The Unseen
It started with a feeling. Not a sound, not a sight, just an eerie sensation of being watched. Emily brushed it off as stress. Finals week at university was notorious for triggering paranoia in even the most grounded students. But the feeling persisted. One night, while studying in the library, she noticed something peculiar. The same young man seemed to be in every aisle she wandered into, always just within her peripheral vision. His face was nondescript, almost forgettable, yet his presence was unnerving. Emily shook her head, telling herself it was coincidence. The library was crowded; of course, she’d see familiar faces. By midnight, she decided to call it quits. As she walked back to her dorm, the campus was eerily quiet, the only sound being her footsteps echoing against the pavement. She quickened her pace, the hairs on her neck prickling as the feeling of being watched intensified. In her room, she locked the door, double-checking it, and drew the curtains shut. She tried to focus on her textbooks, but the feeling gnawed at her. She couldn’t shake the image of that man. Sleep eventually claimed her, though it was restless and filled with strange, unsettling dreams. The next day, Emily’s best friend, Lisa, commented on her haggard appearance. Emily tried to explain the feeling of being watched, but Lisa just laughed it off, suggesting she get more sleep. That evening, Emily decided to stay in her room to study, hoping a quiet environment would help. But the sensation returned, stronger than ever. She closed her books and stared at the blank walls, feeling eyes boring into her. Desperate, she scanned every corner of her room, checking and rechecking that she was alone. Her paranoia mounted until she couldn’t take it anymore. She called campus security, reporting a possible stalker. They assured her they would look into it, but she could tell they thought she was overreacting. Days passed, each more tormenting than the last. The man appeared everywhere—outside her lecture hall, in the cafeteria, even in her dreams. His expression was always blank, but his eyes...they seemed to follow her every move. She became a recluse, skipping classes and avoiding friends, too terrified to step outside. One particularly stormy night, Emily lay in bed, the wind howling outside, when she felt an overwhelming urge to look under her bed. Her rational mind fought it, but the compulsion was too strong. She leaned over, heart pounding, and lifted the bed skirt. Nothing. She laughed nervously, feeling foolish. Suddenly, a low whisper echoed in the room, “I’m here.” Emily froze. The voice was unmistakable, not from under the bed, but from behind her. She turned slowly, her eyes widening in horror as she saw the man standing in the corner, his eyes glowing in the dim light. She screamed, but no sound came out. Her throat was paralyzed with fear. The man stepped closer, his movements slow and deliberate. Emily’s vision blurred as she tried to back away, but her body wouldn’t cooperate. He reached out, his fingers cold as ice, and touched her forehead. Darkness consumed her. When she awoke, she was in a sterile room, the beeping of medical equipment filling her ears. Lisa was by her side, tears streaming down her face. Emily tried to speak, but her voice was weak. “You’re safe now,” Lisa whispered, squeezing her hand. “They found you in your room, unresponsive. You’ve been in a coma for days.” Emily’s mind raced. The man—had he been real? Was it all a hallucination brought on by stress and fear? She looked around, the hospital room plain and unthreatening. For the first time in weeks, the feeling of being watched was gone. Months passed, and Emily slowly regained her strength. She resumed her classes, though she never returned to her old dorm. The feeling of being watched never returned, and the man from her nightmares faded into a distant memory. Life seemed to return to normal. Then, one day, as she walked through the bustling campus, she saw him. The same nondescript man, standing among the crowd, his eyes fixed on her. Her heart skipped a beat, fear gripping her once more. She blinked, and he was gone, swallowed by the sea of faces. Emily’s breath quickened. Maybe it had been her imagination. Maybe she was still healing. But deep down, she knew the truth. He was real, and he was still watching. The nightmare was far from over.
