Just In Time

I washed all the clothes I got for the babies in Dreft then I put them in the dresser. The clothes that are bigger sizes then zero to three months I have hung up in my portable closet. I got everything you can imagine for the babies at the baby shower. I am so incredibly blessed. I still don’t understand what was going on between Adams family and Abbi’s family. That was just strange. My mom helped me organize most of the stuff I got. She even helped me put the bassinets, baby swings, and bouncy seats together. I never would have been able to figure that part out.

I have been working in the store during the day the past couple weeks after my mom left. I feel so grateful for everything I have. However Aunt Jenna insisted I take the weekend off. My feet have been getting crazy swollen. So far my blood pressure is still normal though. We told them about the swelling and the doctor assured us everything is fine for now. She gave me a list of symptoms to look for when it comes to high blood pressure.

“Marie what do you wanna watch tonight?” Abbi said sitting on the couch in the down stairs living room. It’s a Saturday night and we deem those as family movie night now. Aunt Jenna is making caramel popcorn in the kitchen. It’s simply amazing. She makes her own caramel and just pours it on top of the popcorn. So good!

“Mmm I’m not sure Abbi. Pick something funny. I can not handle any more romance.” I say blushing. These pregnancy hormones got my body all kinds of messed up. I kept snapping at Abbi a few weeks ago, and she would blush whenever it happened. It was weird. She figured out s****l frustration is my biggest problem right now. Which is odd because I have only ever been with Adam that one time. So Abbi gifted me a vibrating rabbit. It’s waterproof and charges so there’s no need to buy batteries. And let me just say that it’s has me seeing stars in a matter of minutes. I miss having a boyfriend though. The vibratory doesn’t keep my bed warm at night.

“Oh I know! Let’s watch Grownups two! It’s hilarious! Have you ever seen it?”

“I haven’t.”

“Nice pick Abbi! I got popcorn and drinks! Let’s get our laughter on!” Aunt Jenna says as she strolls in with a big bowl of the caramel popcorn and a bag with can drinks.

I take a few pieces and pop them in my mouth. And grab a can of soda. Abbi does the same after she puts the movie on. Abbi still spends most of her time here. She only goes home once or twice a week. She even started buying groceries. We told her she didn’t have to, but she said she was doing her part since she stays here.

After the movie Abbi and me went up to my room. She has been staying with me in my room more often. Said she wants to be close by if I go into labor in the middle of the night. My hospital bag is ready and I have the diaper bag ready. I got the backpack kind of diaper bag. I feel it has more room and I simply love it. I got it in teal and brown zig zag stripes with a teal baby elephant on the front.

“How many more weeks do you have until your due date?”

“Impatient?” I ask while laughing.

“Yes! I’m ready to see their cute faces!”

“My due date is a little less then four weeks away. And how do you think I feel? I’m carrying these babies! If it wasn’t for that belly brace I wouldn’t be able to move.” I say while plopping in my rocking chair.

Abbi sits on the floor next to me. She puts her hands on my belly and starts talking to the babies.

“Can y’all hurry up and finish baking? Aunty Abbi is ready to meet y’all’s cute selves!” The babies start moving around and one kicks her right by her cheek that is resting on me.

“Now you got them going. I will never sleep tonight.” I say laughing as I watch my belly move around.

“Have you heard from Adam anymore?”

“Nope.” I say popping the “p” sound.

“He doesn’t know what he is missing.”

“No but that’s okay. I have my babies and a job and more or less my own place. We are going to be just fine.”

“But what about romance? I know your lonely and that toy I got you only helps so much.”

“It is what it is Abbi. I can’t date looking like I do.”

“But they are going to need a father figure eventually. But that’s okay. After they are born we will find you a man that treats you like a queen and loves these babies as his own.”

“Abbi I am in no rush to get broken again. Adam really messed me up. We weren’t even really together for him. I am not ready to put myself out there again.”

“Ugh fine. But you will be eventually. Oh did I tell you my older brother Talon is coming home soon. He went to Ohio to deal with some of our distant relatives with their land. Apparently coyotes have been attacking their livestock. I haven’t seen him in almost a year.”

“You haven’t told me. That must be exciting! Did he get their land sorted out?”

“Yup.”

“Well that’s good. How many siblings do you have?”

We don’t talk much about her family. I don’t think they are all that close.

“I have two older brothers. They are the worst but I miss them when they are away. Talon is the youngest at twenty and we have an older brother named Marcus. He is twenty-three.”

“That must suck when you get a boyfriend.”

