Blurb

Lucas is a member of the Old Bloodied Families, a vampire. The war with the stalkers has claimed his lover's life, something he will never forget and will always regret. Cold and aloof, he remains untouchable by anyone around him.

Until a human by name of Tyrathane confronts him. Ty is cocky, too full of himself to be of any good to Lucas. But Ty is also determined, his tenacity is only matched by his ego.

With the fighting straying into the human world, Lucas has been tasked with holding them at bay via a multi-race school. The most excitement he's seen is the occasional fistfight between students. Though, if that is all that happens, Lucas is content. But fate always has a way of coming back around. The stalkers are growing powerful, and far more adventurous.

It's only a matter of time before the front lines of war consume the peace that belongs to the realm of others.

Prologue
"Ahndrai!" His voice screamed, hoarse already from all of his shouting and struggling. Why had he agreed to go with the plan when he knew it was a bad idea? Why had he thought that even though they were outnumbered that they could possibly have a chance? Then again, he hadn't expected Vahn to be a traitor either. Lucas pulled against the binds that held him down on his knees. Of course with each pull they tightened across his body. The bonds were already so tight that breathing was very difficult. The source of his distress though, was Ahndrai just a few feet in front of him. The young boy was held in a tight grip of a black clad man. Ahndrai had gone limp just moments before, the reason for Lucas' scream. A trail of blood was crawling across Ahndrai's pale throat down underneath the black cloth of his clothing. The man who held him was responsible for the blood as he was currently sinking his fangs deep into Ahndrai's neck. It wasn't any ordinary vampire that was latched onto Lucas' lover; it was what was known as a Stalker. Beings that disregarded the rules harbored more than one grimoire for their own selfish purposes and were both power hungry as well as lustful for blood. vampires and Stalkers had been at odds with each other for many years, bordering full on war, until recently. At the moment, though, the reasons for the war and why were not important to Lucas. Ahndrai was being killed right in front of him and he couldn't get out of the trap that had been set for them. His own grimoire didn't have the strength enough to enable him to break free, that or he was just too shocked to think properly. His eyes watched Ahndrai fall slowly in the Stalkers grip, his body curling backwards further and further as the man in black drank more of his blood. Lucas twisted and jerked in the binds, feeling them beginning to cut into his flesh, slicing open his clothing -the schools uniform-. A burn at the edge of his eyes began to take place, and his vision grew watery as he sat there, anguish washing over him. "Ahndrai..." his voice choked. Helplessness was flooding him and he hated the feeling. He wanted nothing more than to help the boy that he was in love with. To sit and be unable to do anything was killing him. As he stared at Ahndrai's pale form, his black hair falling away from his face as his head was tilted backwards; he caught the slightest twitch of Ahndrai's hand. A second later and the human's brilliant green eyes slowly peeled open. This renewed Lucas' hopes and his attempts at freedom. "Release him!" Lucas screamed, straining against the tightening bonds. "Lucas!" The shout from behind him widened his eyes in shock, his body straightening up from his hunched over position. The feminine voice echoed through the room and he was immediately reassured. "L'liya!" Lucas twisted around as best he could, straining his neck to get a glimpse of the other vampire. A growl issued from where her voice had come from just moments before and then right after a blast of power shot right passed Lucas' right ear. He froze, his breath caught in his throat. A hairsbreadth closer and she would have taken his head off. L'liya was obviously very upset, making her quite the dangerous opponent. Her magic shot across the large dome-like room right at the Stalker. Only then did the man lift his head from Ahndrai's throat. Her power nailed the Stalker square in the jaw, knocking him backward. Lucas' boyfriend dropped to the ground in a heap. The bonds left the vampire and he was stumbling across the space between himself and Ahndrai. He dropped down next to the boy's head and pulled him up into his lap, heart pounding in his chest. "Ahn?" Beautiful green eyes slit opened and looked up at Lucas. A bit of a grin spread across the human's face as he lay there, "Hey... Lucas." "It's alright now. Don't worry, you'll be okay. I promise." "Don't make any promises you can't... k-keep," Ahndrai's voice coughed on the last word, giving cause to more dry hacking. Lucas winced at each one. Humans -they were so fragile. Even with a grimoire to protect him, to give him more power than normal humans. Ahndrai was still far too weak. Lucas ground his teeth together, biting his tongue and cursing himself for letting this happen. He shouldn't have allowed Ahndrai to get involved in a war that wasn't even his own. Fighting between vampires and Stalkers wasn't something mere mortals should have been involved in. "It's alright," Lucas said again, softer than before. He wasn't even concentrating on the fight going on around him. The fight that rocked the structure, dust falling over them and the explosion of magic against the stone archways that lines the walls. L'liya was throwing everything she had at the Stalker. None of that mattered to Lucas right then, though. "Hey...I'm happy," the boy said slowly. His body was growing heavier by the second, his face had lost all of its color. The usually brilliantly green eyes that were full of life were dying. "Ahndrai." "Promise me something." The vampire began to shake his head, not liking the direction of the conversation, "What?" "Don't blame yourself." "This is my fault!" He took in a shaking breath as the burning of tears took over again, this time spilling over the lip of his lower lid and streaming down his face, "This is my fault, Ahndrai. I brought you into this and I never should have. I'm sorry... so sorry," his voice hiccupped as he doubled over. "Not... your fault," Ahndrai's voice was losing its strength and soon all that was left was a small smile on his face, but no light in his eyes. Lucas curled over his body, burying his face into Ahndrai's cold chest. He wasn't sure how long he held onto his boyfriend's cold body, or how long he shed tears in anguish. When the hand on his shoulder clenched him tightly all he could do was shake his head and sob even harder. The loss was too much; to add to it, it was his fault. "Lucas." "It's my fault." "Lucas, we have to go." "He's dead because of me." "Lucas!" L'liya's voice snapped at him and she pulled him around roughly to look at her. Pale blonde hair fell in rivets around her face, blood splattering her porcelain face and turning bits of her yellow hair an orange color. Her orange eyes were quite the sight to see, unnatural to say the least, just like his silver ones. "Please..." "No. That's not an answer. Now come on! We don't know where Vahn is and this is a damned Stalkers nest." Lucas allowed her to pull him to his feet. She shoved him towards the exit and retrieved Ahndrai's still form. How they got out of the old stone structure was a blur to him. However, the cold feeling of loss, the emptiness in his chest and soul forever remained.
