It's Over
I looked at the face I once had loved as if he were a stranger. His hand was on the cafe table, inviting me to hold it once more. I couldn’t bring myself to meet him halfway. “It’s over,” I whispered. “It was one time. It won’t happen again!” Roman pleaded. I couldn’t look into his mesmerizing eyes. It took all of my strength not to take it all back. I thought back to when those hands would trace the lines in my palms, and when he would whisper sweet nothings into my ear. I thought about when he would tuck a strand of my hair behind my ear and press his lips to my neck. It was all tainted because he had done those things with someone else behind my back. I pushed my chair back to stand up. Roman gently grabbed my wrist. I ripped it from his grasp and turned on my heels so he wouldn’t see the tears welling up in my eyes. I wanted to run, but I knew it would be useless. I was outside the cafe when he caught up to me. “Just one more chance, I’ll be better I promise!” “You can’t love me the way I deserve to be loved.” It was then that I heard a screeching whistle behind me. It started low and grew louder and louder until it smacked onto the road. I knew the sound all too well. Roman grabbed me and pinned me to the ground to shield me from the blast. He was left unscathed by the heat. He looked down at me and I saw the concern in his face. Our hearts were beating together like they used to. The warmth of his body reawakened a small part of me that I hoped would have stayed asleep. Despite the closeness and my body not wanting him to leave, I knew that our love was ending. He lifted himself and me up off the ground. “We can talk later.” He insisted while ripping his shirt to reveal the symbol that represented hope to so many people. “Go, they need you!” I motioned to the frightened civilians who were running away from their impending doom. He lingered for only a moment before putting on his mask and flying toward the booming laughter that was coming from above. He would always be Roman to me, but to the rest of the world, he was Titan, a hero to the people. He could soar into the sky, stop bullets, and lift a school bus with ease. I bit my lip, thinking of the time when he had ripped my shirt off my body with a quick whip of his hand. He flew me up into the clouds while his mouth was caressing my neck. This thought would be interrupted as I remembered when he had told me that he had slept with someone from his team. Had he done the same for her? What powers did she have that were probably better than anything that regular me could ever do? I followed the path of people dodging building debris from the super-powered brawl breaking out from the sky. I tucked my wavy black hair into my sweatshirt hood. While we may be done, Roman’s enemies didn’t know that yet. I knew I would be target number one in an attempt to get to him. I didn’t want to risk being seen and become a hostage yet again. Screams filled the air around me, and the crowd was becoming less and less careful of where they were going. I looked up, and it was no longer just Roman fighting. The League of Heroes had joined in against Draven, a man that I knew so little about apart from the few times he had attempted to kidnap me as a bargaining chip against Titan. He’d never managed to get me too far away. While Roman knew how Draven became the way he was, he never divulged that story to me. The story was always the same when I asked him how Draven came to hate him and the rest of the League of Heroes. He was a former leaguer who thought he deserved more power in the Council. Drunk with the desire for power, he tried to take over the League of Heroes and was stopped before he could do too much damage. Ever since then, he made an oath to destroy the League of Heroes no matter the cost. Being a girlfriend, I mean ex-girlfriend, of a hero, the chaos of civilians running from a villain had lost its effect on me long ago. This was not extremely helpful at the moment because I stopped being careful about being noticed and was pushed onto my back in the street. I was in plain view for everyone to see. Of course, it was my rotten luck that Draven was looking right at me. I knew what would happen next. Roman recognized the situation only a moment too late. Draven was zooming right towards me. The thought had crossed my mind that maybe the fact that I was always a hostage may have driven Roman away from me. Maybe he was annoyed at how many times he had to save me. A stupid thought as I was about to be kidnapped yet again. Draven reached me first and scooped me up from the street. There was no use in struggling. He had the same powers that Titan had. Roman landed across from Draven. “Let her go!” “Give me what I want!” Draven boomed. His voice was deep and powerful. He was holding me just as close as Roman had held me before the fighting had begun. I could even hear his heartbeat, too. I was so sure that Roman would save me that I had no fear of what Draven would do. We had been in this situation before. “Do we have to do this again? You know I always win this battle.” Roman chuckled. Sometimes I thought he taunted Draven a little too much. His confidence could be a little mean, but then again did a villain deserve kindness? “I came prepared this time.” Draven snarled. He held all of my weight with one arm and pulled out a glowing bottle. For a moment, I felt a twinge of fear. I didn’t think Titan had any weaknesses. I had no idea what this liquid was. In one swift movement, he threw it at the League of Heroes that had assembled beside Titan. A swirling fume circled the Leaguers and one by one they dropped to the floor. Draven laughed his booming laugh and launched himself upwards with me in his arms. It wasn’t until we were flying in the air that the realization washed over me that Draven had actually done it. He had won the battle.
