The next morning I make quick work of packing the things I plan to take with me. In total I have two suit cases and a carry on bag that had my clothes and electronics and all the chargers while my toiletry bag had all my bathroom supplies and my make up. After I take them to my dads Land Rover I go find him in the kitchen.
“You all packed up?” He asks me while taking a drink of his coffee.
“Yup everything is in the trunk. Would you mind running me to the school so I can get a copy of my records and turn my texts books in?” I ask from the door way. I am just hoping I can get in and out of school without running into anyone.
“Yup sure. You ready to go?” He asks as he stands up and stretches his arms up. My dad has aged nicely I guess. He is in his early forty’s. He has a solid build from spending hours at the gym on the weekends he isn’t working. He has a few strands of grey hair around his ears but that’s it.
I nod as I follow him out of the kitchen. He tells mom that we are going to the school and to be ready when we get back so we can head out. After I climb into the passenger seat he starts the car and we head toward my school. I have my text books in my lap to turn into my teachers.
“I’ll get your records while you take your text books to your classes alright?”
“I thought I could just leave them at the office?”
“I think you should take them to your teachers and let them know you won’t be in class anymore.” He says while glancing at me. Man I really hoped to avoid seeing anyone.
“Alright.”
After we get to my school I head to all my classes and hand the books over to my teachers without any issues. Thank God that’s over! I meet dad back in the front office and we head back to our car.
We pull up in front of our house as I climb in the back seat mom come out of the house locking the door. Once she gets in we head off toward Tennessee. About an hour into our trip my phone starts blowing up by Adam calling me and texting me. I tried ignoring it but I answer after the hundredth call.
“What do you want Adam?”
“How are you going to just move away with my kid?! I know I’m going to have to pay child support shouldn’t I at least get to see my child too?! Or are you finally going to get rid of it?” Adam shouts through the phone.
“I’m moving away because it’s better for me and my child to be as far away from you and your psychotic girlfriend. And no you won’t be getting visitation. And as for child support I don’t want it. We will be just fine on our own without you. The second you told me to get an abortion you gave up your rights to be a dad. But the second you had your girlfriend threaten the life of my baby you gave up being a father all together. I never want to hear from you again. You are dead to us. And that’s what I will tell my baby if it asks about you.” I tell at him while glancing at my parents. They keep looking at each other and glancing back at me.
“Whatever. Your nothing but a b**ch anyway.” And with that the line disconnected.
“Honey what do you mean you don’t want his child support? Babies are expensive and any little bit would help.” My mom says looking concerned. Dad has his jaw clenched so tight I wouldn’t be surprised if he complains his teeth are bothering him later.
“No mom I thought about it and I don’t want nothing from him. Once I get settled at Aunt Jennas I will find a job. I will be done with school before the baby is born and I can get a full time job. I will do this without him.” I tell my parents hoping they would understand I don’t want the headache dealing with Adam. I just wanna forget about him.
“Alright honey. If that’s what you want. But if you change your mind let me know and we will get it sorted out.” Dad says from the driver seat.
The rest of the trip is uneventful. We go through a drive through for lunch around one and we make it to my aunts house later that evening. My aunt lives in a nice house that resembles a cabin but I feel it is too big to be a cabin. My Uncle Isaiah was in the military and he passed away after being hit by a drunk truck driver. My aunt bought this place after selling the house she lived in with my uncle. Between the military support and the settlement she got from the truck accident and her little book store she owns my aunt has plenty of money. But she isn’t the type to flaunt it. She is wholesome and down to earth and She is just great!
She meets us on her wrap around porch with a big smile on her face.
“Well hello fam nice to see y’all!” She screeches and she runs down the porch to pull me into a tight hug. My aunt is more like a sister to me. She is in her early thirties and doesn’t look a day over twenty. Her long brown hair has red and blonde streaks in it and reaches her middle back with it up in the pony tail she has it in. She has on a red flannel shirt and some dark skinny jeans and cowboy boots.
“Hey Aunt Jenna thanks for letting me stay here. We really appreciate it.” I tell her as I hug her.
“Oh nonsense! Your always welcome here! I hear there is gonna be another member of the family soon. Wanna tell me how that came about happening?”
