Chapter 1: The Lost artifact
The dense canopy of the jungle was a quilt of shadows and light, with every step Shane took echoing the weight of his solitary mission. The humid air clung to him, and the chorus of insects filled the silence of the ancient ruins ahead. He wiped the sweat from his brow, his eyes fixed on the crumbling stone temple that stood defiant against time’s grip. This was the place—the last known site his parents had explored before vanishing all those years ago. Shane crouched at the temple’s entrance, brushing away vines that had claimed the stone as their own. Symbols carved into the walls glowed faintly in the dim sunlight, each depicting stories of magical creatures and ancient rituals. As a child, he’d seen these symbols in his parents’ journal, their significance a mystery then and still now. Inside, the temple's air was cool and heavy, laden with the scent of damp earth and age. Shane moved cautiously, his torch casting flickering shadows that seemed alive in the narrow corridor. He knew better than to trust the quiet. These temples were infamous for their traps, remnants of a civilization that had feared their secrets falling into the wrong hands. A faint hum reached his ears, soft at first, then growing louder as he approached the chamber at the end of the corridor. Shane’s heart quickened. The room glowed with an eerie green light emanating from a pedestal in the center. On it lay a pendant, a simple chain holding a crystalline orb, its core swirling with iridescent energy. “This has to be it,” he murmured, stepping closer. The pendant seemed to pulse, almost like a heartbeat, as though it had been waiting for him. Reaching out, Shane hesitated. He could feel the pendant’s power radiating, a warmth that contrasted sharply with the chill of the room. His fingers brushed the metal, and a surge of energy shot through his arm, up his spine, and into his mind. Visions flooded him—images of towering temples shrouded in mist, magical creatures both wondrous and terrifying, and an ominous darkness spreading like a stain across the land. In the visions, the temples’ glowing artifacts faltered, their light dimming under the weight of the darkness. Shane stumbled back, clutching the pendant. His breathing was ragged, his mind racing to piece together what he’d just seen. Suddenly, the ground beneath him trembled. The walls groaned, and ancient mechanisms began to shift. He had triggered something. He didn’t have time to linger. Stuffing the pendant into his satchel, Shane bolted down the corridor as the temple began to collapse around him. The jungle air hit him like a wave when he finally stumbled out of the temple, panting and covered in dust. As the entrance crumbled behind him, he pulled the pendant from his bag and stared at it. “Whatever this is, it’s not just a treasure,” Shane muttered to himself. “It’s a warning... or a summons.” For the first time in years, the memories of his parents’ disappearance didn’t feel like a closed door. With this artifact in hand, Shane knew he was on the cusp of answers. But more than that, he had the creeping suspicion that his life was about to change in ways he couldn’t yet fathom. ---
