HIDDEN HEARTS EPISODE 10: THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US The next day, the distance between Elena and Jayden was impossible to ignore. They weren't arguing. They weren't angry. But something had changed. Something neither of them knew how to fix. Elena sat quietly in class, staring at the same page of her notebook for nearly five minutes without reading a single word. Her thoughts kept drifting back to yesterday. The hallway. The conversation. The way Jayden had walked away. She sighed softly. Maybe she should have explained herself. Maybe she should have said more. But it was too late now. Or at least, it felt that way. Across the room, Jayden wasn't doing much better. He looked focused on the lesson, but Derek knew better. "You've been staring at that same sentence for ten minutes," Derek whispered. Jayden blinked. "What?" "Exactly." Jayden rolled his eyes. Derek smirked. "Just talk to her." "It's not that simple." "Why not?" Jayden didn't answer. Because he didn't know. And that bothered him. A lot. --- Lunch arrived. Elena sat under the tree near the courtyard, the same place she always chose when she wanted peace. For once, the school felt quiet. Then a shadow fell across her table. She looked up. Jayden. Neither of them spoke immediately. "Can I sit?" he asked. Elena nodded. "Sure." He sat down. The silence that followed wasn't comfortable. But it wasn't hostile either. It was simply honest. Finally, Jayden broke it. "I think we messed that conversation up yesterday." Elena looked at him. A small laugh escaped her. "Yeah." That surprised him. It was probably the first time he'd heard her laugh. Even if it was brief. "I wasn't upset with you," she said. Jayden frowned. "Then why did it sound like you were?" Elena looked down at her hands. "Because I'm not good at explaining things." Jayden stayed quiet. Listening. "I just..." she began softly. "I'm not used to people standing up for me." The words hung in the air. Jayden's expression changed. Suddenly, everything made sense. "I didn't know that." "I know." Another pause. Then Elena finally looked up. "But I appreciated it." Jayden blinked. "What?" "The apology." She smiled faintly. "What you did." For the first time in days, Jayden smiled too. A real one. Not forced. Not polite. Real. And somehow, that simple moment felt bigger than anything else. --- The bell rang. Students began standing. The noise of school life returned. But neither of them rushed to leave. For the first time in a while, things felt normal again. As they walked back toward class together, Mia spotted them from a distance. Her eyes widened immediately. "Oh, they're talking again." Beside her, Derek grinned. "Told you they'd figure it out." Mia crossed her arms. "You owe me five dollars." Derek sighed dramatically. "Worst bet ever." --- Elena didn't hear them. Jayden didn't either. Because for once, they weren't paying attention to the rumors. They were paying attention to each other. And neither of them realized it yet. But something important had changed. The distance between them was gone. And something much more dangerous was beginning to take its place.
