Chapter 8: The Heart of Fate

761 Words
The Shadow Realm trembled. Cracks spread across the ground as a deep roar echoed beneath the ancient fortress. Kael stood beside his mother, holding Nightfall in one hand and the Crystal of Light in the other. The Shadow King watched him carefully. "Now you understand why I brought you here." Kael stared at the darkness below. "You didn't bring me here. You trapped me." The Shadow King smiled. "Sometimes fate looks like a trap." Suddenly, the floor beneath them shattered. A massive wave of dark energy erupted from the ground. Kael grabbed his mother and jumped away. BOOM! The tower began collapsing. "Run!" Kael shouted. They raced down the stairs as stones crashed around them. Outside the fortress, a gigantic black creature rose from beneath the earth. It had enormous wings and glowing eyes. Mira and Ren watched from the distant battlefield as the creature appeared above the fortress. Ren's face went pale. "What is that?" Arkon tightened his grip on his spear. "The Heart Guardian." Mira looked at him. "You know that creature?" Arkon nodded. "It protects the Heart of Fate." Back inside the fortress, Kael stared at the creature. "That's the Heart of Fate?" His mother shook her head. "No. That creature is only its guardian." Kael looked at the Shadow King. "Then where is the Heart?" The Shadow King pointed toward Kael. "Inside you." Kael froze. The Crystal of Light suddenly floated from his hand. Nightfall rose into the air. Light and darkness began circling around him. His Broken Fate symbol changed. A second symbol appeared beside it. Kael fell to his knees. "What's happening?" His mother rushed toward him. "Your powers are awakening!" Kael's eyes began glowing with both light and shadow. Then he heard voices. Thousands of voices. Kings. Warriors. Guardians. All speaking at once. "Choose your fate." Kael screamed. A powerful burst of energy spread across the Shadow Realm. The Heart Guardian suddenly stopped. Even the Shadow King stepped backward. Kael slowly stood. His clothes moved in the strange energy surrounding him. Nightfall returned to his hand. The Crystal of Light floated beside him. His mother stared in amazement. "Kael..." He opened his eyes. They were different. One glowed with light. The other carried a dark crimson glow. The Shadow King smiled. "At last." Kael raised his sword. "You wanted the Heart of Fate." The Shadow King nodded. "Yes." Kael pointed Nightfall at him. "Then you'll have to defeat me first." The Shadow King disappeared. In an instant, he appeared behind Kael. Kael blocked the attack. The impact sent a shockwave across the fortress. They moved faster than the eye could follow. Strike after strike echoed through the ruins. Kael's mother watched anxiously. "Kael, don't let the darkness control you!" Kael heard her. But Nightfall whispered again. "Use me." Kael hesitated. The Shadow King attacked. Kael blocked the blow, but the force pushed him backward. "You're still afraid of your own power," the Shadow King said. Kael clenched his fist. "No." He looked at Nightfall. "I'm afraid of becoming like you." The Shadow King became silent. Then Kael raised both the sword and the Crystal. Light and darkness collided. A giant sphere of energy formed above him. The Heart Guardian roared. The Shadow Realm began collapsing. The Shadow King looked upward. "What have you done?" Kael answered: "I chose my own fate." The sphere exploded. A wave of light and darkness swept across the realm. The Shadow King disappeared into the storm. Kael fell to the ground. His mother caught him. "Kael!" He opened his eyes slowly. "Did... we win?" She looked toward the ruined fortress. "I don't know." A deep laugh echoed from the darkness. Kael's eyes widened. The Shadow King emerged from the smoke. His armor was damaged, but he was still standing. "Not even close." He raised his hand. Behind him, the Heart Guardian opened its enormous wings. The Shadow King smiled. "Now the real battle begins." Far away, Mira and Ren saw the fortress collapse. Ren whispered: "Kael..." Mira clenched her fists. "We're going after him." Arkon looked toward the dark sky. "If you enter the Shadow Realm now, you may never return." Mira answered without hesitation. "Then we'll make sure we return together." The three warriors stepped toward the portal. Meanwhile, Kael stood again. He looked at the Shadow King. "I won't run." The Shadow King raised his weapon. "Good." The sky split apart. The Heart Guardian roared. And the fate of both worlds was about to be decided. To be continued in Chapter 9: The Battle of Two Worlds
