work

I get to work and walk into the emergency room. I see that tonight is going to be a long one with all the people that are still waiting. I walk back to the locker rooms to put my stuff in my locker and change. I quickly clock in and look at the schedule to see where they have me scheduled. I am scheduled to check people in with taking vitals today. Something easy. I won't have to assist with a car accident or any accidents at all. I walk to the front and send the person that is in the check in room home. I look at the list of people that need to be seen and call the next person in to check there vitals. I do this for the next five hours. I go to lunch and come back. About fifteen minutes after I come back there is a man that comes in with his arm nearly cut off. I look at the man and the next thing I know I'm laying on the ground in a Beatle position saying no no no over and over again. Dameon was right. All I see is the dog all over again and think this is what my friends could look like if we don't find them. My fellow co-worker comes over and starts to talk to me in a calming voice. "Everything is going to be alright the guy is in a room now. You don't have to see him again. Take deep breaths and in through the mouth out through the nose. Relax."He says in a calming voice. I start to calm down and relax. I sit up and look around. I am thankful no one is staring at me. "Thank you. I think I'm OK now." I say standing up. "The head nurse would like to see you. I will take over here for now." "OK thank you." I say and turn around to head to the head nurses office. I get there and knock. "Come in please." She says. I walk in and just stand there. I'm afraid my breakdown will have me fired."Have a seat. You are not in trouble. I just would like to talk to you and see if there is something I can do to help. In the time you have been here I have never seen you have any breakdowns. Did something happen to you on your days off?" "I'm sorry ma'am my friend hit a dog and it was mutilated to the point it wasn't recognizable. I guess it affected me more then I thought it would. It won't happen again." "OK I am here if you need to talk. Why don't you take a couple more days off and relax. I will cover your shifts. A trauma like that can affect you for a while. Remember that things happen for a reason and that things aren't always as bad as you see all the time." "Thank you. I will take your advise and take the few days off." I say. "If there isn't anything else you need me for I am going to call for a ride. I don't think I should be driving in the state I am in." "Go ahead. We are done here. Be safe." I leave the office and walk back to the locker room clock out and change back into my clothes. I grab my phone out of the locker and call Dameon. He picks up on the second ring. "Is everything OK." He asks me concerned. "No you were right. I don't think I should be driving. Can you please come get me and take me home?" "Of course I'll be there in seven minutes. I will talk to you when I get there." He says and hangs up. I sit down on a bench in the locker room and think on what has happened the last couple days and how maybe I can get passed the thought of the dog without having a panic attack. Five minutes have passed so I go out to the front of the building to wait for him. He pulls up at exactly seven minutes since he hung up. "How are you doing? I see that you are calm right now. Do you need anything? Can I help you with something?" "I am doing better a co-worker talked me down from the panic attack. I would like to just to be able to go home." "OK. No problem. May I have your keys? My assistant will drive it to the house for you." He asks putting out his hand for me to hand them to him. I look around and see the same guy that handed me my keys at my house. "Thank you. I tell him and walk to the car after giving Dameon the keys. Dameon hands the keys to his assistant and gets to the passenger door before I could open it. He opens it for me. "Where may your car be park?" "I'm so sorry I should of thought about that. My car is parked in the employee parking lot at the south end of the parking lot. Its the white Chevy uplander." "OK thank you." He turns around and tells his assistant where the car is. Walks around the car and gets in the driver seat. He starts the car and drives off without saying another word. He is silent the whole ride to the house. When we get there he gets out and opens my door. I step out and he closes the door. "I have to get back to the club. I'm sorry to leave you at this time but it's a pressing matter I have to deal with." He says walking back around the car and getting in the driver seat. He motions for me to move away from the vehicle. When I do he just drives off.
