The engine roared back to life, tires spitting gravel as Daniel gunned the car forward. Rose clutched the door handle, her pulse a wild drumbeat. Through the side mirror, she caught the glint of headlights weaving between the trees. Too steady, too deliberate. “They found us,” she whispered. Daniel’s eyes never left the road. “They were always going to.” The sedan hurtled down the narrow track, trees whipping past like sentinels. The night pressed heavy, shadows broken only by the stark beams of headlights. Every bend felt sharper, every bump more violent. “Hold on,” Daniel muttered.
