Chapter 5: The Dark Sword

515 Words
The morning sun rose over the Whispering Forest, but Kael felt no warmth. He walked beside Mira and Ren, the Crystal of Light safely wrapped in cloth. Yet something was wrong. His sword felt heavier than before. Kael stopped. "Wait." Ren turned around. "What happened?" Kael slowly pulled out his sword. A black mark had appeared along the blade. Mira stared at it. "That wasn't there before." Suddenly, the sword whispered. "Kael..." He dropped it. The weapon struck the ground, and a wave of dark energy spread through the forest. Birds flew from the trees. The Crystal of Light began glowing. Ren stepped backward. "That's not a normal sword." Kael stared at the weapon. "I know." A shadow appeared behind him. Kael turned quickly. A tall warrior stood among the trees, wearing dark armor and carrying a long spear. "My name is Arkon," the stranger said. Ren raised his weapon. "Another servant of the Shadow King?" Arkon shook his head. "No. I came to warn you." Kael frowned. "Warn me about what?" Arkon pointed toward the sword. "That weapon is called Nightfall. It was created from the power of the Shadow Realm." Mira looked at Kael. "Then why does it belong to him?" Arkon's expression became serious. "Because the sword chooses its master." Kael looked at Nightfall. "And it chose me?" "Yes." A sudden pain rushed through Kael's hand. The symbol of Broken Fate appeared again. The forest began changing. The trees twisted. The sky darkened. Then a gigantic shadow appeared above them. A voice thundered through the forest. "KAEL!" Kael looked upward. The Shadow King's face appeared inside the clouds. "Bring me the Crystal of Light," the Shadow King commanded, "and I may spare your friends." Kael clenched his fists. "You won't touch them." The Shadow King laughed. "Then I will take everything from you." The clouds disappeared. Silence returned. Mira looked at Kael. "We need to reach the capital." Ren nodded. "Agreed." But Arkon stopped them. "You're too late." Kael turned. "What do you mean?" Arkon pointed toward the horizon. Black smoke was rising above the kingdom. Kael's heart sank. "The capital..." Ren stared in shock. "Is that smoke coming from Eldoria?" Arkon nodded. "The Shadow King's army has arrived." Kael gripped Nightfall. For a moment, the sword glowed with dark energy. Then Kael heard a whisper. "Let me show you your true power." Kael's eyes widened. He knew the sword was calling to him. And somewhere inside his heart, a part of him wanted to answer. He looked toward the burning horizon. "We're going home." Mira and Ren followed. Arkon watched them disappear into the distance. Then he quietly said: "The battle has begun." High above the kingdom, the Shadow King stood before thousands of shadow warriors. Beside him stood Darius. Darius looked toward the distant road. "Should we stop them?" The Shadow King smiled. "No." His crimson eyes glowed. "Let them come." He raised his hand. "Because when Kael reaches the castle, he will discover the greatest secret of his fate."
