Prologue
Five Years Ago The rain had been falling for hours. Lena Hart sat alone on a cold metal bench outside the hospital, staring at the piece of paper in her hands. She had read it so many times that she already knew every number by heart. $80,000. That was the amount she needed. Her mother's surgery was scheduled for the following morning, but without payment, the hospital wouldn't proceed. Lena squeezed her eyes shut. "Where am I supposed to get that kind of money?" She had already used everything she had. Her small savings were gone. She had borrowed from friends and relatives. She had even sold the necklace her grandmother had given her. Still, it wasn't enough. A nurse had told her that they could give her until midnight to settle the remaining balance. Midnight was only a few hours away. Lena looked through the glass doors of the hospital. Somewhere inside was the only family she had left. Her mother. She couldn't lose her. A tear slipped down her cheek. "Lena?" She quickly wiped it away and looked up. A tall man stood a few steps away from her. He was holding a black umbrella, protecting himself from the heavy rain. He looked young, perhaps only a few years older than her, but there was something about him that made him seem much older. His black suit was perfectly pressed. His expression was calm. Too calm. "Yes?" Lena answered cautiously. "Are you Lena Hart?" "Who are you?" The man walked closer. "My name is Adrian Blackwood." Lena's eyes widened. Blackwood. She knew that name. Everyone did. The Blackwood family owned one of the largest business empires in the country. Their company was practically everywhere—hotels, real estate, technology, and finance. But why would someone like him know her? "How do you know my name?" Adrian didn't answer immediately. Instead, he reached into his coat and pulled out a white envelope. He held it toward her. "Take this." Lena stared at the envelope. "What is it?" "Something you need." She hesitated before taking it. When she opened it, her breath caught. Money. A lot of it. More than enough to pay the hospital bill. Her hands immediately pushed the envelope back toward him. "I can't accept this." "You can." "No." "Lena." "I don't even know you." "You don't have to." She shook her head. "I'm not taking your money." Adrian looked at her for a moment. There was something strange in his eyes. Something she couldn't understand. "Your mother needs surgery." Lena froze. "How do you know about my mother?" Again, he didn't answer. Instead, he looked toward the hospital. "Sometimes, people come into our lives for a reason." "That's not an answer." "No." He looked back at her. "It isn't." Lena felt frustrated. "Then tell me why you're helping me." Adrian remained silent. The rain continued to fall around them. Finally, he spoke. "Consider it a promise." "A promise?" He nodded. "Someday, you'll understand." Lena stared at him. "I don't owe you anything." "I didn't say you did." "Then what do you want?" For the first time, Adrian's expression softened. "Nothing." "Nothing?" "Just take care of your mother." Lena didn't know what to say. She looked down at the envelope in her hands. Every part of her wanted to refuse. But then she thought of her mother lying in that hospital bed. She thought of the possibility of losing her. Her fingers tightened around the envelope. "Thank you." Adrian simply nodded. She looked up again. "Wait." He stopped. "Will I see you again?" He looked at her over his shoulder. For a moment, their eyes met. "You probably will." Then he walked away. Lena watched him disappear into the rain. She had no idea who he really was. She didn't know why he had helped her. And she certainly didn't know what promise he was talking about. All she knew was that a stranger had appeared when she needed help the most. She would remember his face. She would remember his name. Adrian Blackwood. But she never expected that five years later, that same man would walk back into her life. Not as a stranger. Not as a savior. But as her boss. And the man who had been keeping a secret from her all along. Because some promises are spoken aloud. Others are kept silently... until the day they can no longer remain hidden.
