The med bay smelled like too many hormones. I sat on the edge of the padded table while one of the healers wheeled in an ultrasound machine that looked older than most of the council. Wires dangled like limp vines, knobs worn slick from too many decades of use. Shade stood beside me, arms crossed tight, jaw clenched, watching them set it up like they might try to stab me with it. I shot him a look and leaned in closer. "Relax. They're not going to dissect me." The healer didn't even look up. "No promises." She adjusted the settings with the kind of aggression usually reserved for enemies, not equipment. It was pretty clear all of us being pregnant at the same time was wearing on her nerves already.
