The scent wouldn't leave.
Jace hated it.
He sat in the back corner of his Chemistry class, one arm draped over his chair while the teacher rambled on about molecules and chemical reactions
Normally, he would've been asleep by now.
Instead, every muscle in his body was tense.
The smell lingered in the air.
Rotten.
Vampire.
His jaw clenched.
The scent drifted through the room again, stronger this time.
His wolf snarled inside him.
Kill it.
Jace looked out the window.
Anything was better than staring at the clock while a vampire walked freely through his school.
His school.
A place under wolf protection.
A place where vampires didn't belong.
Not after what they had done.
His fingers tightened around his pen until it snapped in half.
The crack echoed through the classroom.
Several students turned.
"Mr. Ryder?" the teacher asked.
Jace slowly looked up.
"What?"
A few students winced.
The teacher cleared her throat.
"Is there a problem?"
"Yeah."
The teacher blinked.
Jace tossed the broken pen onto his desk.
"I'm bored."
A few girls giggled.
The teacher sighed.
"Of course you are."
The bell rang before she could say anything else.
Students immediately rushed toward the door.
Jace stood.
The scent hit him again.
Closer.
Much closer.
His silver eyes darkened.
Somewhere in this hallway was a vampire.
He could feel it now.
The creature was hiding among hundreds of innocent students.
Walking beside them.
Talking to them.
Breathing the same air.
A low growl almost escaped his throat.
"Easy."
Mason appeared beside him.
Jace ignored him.
"Jace."
Still nothing.
"You're doing the thing again."
"What thing?"
"The murder face."
Jace finally glanced at him.
Mason immediately regretted speaking.
His friend's eyes looked dangerous.
Predatory.
Like he was seconds away from ripping someone's throat out.
"The scent is everywhere," Jace muttered.
Mason's expression changed instantly.
"A vampire?"
Jace nodded.
His wolf paced violently beneath his skin.
Hungry.
Angry.
Ready.
"Have you seen it?" Mason asked.
"No."
"Then relax."
Jace laughed.
A cold, humorless sound.
"Relax?"
The hallway suddenly felt too crowded.
Too loud.
Too slow.
The scent wrapped around him again.
Mocking him.
Tempting him.
His heart pounded faster.
"I'll find it."
Mason grabbed his arm.
"Don't do anything stupid."
Jace looked at him.
Then smiled.
The smile made Mason nervous.
Very nervous.
"Since when have I ever done anything stupid?"
Mason stared at him.
"Do you want the list alphabetically or chronologically?"
For the first time all day, a genuine smirk appeared on Jace's face.
Then it vanished.
The scent returned.
Closer than before.
His wolf immediately stood alert.
The vampire was nearby.
Very nearby.
And whoever it was...
they had just become his next target.