My face turns red and luckily I’m saved by my mom speaking up. “Now Jenna you know damn good and well how that happened! Pretty sure you covered your ears when mom tried talking to us about the birds and the bees when we were kids.” My mom tells Her with a soft warm smile on her face as if she is recalling the memory. Aunt Jenna is my moms kid sister.
“I was asking about the boy who did this and where he is gonna be through all this. You didn’t give me any information just that she is pregnant and asked if she could stay with me.” Aunt Jenna rolls her eyes.
Mom and dad then explain everything that happened. Even about it being a bet. If looks could kill and Adam was anywhere nearby he would be six feet under.
“Well don’t you worry about him honey. You will find someone special when the time is right. And I have a feeling a pretty girl like you won’t be single long.”
“Oh no Aunt Jenna. I am done with boys for a while. I want to finish school and focus on my baby and getting a job after I graduate.” I tell Aunt Jenna sternly.
“Well I got just the thing for you then. Let’s go on in and we can talk about it.” Aunt Jenna says as she grabs my carry on and toiletry bag while dad gets my suitcases and follows her. Mom puts her arm around me and walks with me to follow them in the house. The place is as beautiful on the outside as it is on the inside. Sleek shiny hard wood floors and cream colored walls an open floor plan with a stone fireplace in the living room and the kitchen had nice marble counter tops with cherry wood cabinets and black appliances. The dining room had a large six place setting cherry dining table and China cabinet with the China her and my uncle picked out. They were white with hand painted blue swirls on them. Then there is the laundry room by the back door and next to it is the bathroom. Upstairs she has four bedrooms plus a master bedroom that she shared with my uncle. I follow them into the first room and sit down on the twin size bed while I watch my aunt and parents put my stuff where they want it. My mom takes my toiletry bag to the bathroom next to my room.
“Now this room is temporary let me show you where you will be next week.” My aunt says as she pulls my hand through the room to the door that leads to the attic.
Once we get upstairs I realize there is carpet on the floor and that the attic is cleared of all the stuff she had up here.
“Aunt Jenna where’s all your stuff at?”
“Well I moved it into the shed outback. I wanted to get this room ready for you because with a baby you will need more room. So I thought we could make this a little apartment for you. I have someone coming tomorrow to run the plumbing up here and there will be a bathroom for you and your own kitchen area if you want.”
I look around the room with my eyes wide open. There’s an area closed off that I assume will be my bathroom and I can’t help but feel so much about her going out of her way for me. “Aunt Jenna are you sure about this? I don’t have a job yet to pay you back.” I hate for her to have to spend this much money on me.
“There’s nothing to pay back. I had the carpet already in because I was planning to do all this anyway. And let’s go downstairs and talk at the table a bit shall we?” She says as she starts down the stairs with me following behind her.
After we all sit in the living room she asks me what kind of job I was looking for and when I tell her I don’t have any idea yet my aunt smiles at me warmly.
“I could really use an assistant at the store. Mostly just logging our transactions and opening the store on weekends and closing during weekdays. It will come with benefits and I will pay you nicely.”
“Are you serious Aunt Jenna! I’ll take it! When do I start?!” I yell getting really excited. Finally things are starting to look up!
“Let’s get you settled and enrolled at school and set up with a doctor and we will go from there okay?” My aunt hugs me to her as I take a deep breath in. Things are finally turning around.
My parents stay the weekend and help my aunt get the attic ready and buy furniture to be delivered next week. My mom even bought a crib and changing station for the baby. She got it in a light oak wood. I love it so much. It will also be delivered next week. By the time my parents leave there is fresh cream paint on the walls to match the brown carpets and it’s sectioned off for the bathroom which is a decent size and have plenty of room for a living room and play area. I decided I didn’t need a kitchen as I would be with Aunt Jenna and could cook for both of us downstairs but they still got me a fridge and a counter with a sink and another counter to put a microwave on for those middle of the night feedings. This way I wouldn’t have to go downstairs in the middle of the night.
The day my parents left I felt so many things. I was sad they were leaving but happy that I wouldn’t have to go back. Dad is going to see about moving offices still but seeing me all set up and having a job lined up helped ease the worry they had. So while I know they want to come back to Tennessee it may be a while. Mom gave me the number of the obgyn to make an appointment with next week and told me to let her know how it goes. I am so ready to live my life for me and my baby. As my parents pull off I can’t help the tears that run down my face. But I know this isn’t forever. It’s just for right now.
