Prologue
The death of a dragon is a rare thing to see. Most days, it is considered a glorious and momentous occasion! It entitles a great feast and a knighting from the king himself. The celebrations can last for weeks at a time, because it means the great kingdom of Loctavia is protected from another sky demon. One less dragon taking men and livestock is always considered something spectacular. There are only two moments in all of history that are scarcer seen than that of a dragons death, and the second scarcest moment is the death of a dragon hatchling.  Their mothers raise them in the heat of magma, far from the swords of mankind. A knight would need to climb the highest mountain, fight the creatures of the woods, and pierce the body of the mother dragon before he could even comprehend touching the youngling.  It was considered an impossible task. Yet, it had been done.  The day a young knight came into the kingdom, throwing the limp scaled body of the hatchling before the king, was a day most would not forget for years to come.  That knight had found more glory than he ever could have asked for. He given gold, he was given fame, and he was given the kings only daughter.  Many would always remember how their beloved monster slaying king rose to power after the previous one would pass. He wed the princess and gifted their child with a cloak configured from the small dragons scales.  What a glorious occasion!  Everyone looked back on that day fondly. Well, all but two.  The mother of the dragonling shook the mountain with her roars.  That poor unfortunate king, he hadn’t the slightest clue he’d murdered the sole heir of dragon kind. The new king brought upon himself the first scarcest moment in history: the replacement of a dragonling. There is a rule in nature, and that rule is that balance must be kept through whatever means needed.  Mankind never knew about it, but the dragons did. They had prepared for the moment since the time elves and man lived in harmony.  If a dragon hatchling is killed by man, than the child of man is chosen to replace it.  The queen called upon Rune, the oldest of the forest spirits. The only form any mortal has ever seen her in is in that of an onyx wolf. The night the queen summoned her, she blended into the shadows of the kingdom of Locktavia.    One could not specify who was to replace the dragon, so the queen could not take the kings newborn prince.  Instead, The spirit Rune took the suffering child of a knight.  When the moon was high, the large wolf took the hungry child in her jaws. Just before she could leave, the young knight ran into his child’s room.  His swords were useless. His arrows could not pierce the great spirits skin. She took the child and leapt out the window, disappearing into the trees.  When the knight told the new king what had happened, the king declared they had eaten his child. Revenge needed to be taken before the dragons and creatures of the forest took all of the children.    The forests were set on fire that very night and the dragons were driven away.  The king rejoiced in the fact that he’d killed all the beasts and the knight mourned the loss of his child, but neither new the child was still alive and thriving amongst the dragons.
