The last time Shade had to pull me away from him, we couldn't have been older than ten and twelve. Shade had forced me into the cellar pantry. Then, with the help of the omegas, he packed a blanket, two sandwiches, and that stupid flashlight that barely worked. He carried me deep into the woods until I couldn't hear the screaming anymore. We slept in a shelter he built from scrap wood he'd hidden out there the week before. He never said a word about what happened once we got there. He just held my hand and told me not to make a sound. Then he hummed in my ear until the sun started to rise. He was doing it to keep me safe from his father. I didn't realize what he'd saved me from until a day later. We went back to the house, thinking the worst had passed. Shade had kept me out in the woods
