to have money and power by any means, was diagnosed with Leukemia and needed a bone marrow transplant before her condition got worse. “Well, you should be thanking me because I already found you a solution,” Atticus giggled in excitement. Isabella’s face widened with ecstasy as she grinned. “How come? What magic are you going to pull off this time around?” Atticus narrowed his eyes to the office door to make sure no one was peeping around. He signaled for her to come closer before he whispered into her ears. “I found you a donor for the bone marrow transplant”. “Really?” Isabella popped her eyes open as she furrowed her brow. “Who is the donor?” Isabella’s Leukemia needed an urgent solution before it got worse and the doctors told her to find a willing donor as soon as possible. She could barely stand on her feet for long and she felt weak at any slight inconvenience but Isabella was a damn competitive animal! She always maintained a positive outlook and didn't miss a day at work . Well, it's not like she was interested in her job only. She had other interests that were more important to her. One of them was the rich bloke sitting right in front of her staring seductively with his aim only to get into her pants. ‘I can always use that as my leverage though,’ she reasoned inwardly. Atticus stared blankly into the air. “Well, let's just say she is a good Samaritan”. **** Meanwhile, Ivy, who had already signed the marriage contract, felt her face burning as she waited impatiently for the man she was meant to marry. How would he treat her? Would he allow her to continue her relationship with her lover whilst being married to her? After all, it’s only a marriage that will last a few years. Why would he want her for 3 years though? Ivy’s face was swollen with nervousness as the thoughts couldn't stop coming into her head. The sound of a knock on the door jilted her back to reality. “Who’s there?” James asked in an expectant tone as he wobbled towards the door. “I am here on behalf of my boss for ehh…I…” a muscular-looking man in a three-piece suit and dark sunglasses uttered as soon as James opened the door. It wasn't difficult to tell that he was a bouncer. “Ivy, yes, Ivy,” James kept a steady gaze at the big man behind the door. “He’s waiting over there,” the man pointed towards a tinted SUV. James soon withdrew his gaze in response to the sneering look that the man gave him. “She will be here soon,” James cleared his throat anxiously as he rushed off to where Ivy was sitted with her face buried in her hands. “Come on, come on,” James hurried Ivy with the repeated clasp of his hands. Ivy gave her dad an irritated look before wobbling off the sofa. “Cheer up,” James breathed into Ivy’s face as he whispered anxiously. “Remember why we are doing this.” James bowed his head slightly as he handed over the scroll to the bouncer before he escorted Ivy to his boss as Ivy’s face was darkened with worry. They soon got to the car as the suited bouncer opened the back door, escorting Ivy into the boss’ welcoming hands. “You are welcome,” a deep voice made its way into Ivy’s ears. She opened her eyes and her gaze met a handsome man in his mid-thirties. He wore a well-trimmed beard and his rough brown hair and piercing brown eyes almost matched each other. He didn't seem like a tyrant like her father, at least, but his strong jawline suggested he wasn't someone to be taken for granted. Perhaps he wouldn't trouble her so much, but what could he want from her? “Come on, move closer to me. I don't bite and even if I did, I am your husband now,” he smirked, adjusting his designer suit confidently. Ivy, with her heart skipping several beats, moved closer to him nervously. Her hands were shaking as she tried to fold it into a fist to avoid being noticed. She didn't want to put up a weak face, especially when dealing with the masculine beast sipping a glass of fruit juice just beside her. Two other young men, one of them dressed in a scrub and a white hand glove, moved onto her right side as she adjusted. ‘What business would a doctor have here? Why was he putting on his stethoscope? Ivy looked up at the doctor with dead-filled eyes, her heart pounding heavily, as he took out a syringe.
