Chapter 1: A Daughter Sacrifice
"Listen to me you brat, you'll do as you're told. It's either you marry Philip Campbell or I will throw you to the streets where you belong," father threatened. Jane's eyes welled up with tears, she couldn't understand what her father just said."No father, I can't do what you want. It's my life and I have the right to do what I want with it." Her father stood up from the couch and pointed at her in rage, the veins in his neck were sticking out. "You have no choice Jane. You will obey my words." "Come on honey, don't waste your time with this imbecile. She will marry Philip. She has no choice," her step mother said. Ever since the death of her mother, Jane's life has been filled with pain. It became worse when her father married Anna, her step mother. She severed the little affection she had from her father. And made her a stranger in her father's house. Tears streamed down her face, she couldn't hold it anymore. "Father, you can't marry me off to a total stranger. I don't love him. And I am engaged to Nathan. Please, don't do this to me," she pleaded. Her step mother scoffed. "What do you know about love?" She continued. "You deserve Philip, you two will make such a wonderful couple." Her lips trembled as she continued to cry. The pain she felt made her helpless. "But father, Philip is crippled. I can't marry him." "Our family business is facing bankruptcy. Philip has agreed to help on the grounds that you marry him. If you don't, our company will crash and we will live the rest of our lives in ridicule," her father snapped. Jane shakes her head in disapproval. "No, I won't allow you to use me for your selfish interest. You can't sell me off like I'm some cheap commodity to be bought in the local market." "If there is anyone who is being selfish here then it's you, Jane. Do it for your family. You are duty bound to marry Philip. As for Nathan, get him off your head. And start getting ready," her father replied. Her step mother moved closer to Jane. "I won't let you drag this family's name to mud. If we lose everything, you will regret it for the rest of your miserable life." Her father stood by watching as she was being insulted by her step mother. He did nothing, she felt terrible. "You have no right to talk to me in that manner," Jane spat. She was about to leave when her step mother pulled her hair tightly. Sending jolts of pain to her scalp. Jane yelped. "Let go of me. You're hurting me." Her step mother held her hair in a tight grip, then whispered into her ear. "You think I will stand by and watch you disregard simple instructions. You had better do as you're told or you'll have yourself to blame." Jane struggled to get free from her hold. At the corner of her eyes, her father ignored her and sat down. Then he poured himself a glass of wine, he then took a sip. "Let me go," she cried out. Then her step mother freed her and pushed her forcefully. Jane fell down on the cold tiles. She whimpered in pain. Her step mother advanced towards her menacingly. "You'll marry Philip Campbell and that is final." She watched as her step mother walked away, climbing the stairs to her room. While her father looked at her, his eyes had no trace of sympathy towards her. She struggled to get up and limped outside to her car, crying in pain. She had almost sprained her ankle in the process. When she got outside, she stood for a few minutes. Memories of the hurtful words spoken to her flooded her mind. She managed to get a hold on herself. Then she got into her car and drove off. She pulled up in front of her best friend's house. She needed someone to talk to. After knocking on the door, her friend came out. "Oh my God!! Jane, you look terrible," her friend's eyes widened in surprise. "Come in." She opened the door wide and Jane limped into the living room. They sat down. " Tamara, I am in pain. My father wants me to marry a stranger." "No way, why would he do that?" She wiped her tears away and sniffed. "To save the family business. He is trading me off." Tamara pulled Jane into a tight hug. "Don't be sad and stop crying." Jane pulled away. And Tamara looked at Jane. "And your leg, are you alright?" "I will be fine. I need to go see Nathan. Maybe he will find a way out," Jane said. Tamara rolled her eyes. She had never liked Nathan, such a jerk but her friend wouldn't listen to her. "And what could he possibly do?" "We can elope and get married. That way, my father won't have any control over me," Jane stood up. "I need to leave now. I will give you a call." Tamara followed Jane outside , and Jane got into her car. "Don't you think you should see a doctor? You're limping." Tamara's voice was laced with concern. Jane started her car and smiled at Tamara. "I will be fine. I didn't sprain my ankle. It's just a little pain." "You're limping Jane. I think you should see a doctor rather than running off to go see Nathan," Tamara argued. Jane sighed. "Fine, that will be after seeing Nathan." "That's good," Tamara smiled. She waved at Tamara, then drove off . When Jane got to her boyfriend's house, she came out of her car. As she stepped into the house, she saw that the television was on. Her eyes darted around. Two wine glasses were on the table, almost empty. Is there a guest in his house? Nathan was nowhere in sight, suddenly, her ears twitched. When she heard a muffled sound coming from one of the rooms. She dragged herself upstairs as she struggled to limp forward. "Oh baby," someone moaned. The door was slightly opened and Jane pushed the door as she got in. "No,this is not happening !!!," Jane staggered backwards and screamed. What she saw made her clutched her chest in shock.
