chapter 5
Plan to Escape
With her body shaking from the shock of what she just saw, Stephanie enters Leon's residence. Her chest hurts and every breath feels shallow, as if her lungs are fighting to keep up with the discomfort. It was a deeper betrayal than she could have ever guessed. Nothing could hurt her this much, she thought. Not from Leon.
Her hands automatically go to her stomach to shield the life that is developing there. Our kid. Thinking about what this means for the future she believed they would have together makes her feel ill.
"I can't stay here," she says to herself in a voice that is almost heard above the surrounding quiet. But, the words are genuine, and uttering them out loud feels liberating. An agonizing, frightful step.
As she makes her way through the opulent entry hall and into the living room, she pushes herself to walk forward, her heels resonating off the glossy marble floor. The sound of laughter fills the room….laughing from Leon's parents, as if nothing were wrong. As like her entire world hadn't suddenly fallen apart.
She is initially noticed by Leon's mother, who is always composed and aloof. Her piercing gaze narrows as she takes in Stephanie's pallid face and shaking hands. Her voice is brimming with contempt as she sneers. "Pauper, you look horrible. Are you here to assist us? Get a cup of tea.
Stephanie bites her tongue even though the words hurt. Every insult this woman gives her exacerbates the rage and humiliation she already feels, making her blood boil. But, the moment to fight is not now. Not right now. She must see past their small-time brutality and consider something more significant.
She ignores them and goes up the stairs to her room without saying anything. She must leave this place. In this house, she has no future. No more.
Stephanie closes the door to her bedroom after entering. She takes a few trembling breaths and slides to the floor, leaning her back against the door because her knees feel weak. Tears threaten to spill from her eyes, but she's sick of crying. She has already wept too much over Leon.
Rather, she gets to her feet, wipes her face, and heads to the closet. After removing a suitcase, she opens it and begins packing. Only the necessities. A few personal belongings, some paperwork, and some clothes. It's not about what she carries with her at the moment, but she can't handle much. The goal is to escape. Leaving this nightmare behind.
From the other side of the room, her phone buzzes. She freezes a moment. As the screen comes to life, Leon's name appears. Don't respond to it. But, her curiosity overcomes her, and she approaches to retrieve it.
Where are you? Is a straightforward message that makes her pulse race. We must speak.
Her hands are shaking as she looks at the screen. Speak? Following his recent actions? Recalling the image of Leon and Adriana, their hands all over each other, makes her stomach knot in revulsion. She experiences the agony again, but this time it is accompanied by rage. He is not worthy of an explanation. She is not worthy of giving him anything.
After tossing the phone onto the bed, she resumes packing. There's no need to answer. She has already decided on something. She's going out.
A knock on the door interrupts her as she zips up her luggage. A knock, forceful and demanding. Her throat catches her heart. Leon.
"Stephanie, let me in!" She can tell by the stern, persistent tone of his voice that he won't go without answers.
For an instant, she remains motionless. What ought I to do? Should I open the door? Go up against him? Or flee? She feels as though she has no option, but she is certain that she cannot remain here.
"Stephanie!" She realizes she is running out of time when Leon's voice erupts once more.
She glances at the door and then at her suitcase. As she considers her alternatives, every second seems to drag on forever. Will she be strong enough to face him if she opens the door? Or is he going to manage to trap her here?
Before she can decide, Leon storms in and the door slams open, crashing into the wall. His rage is evident as his presence permeates the space. He appears to have gone through hell since their earlier altercation, as evidenced by his crumpled clothes and unkempt hair, but she is aware of this. Regardless of the intensity he had with Adriana, he is most likely still in shock.
His expression contorts into a frown as soon as his gaze lands on the suitcase. He approaches her and yells, "What the hell is this?" in an angry tone. "Where do you anticipate going?"
Despite her racing heartbeat, Stephanie maintains her composure and keeps her terror hidden from him. Her voice is icy and determined as she raises her chin. "I'm going."
Leon's expression grows gloomy. His eyes are filled with a range of emotions that she is unable to read as he takes a step closer. He snarls and reaches for her wrist, saying, "You're not going anywhere." Her flesh crawls from the heat of his touch and his hard grip. "We're not finished."
With all of the hurt and rage that has been rising inside of her, she yanks her hand free and looks up at him. "Yes, Leon, we are. I noticed you. Adriana and you. She can see the fleeting flicker of shame in his eyes as the words linger in the air like poison. Excellent. He ought to feel bad. That shouldn't be all he feels.
She continues, her voice steady despite her racing heart, "I'm not staying here to be your backup plan while you run back to her whenever you feel like it."
Leon's look becomes unreadable as his face hardens. She has finished reading him, though. She has finished everything.
A Last-Ditch Escape
She repeats, "I'm leaving," this time with greater assurance. Her voice is more powerful and unflinching. "I can't be stopped."
She can briefly see Leon's mind racing as his jaw tightens, as though he's deciding what to say or do next. She quickly moves by him and takes the suitcase off the bed before he can move. Adrenaline motivates her as she runs toward the door, her heart thumping in her chest.
"Stephanie!" She continues even after Leon yells after her. Her legs take her quicker than she imagined as she rockets down the stairs. Every step is liberating. She is getting closer to leaving him, this life, and the lies with each step.
The crisp night air smacks her face as she rushes out the front door. As she gets to her car, she breathes in fast, short gasps. She gets into the driver's seat and tosses the suitcase into the backseat with trembling hands.
She hears Leon's icy, authoritative voice behind her as she is about to start the engine. "You shouldn't expect to return if you leave now."
Her heart clenches for a second as her fingers tighten around the driving wheel. She was in love with this man. This is her child's father. But, love doesn't appear to constitute treachery. She also refuses to get ensnared by someone who is solely interested in himself.
She flips the key without thinking twice and leaves the mansion and Leon behind as she pulls out of the driveway. Despite the seemingly interminable, gloomy, and unclear road ahead, she is determined that she must vanish. for herself. For her kid.
One issue, though, still stands as she heads into the night: Where will she go? And will Leon be that forgiving of her?