“I never really had one. I’m waiting for the one. Ya know? The one where when I see him I just know he is meant for me.” She says while looking off and day dreaming.

“I thought I had that with Adam.”

“No you will know when you meet the one. He will literally make you lose your breath, and make you feel like the world revolves around him.” She says confidently.

We climb into my bed to get some rest. It is late and a full moon.

“Do you really think anyone will want a single teenage mom of two?” I ask absentmindedly.

“Hun you won’t be able to keep him away once he sees you. He will adore your babies because they are yours. Just wait and see.” And with that we both drift off to sleep.

Only I don’t get to sleep all night. I wake up with some serious pain in my back and on my sides. Thinking it is just the babies and that I slept wrong I get up and start walking around my room. The pain goes away after a second so I sit in my rocking chair.

“Everything okay Marie?” Abbi asks while sitting up.

“Yeah just a bit of pain in my back and on my sides.”

I get up to climb back in bed when suddenly, a sharp pain takes over my entire stomach and my back. I suck in a sharp breath and moan through it as Abbi get up. As soon as she reaches me I feel a pop and a puddle at my feet.

“Oh my God!! It’s baby time!! Let’s get you down stairs and I will come back up for your bag. I will also get Aunt Jenna. Lets go.”

Abbi helps me down the stairs to the living room. Then she heads back upstairs to get my aunt up and grab my bag. Aunt Jenna reaches me first.

“How far apart are the contractions?”

“I am not sure. I woke up with a sharp pain so I sat in the rocking chair. I was going to climb back in bed when the second one hit and my water broke.” I say after another contraction passes through me. These things hurt!

“Alright I am here! I got the diaper bag. I also got the keys to the van since the car seats are already in it.” Abbi says while taking in a deep breath.

I have Aunt Jenna call my mom while I call Lexi.

“Hey Marie is everything okay?”

“Yeah I am on my way to the hospital. My water just broke.”

“Oh goodness! Okay I will head that way. If he wants to come would you care if Adam came with me? Does he know your in labor?”

“I will leave that up to y’all. I haven’t told him since I knew you wanted to be here I wanted to call you first.”

A contraction hits me and I try to breathe through it.

“Okay dear I will see you as soon as I can get there. Just breathe through it. Have your aunt keep us updated okay?”

“Yup. See you soon. I’ll call Adam real quick. I think I should be the one to tell him.”

“Your right dear. Go on and call him. Tell him to meet me at the front door in ten minutes or I will leave without him.

I hang up with her and pull up Adams number. Just as I hit call another pain shoots through me.

“Hello?” Adam says with sleep thick in his deep voice.

“Hey Adam I am heading to the hospital. My water broke. Your mom said she is leaving in ten minutes if you want to be here. It’s up to you. I just thought I should be the one to tell you that the babies are coming.”

“But they are early. My mom was supposed to come over in a few days to stay until they came. She said she made plans with your mom. Can they even come yet?”

“Relax Adam. The doctor told me they would probably come in June.”

“Okay well I guess I will see you soon. That is if you don’t mind me coming.”

“I don’t care. But no Yazmin. I mean it Adam.”

“I will make an excuse. She is here sleeping.”

“Maybe you should just stay home then?” I say bitterly. A contraction hits me making me feel like someone is slicing me from the inside out. I scream through it because this one hurt worse then all of them.

“Marie! Marie! What’s going on?”

“Oh Adam it hurts. It hurts so much.” I cry as tears run down my face.

“Marie hang on hun. We will be there in just a minute.” Abbi says from the front seat.

I hear Yazmin in the background yelling at Adam.

“You are not going to leave me here while you go play father of the year!”

“Yazmin I don’t have time for this! Stay here or go home but I have to go to Tennessee! She needs me right now! You may not like it but those are my kids! I know you wanted me to sign my rights away! I love you! But I want to be in their lives! I want to be there for the birth! So get the f**k out!” Adam screams at her.

“Adam I will see you soon.” I hang up the phone. I can’t take the drama with Yazmin. I know I don’t have to worry about her showing up though since Adam will be coming with Lexi.

“Is he coming?” Aunt Jenna asks.

“Yeah he is coming with his mom. It sounds like Yazmin is the one who wanted him to sign his rights away. I won’t forgive him for the library incident. But he should at least get to see them be born.”

“Your a better woman then me then.” Abbi says while I hold her hand.

It’s not that I’m a better woman. I’m doing this for my kids. If their father can grow a pair and do what he needs to do for his kids then I won’t complain. I just hope that no one gets hurt in the process.
