Susanne awoke to the rising sun and the small sounds that announce the day, a soft bustle. The first day of school held excitement and dread. She knew the children would move about and ready themselves, but not wake him.
She slid out of bed and went toward the window and glanced down at the cement path that led to the sidewalk. She knew the boys would be the first to leave. Katherine always dressed quickly as she was always prepared. Her uniform, which included the blue jumper, white shirt, red handkerchief, white socks and plain black shoes that were laced and not attractive, would have been laid out the night before.
