CHAPTER ONE- The Blood Moon
The night the Blood Moon rose, my life changed forever. For most wolves, the red-stained sky was an omen — a promise of power, of bonds revealed, of futures rewritten. For me, it was the beginning of a chain I had prayed would never shackle me. The air was heavy, laced with the metallic scent of magic. My bare feet pressed into damp earth at the edge of the forest, my toes curling as though I could hold myself steady against the pull of destiny itself. Above me, the moon climbed higher, glowing like a crimson flame, and my chest tightened with every heartbeat. Tonight was supposed to mark the end of my freedom. Tonight, every unmated wolf in the Crescent Moon Pack would discover their fated mate. As a little girl, I had dreamed of this moment — of meeting someone whose soul matched mine, who would protect me, cherish me, love me without end. But as I grew, the stories of the mate bond turned less into fairytales and more into cages. Wolves who weren’t meant for each other were forced into unhappy unions. Others rejected their mates for power, leaving behind hollow shells. Fate was not always kind. And tonight, I feared she would be cruel to me. “Lyra,” Mariah whispered, tugging on my sleeve. My cousin’s golden hair glowed beneath the eerie moonlight, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. “Do you feel it yet?” I shook my head quickly, though my pulse told a different story. “No.” The lie tasted bitter. Because I did feel it. A strange pull deep inside me — like a tether snapping into place — thrummed in my veins. My wolf stirred beneath my skin, restless, pacing, waiting for me to admit what I already knew. Something was coming. Someone. And my heart trembled with a mixture of dread and longing. The entire pack was gathered in the clearing. Hundreds of wolves, some in human form, others shifted, their pelts gleaming beneath the red moon. Elders whispered prayers to the goddess, mothers clutched the hands of their daughters, and young wolves like me waited with bated breath for the bond to claim them. The ceremonial fire blazed in the center, sparks flying high as the wind carried the faint rhythm of drums. The pack’s Seer, cloaked in silver robes, chanted softly, calling on the goddess to reveal her will. The sound should have filled me with reverence, but all I felt was the tightening of an invisible chain around my throat. All around, wolves lowered their heads in submission, waiting for the Alpha to speak. The moment felt sacred, yet suffocating. And then he stepped forward. Alpha Damian. My breath caught at the sight of him. He stood at the front of the clearing, tall and commanding, dressed in a black shirt that clung to his broad shoulders. His presence was enough to silence the restless crowd, his aura radiating dominance. His eyes — cold, dark, and unyielding — swept over his people. When his gaze brushed mine, something inside me snapped. Heat exploded in my chest, racing through my veins until my knees nearly buckled. My wolf let out a fierce, hungry howl in my mind. No. No, no, no. Not him. The goddess couldn’t possibly be this cruel. I tore my gaze away, my hands trembling as I pressed them together. But denial was useless. The bond had already recognized him. The word thundered through my head like a heartbeat, a truth I could not silence. Mate. My Alpha. Damian’s expression didn’t change, but I saw the flicker in his eyes. The tightening of his jaw. He knew. He felt it too. The clearing seemed to tilt, the noise of the pack fading until it was just him and me, bound by a thread neither of us had chosen. And I hated that it made my pulse race. “Tonight, the moon reveals truth,” Damian’s deep voice rolled across the gathering. “Tonight, bonds will be forged, and destinies sealed. The goddess has chosen.” Every word sank into my chest like a stone. The goddess had chosen him for me. The one man I could never have. Around me, gasps and murmurs filled the air as pairs of wolves recognized their mates. A girl beside me wept with joy as her childhood crush took her hand. Two young warriors shifted, their wolves brushing against each other, tails wagging with instinctive affection. The clearing was alive with happiness, with bonds being celebrated. But none of it touched me. All I felt was the pull of Damian’s presence, like a current dragging me beneath the surface. “Lyra?” Mariah’s voice jolted me, her brows knitting as she took in my pale face. “What’s wrong? Did you—” “Nothing,” I cut in sharply, my voice cracking. But it wasn’t nothing. It was everything. I stumbled back a step, desperate to breathe, desperate to hide the truth clawing at me. The promise of warmth and safety in Damian’s presence warred with the icy dread coiling in my stomach. Because I already belonged to another. Promised since childhood to Elias, the Beta’s son. Our union had been arranged long before this night, a political bond to strengthen our families’ hold within the pack. It was duty. It was survival. And in our world, duty came before love. If anyone discovered the truth — that the goddess had chosen me for the Alpha — everything would unravel. My family’s honor, my cousin’s safety, the fragile balance of our pack. And Damian… Damian would never allow it. I remembered Elias’s smile earlier that day, so certain of the future that had been carved for us. He had taken my hand, promising he would make me happy, that he would be enough. I had smiled back, but even then, a cold hollowness had curled in my chest. Because I had always known the goddess might have other plans. And now she had. Damian’s dark eyes locked with mine across the clearing, and though his face was unreadable, the bond roared louder, demanding recognition. My wolf clawed at me, desperate to run to him, to claim what was ours. I could feel her pushing against me, testing the strength of my control. Go to him, she urged, her voice a sharp growl in my head. He’s ours. Ours. “No,” I whispered to myself, shaking my head violently. My nails bit into my palms as I fought to keep my wolf at bay. But the bond only tightened, a magnetic force that pulled at every fiber of my being. Damian’s jaw flexed, and though he said nothing, I saw the war in his eyes. He was an Alpha, used to control, yet for the first time, he was caught in a battle he couldn’t win — because no wolf could resist the bond forever. And yet, like me, he stood his ground. I tore my gaze away and swallowed hard, forcing steel into my spine. I would bury this bond deep inside me, lock it away where no one could find it. Because if I didn’t, it would destroy us both.
