Ch.11 ~ Bothered by cinnamon-rose scent

1947 Words
Konrad's POV It has been three days since Isal left with Richart. Mom has locked herself in her bedroom, wailing as if her daughter passed on. Well, dad has not uttered a word about what has happened. It made me content because it was going to be useless to justify my actions to him. Hell, I would do it again, even if it was the last thing to do to protect my little sister. ‘Kill your own mother?’ Dutch chimed in, cutting my thoughts off. ‘Isal is my only sibling, and I promised to always protect her since we were small.’ I replied with a sigh. ‘You miss her, don’t you?’ Dutch asked, changing the subject. ‘Konrad, come to my office. It’s urgent.’ Dad’s annoyed voice disturbed me from answering my wolf. I huffed, hitting the steering wheel; we just arrived ten minutes ago from the Greymist pack. ‘You said you were ready to be an Alpha. Why the anger?’ Dutch snorted. Rushing to his office, I found Arvin and Fetu, already sitting comfortably in the chairs. “What’s going on?.” I casually asked, feeling the tension oozing from dad. I looked around. “Where are Robert and Percy?” We usually have gammas, both current and future, in a sitting like this. “Two days ago, the Storm Moon pack got attacked. Resulting in Alpha Kai’s daughter being badly injured. I need you and Fetu to fly over to his pack. The prisoner seems to have lost his voice and I need you, Fetu, to make him talk.” Dad replied, ignoring my question. I narrowed my eyes at him with suspicion. “Why did he ask you for help and not one of his own?” It makes little sense because he has six alphas in his province. “With Fetu’s ability, it’s best I lend him a hand. And please… behave while you are there. This will determine if your arrogant àss is ready for this or not.” He stated, glaring at me. I sighed, staring at Fetu and his father whispering to each other. “Might as well find mates. You are both too old to be mate-less.” Arvin chuckled as he pats Fetu on his broad shoulder. “I thought we were going on business.” I retorted. Dad rumbled, telling us to prepare for our journey. “Do it as quiet as possible.” He concluded. -*- It was early in the morning when we arrived at Cherilith’s vast airport. We found a medium height, blond man waiting for us next to his car. As soon as he sees us, he stepped towards us with his lips pressed together in a thin line. “Hi, I am Luca Greer, the beta of the Storm Moon pack.” He comfortably stretched his hand to me. “Thank you for collecting us… I am Konrad Roth, and this is my future beta, Fetu Ala.” I shook his hand. He nodded and told us to follow him. “That wasn’t bad at all.” Fetu whispered in my ear as he passed by me, following Luca to the boot of his car inserting our bags. I chuckled, staring at his bald, shiny head gleaming under the sun veiled by the white clouds. Raising my head, I breathed in the earthy smell, noticed the rain clouds brewing in the far distance. ‘It looks like a harsh rain will fall later tonight.’ Dutch chirped in annoyance. ‘I couldn’t agree with you more.’ I snorted a laugh because I know he was not fond of lightning. ‘At least I am not the only one.’ He barked Fetu’s name. We got into the car and drove off. The ride took longer than I expected. I gazed outside the window, feeling bored. We passed the trees and colourful flowers spreading through the open field. You can only spot a few houses peeking into the forest as we drive up the mountainous road. “I am curious... Why did Alpha Roth send you two, not his direct subordinates?” Luca broke the silence as he turned onto a curved road. “Fetu has a skill no one has in my pack, and I am just tagging along for future purposes.” I replied, seeing huge white houses lined through the street, heading to the bottom of the hill. The scenery was appealing to the eyes. They fenced the houses with trees in every backyard; with colourful flowers on every veranda of every house we passed by. He nodded, glancing at the rear-view mirror, squinting his eyes at Fetu. “Did the prisoner talk yet?” I asked as we arrive in the driveway of a double story house. A sturdy man and a petite woman were waiting at the bottom of the stairs, holding hands. Luca pinched his nose bridge and did not respond when he parked the car. He got out, and we followed suit. The pebbles crunched under my shoes as I step on the ground. We walked to the couple, whom I believe are the alpha and Luna of the pack, given to the aura sipping from them. The alpha had a sober expression, with his big shoulder muscles tightening in anticipation. His short hair and dark almond eyes reminded me of the girl in the picture I saw during the teleconference. ‘At least we know for sure it’s her.’ Dutch piped in with admiration. ‘Focus, we are here on business.’ I scolded, ignoring his dreamy silver eyes. “Thank you for coming. I am Alpha Kai, and this is my Luna Annuziata.” He spoke as he greeted both Fetu and me in a hand gesture. His Luna has a gentle, welcoming smile, and her aura was soothing. ‘Unlike your distant mother.’ Dutch scoffed, and I ignored him. “Let’s get inside so we can talk without too many ears listening.” Annuziata said as she nodded for us to follow them. We walked through the limestone porch before entering the big room on our right. Suddenly, a faint smell of cinnamon and cream overwhelmed my senses. Making me lightheaded and forcing a whimper from my wolf. I almost lost my step but recovered quickly. Too bad my friend saw me. “Are you okay?” He asked quietly, and I nodded. We sat on the red leather sofas with a small square wooden table matching the massive wooden wall divider. Lined with many books. There were pictures of a little girl with massive afro hair. I looked at the Luna. The child has a light brown skin same as Alpha Kai, but hers is like a coffee with too much milk. “That’s Wilona and her best friend Zara. She was five.” She saw how curious I was watching the enormous picture hanging on the wall. They were cheerfully hugging in a pose. I nodded, not trusting my tongue. Dutch laughed, rolling in my head. ‘You really are behaving.’ He said. “How is she?” Fetu asked. “She is still recovering.” Alpha Kai replied with a sigh. “Which is why you are here.” He had a faraway look in his eyes, as if he was hiding something. “Where is the prisoner?” I asked, getting comfortable on the sofa. “Before you start with your discussion, it’s best if we come through to the dining room to have breakfast. I don’t want Luna Verona and Arihi thinking that I starved you while you were visiting our pack.” Annuziata interrupted with a grin. “You don’t want to say you are fine to my mate, especially when she arranged everything in person.” Alpha Kai said, leading us to the room opposite the one we were sitting in. In the middle of a grey carpet stood an eight-seater table where we settled on the chairs. A smell of fresh flowers decorating the corner of the room greeted me, but there was a faint intoxicating smell that bothered my wolf. He was pacing non-stop. I scanned the suite and saw cinnamon sticks peeking from the flowerpots. ‘Why am I having this headache to a mere cinnamon?’ Dutch rumbled. “You have a lovely home, Luna Annuziata.” Fetu’s voice brought me out of my thoughts. “Thank you.” She said with a smile. A tall young female with olive skin walked into the room with a thin guy. They placed all kinds of breakfast food in front of us. But Fetu’s demeanour changed, and I ignored him since my stomach let out a quiet growl. I grabbed the plate and stuffed it with food. The meal was so fresh and delightful. Our munching food and cutlery poking the plates were the only sounds echoing the room. “Are you excited about your ceremony?” Annuziata asked, breaking the verbal silence. “Yes, I am.” My lips jerked to the side as I swallow my food. Thankfully, she did not pry on the matter. ‘Maybe you should have shown a bit of enthusiasm.’ ‘When did you become a psychological analyst?’ I growled at Dutch, making him quiet. After a delicious breakfast, we went outside with alpha Kai, leaving Luca behind. “It’s a 40 minutes walk. Unless you want to cut it short with a run.” He suggested while taking off his t-shirt. Our wolves sprinted through the grass, following the footpath leading uphill. I gazed up, observing how the tall trees swayed with the cool breeze. I was worried about the weather, but Alpha Kai assured us it only rains mostly in the evening. Unless the clouds bless us. I arrived at the old building that had rusted iron windows and gates. We shifted and dressed. The stench of blood was the first smell that welcomed us when we walked through the dim-lit passages. Thanking my wolf for his heightened senses, I could see we were going deeper into the cells. “Was this the first attack with you ruling?” Fetu asked with a bothered tone. ‘What’s bothering you that much?’ I mind-linked him. ‘It’s... nothing.’ He said with a sigh. “It has been a while.” A tall guy spoke, leaning against the wall with a small stick between his teeth. “This is my gamma, Amedeo Demarco.” Alpha Kai introduced; his squint fixed on Amedeo. He pricked his brow and stretched his hand with a cocky grin. “Nice to meet you. “ I shook his hand. His rolled-up sleeves showed off his colourful tattoo on his light tan skin. After the introductions, we went into the compact space where a middle-aged man was hanging on the wall. Tied with iron chains. His head was sagging, and his breathing was shallow. “We will be outside if you need anything.” Alpha Kai told us as he drags a wide-eyed Amedeo out of the room. I hissed, following Fetu to examine the chains before speaking. “The spellbinding these chains... is impressive.” “How can you tell?” I asked in confusion. He explained his findings. “So the filthy Ethaweth witches allied with alpha Kai?” I clenched my jaws. “It’s none of our business. Let’s do what we came here for and go back home.” He replied, ignoring my disgust. It took him forty-five long minutes to get all the information Alpha Kai needed. Even though the prisoner gagged blue-ish blood after confessing their mission and perished before telling us who was behind the force.
