Chapter Four Elizabeth took her turn helping out in the kitchen. Her jobs were minimal and nothing close to cooking or what might be asked of Katherine. Elizabeth peeled potatoes and set the table, but never had to read a recipe. She watched and marveled at her mother’s skills. The hands that flew across the black and white keys of the piano worked as well whipping up potatoes or batter for pancakes. There wasn’t a recipe she avoided. Elizabeth wondered where her mother learned so much. The other things like laundry or house cleaning happened because everyone had a chore, but Elizabeth hardly noticed those.
