chapter 1: the birthday that changed everything
Ava cole had never wanted a luxurious life. At twenty-two, she lived in a tiny apartment on the outskirts of the city, worked long shifts at a neighborhood café, and spent every spare moment caring for the woman she called her mother. Life had never been easy. Bills piled up every month. Sometimes the electricity went out before payday. Sometimes dinner was nothing more than bread and tea. Yet Ava never complained. She believed happiness wasn't measured by money but by the people who stayed beside you during the hardest days. Her mother, Grace, had raised her alone. Whenever Ava asked about her father, Grace would smile sadly and change the subject. "He loved you," she would always whisper. "That's enough for now." Ava eventually stopped asking. She assumed he had died long ago. On the morning of her twenty-second birthday, nothing seemed unusual. She woke before sunrise, prepared breakfast, and quietly left for work after kissing her mother on the forehead. "Happy birthday, sweetheart," Grace said weakly. "Thank you, Mom. I'll be back early tonight." At the café, her coworkers surprised her with a small cupcake and a candle. "Make a wish!" they cheered. Ava laughed. "I wish for good health... and maybe a little less debt." Everyone burst into laughter. The day passed peacefully until evening. As Ava walked home through the cool streets, she noticed several black luxury SUVs parked outside her apartment building. People stood outside whispering. Children pointed excitedly. Ava frowned. "Did someone famous move in?" She squeezed through the crowd and climbed the stairs. Her apartment door was open. Her heart nearly stopped. Inside stood six men in expensive black suits. One elderly gentleman with silver hair stepped forward. His posture was elegant, his expression respectful. "Miss Ava Cole?" "Yes... Who are you?" The man bowed slightly. "My name is William Carter. I have served the Ashford family for over forty years." Ava blinked. "I think you've mistaken me for someone else." "We have not." Grace slowly walked out of the bedroom, leaning against the wall. She looked pale. Tears filled her eyes. "It's time," she whispered. Ava turned to her in confusion. "Mom... what is happening?" Grace held her trembling hands. "I've hidden the truth from you your entire life." "What truth?" William opened a polished leather briefcase and carefully removed several documents along with an old photograph. The picture showed a younger Grace standing beside a handsome man in an expensive suit, holding a newborn baby. The baby wore a tiny bracelet engraved with one name. AVA. Ava's hands shook. "Who is this man?" Grace could no longer hold back her tears. "Your father." "But... you said he was gone." "I lied." Silence filled the room. William spoke softly. "Your father is not only alive..." "He is Adrian Ashford." Ava frowned. "The billionaire?" William nodded. "The founder and chairman of Ashford Global Holdings." Her breathing became uneven. "No..." "That's impossible." Grace closed her eyes. "I wanted to protect you." "Protect me from what?" William exchanged a worried glance with Grace before saying quietly, "Miss Cole... your father has been searching for you for twenty-two years." Ava stared at him in complete dis
