CHAPTER 1
Ivy finished her chores for the day and was ready to rest her weary back on the bench when she heard her dad’s gruesome voice. This was the 4th time her dad would call her only to ask the same questions. It was either to ask if she had washed the bathroom or cleaned the window casings. Many times, she felt as if she wasn’t his daughter. ‘He could have just gotten a maid,’ she reasoned. “Yes!” She raised her voice, jumping off the sofa as she answered her dad’s call. Ivy exhaled hard with a labored breath while she approached her dad’s dirty room. For some reason Ivy’s dad, James, never liked her cleaning his room but why would she care anyway? She was his daughter and not his maid. She was already tired of the daily b*****e she had to face living with her old man. It was high time she got married and left her childhood home. After all, her brother, Raymond, had already gotten married. James laid his back on the bed and arched his arm while rolling his eyebrows softly. “Have a seat” Ivy gazed at the emptiness of her dad’s room as she found a little stool just beside his bed. She crossed her legs patiently wondering what her dad had to say this time with her demeanor showing confusion. Ivy wondered why her dad would have her seat in his room. It was weird. Neither her dad nor her late mum treated her like a child that should be loved and it only got worse since her mum’s death. He paused for a bit as he picked his nose carelessly while gazing at the ceiling. “Pick up that scroll for me,” he finally uttered in between a long, careless yawn. Ivy’s dad, James, determined not to change his lazy posture, stretched his arm painfully to receive the scroll. He sighed heavily, finally sitting up and sitting on the edge of his bed close to Ivy. With his face wrinkled, James rolled his tongue swiftly. “Come on, take a close look at this” Ivy put on a suspicious look as she moved closer to her dad. She dimmed her eye a little and moved her head forward to get a better view. “A marriage contract?” Ivy exclaimed, her eyes wide open in surprise as she saw the title of the writing on the scroll boldly stated. Ivy scampered through the next page of the scroll with her heart skipping. “I hope this doesn't involve me?” James moved his lips to and fro, plastering a frown across his face. “What about it?” “Don’t you think you are old enough to take some responsibility,” he raked his fingers into his hair before picking his nose again. “When did you come up with this?” Ivy questioned with fire in her eyes. Her skin was beginning to crawl with irritation. “If you were tired of your daughter living with you, you could have just mentioned it instead of bringing up this stupid contract,” Ivy swallowed a bit. James’ gaze was fixed on Ivy and a little mocking smile played at the corner of his lips. He seemed to have no worry with Ivy’s protests. “You know how it has been these past few days,” James said, his tone more gentle and convincing. “The herdsmen have taken over our farmland and we have nothing to feed on or sell. A billionaire has offered to use his connections to wade them away but you have to sign first. It’s high time you became useful to this family after all,” he added, taking a pair of scissors as he trimmed his grey beards in front of the mirror while observing Ivy’s reaction. Ivy’s dad and her late mother worked tirelessly on their farmland which was their only means of survival and feeding for many years. It was known as their family’s business but things began to go downhill when a herdsmen group named Zucchini invaded their land with armed weapons of all kinds injuring those who worked on it. Ivy’s mother, Pamela was killed by these herdsmen to the dismay of Ivy and her father, James. Ivy adjusted her sitting posture and wore a serious look. “Dad, this contract marriage can’t work. I have a lover already and we are going to take things to….” “Shut up!” James yelled, slamming the scissors on the little stool that his mirror rested on with his eyebrows furrowed as he turned back to face Ivy. “Are you listening to yourself? Do you think you are just going to run off to any i***t who might offer you a chance at marriage” James’ demeanour was filled with fury as he continued, “who exactly do you think you are telling me you have a lover somewhere?” “Do you think we have forgotten how you caused your mother’s death?” Ivy’s eyes opened in surprise with her eyeballs popping sharply. “Dad!” She could barely find the words to explain her disappointment as tears formed a cloud in her eyes. Ivy’s mother, Pamela died, on a rainy day when she went to the farmland and was attacked and killed by the Zucchini herdsmen group. The day prior to Pamela’s death, Ivy was sent to the farmland to harvest the crops and food products after they got a tip that the group were going to invade their farmland again. Ivy was only able to harvest a quarter of the crops and Pamela had to go the next day only for her to be killed by the herdsmen. James had always angled at Ivy for being the cause of her mother’s death but on this day, he wasn’t mincing words. “Don’t dad me!” He interjected, darting hard glares towards Ivy. “You know as much as I do that if you had just done what you needed to do, your mother wouldn’t have had to cure your mess”. Ivy’s tears had already made their way down her cheeks but she rubbed it off with the back of her light palm. She knew that her dad had very little interest in her emotions. “What could I have done? Raymond is also your child and he’s not here, is he? It’s me taking care of you,” she hit her chest repeatedly signaling her importance. “Besides, it wasn't possible to harvest those crops in a day. I did my best,” Ivy flared her nostrils while swaying her hands in disgust. “Whatever you say, but just sign it,” James wide mouthed, flinging a pen towards Ivy with the scroll on her lap. “You are lucky you are getting married to a billionaire and it’s only for 3 years,” he snorted while picking his nose for the upteenth time. “If I were you, I would behave well so that he would consider taking you for more years,” he scorned. Ivy felt defeated. Food supplies were not coming and she and her dad were probably going to die of hunger if they were not able to use their farmland soon. She picked up the pen from her lap while she blew her nose pitifully with her tears now very evident. ‘Perhaps, this can right my wrongs,’ she reasoned within herself. As she was about to sign, James picked up his phone after a loud ring tone engulfed the room. “How is her medical condition?” A boastful voice made its way to James’ ears and further to Ivy’s humble abode. Ivy trembled in fear. Her heart started pounding loudly as she gaped at her dad. ‘Is that the billionaire who wants to marry me for 3 years? His tone doesn’t sound nice at all’. “She has an urgent assignment once she signs the contract, don’t waste my time”.
