Chapter 33: The Contract

The demon had become anxious. He was a high-ranking demon that had managed to break through the human realm.

His actions of forcefully breaking through realms, however, weakened his powers massively. Even a contract with a measly human could only make him lose control easily.

For a long time, he had been waiting for the perfect timing to get a foothold on the human realm by taking control of a human, doing so would alleviate some of the restrictions that had been hindering the use of his powers.

Being a high-ranking demon, however, made him innately arrogant and prideful. This made him fail on the first time he had broken through the human realm. He could've managed to take over young Nick's or Gilbert's bodies back when they were still powerless but after seeing that a much more powerful human had come he believed that if he had managed to take over that human's body then he would have an even better foothold. But that led to him getting sealed by that very human.

After learning his lesson, his pride was damaged and due to his high ego, he would not let it go that easily that is why he had sworn revenge as a higher priority rather than getting a weaker human instead. He then slowly made a plan to take out the man who had given him this much humiliation. He wanted to pay back that humiliation a hundred times.

So, he waited. He waited for a long time until he had seen an opportunity. A Lord Class monster had appeared nearby, wreaking havoc in the front lines.

He then capitalized on the opportunity and had sent a lesser demon who also managed to break through the human realm to bring back the two sons of the person that he despised so much.

After the series of continuous interruptions, he had now reached the current situation. On the back of his head, he already knew.

'Ah, I'm going to lose once again.'

This time though he had a grin on his face.

He knew that he wasn't going to die. He knew that the contract would still be in the effect. If the current situation were to continue then he would have partially succeeded.

The demon then noticed the grin that it was making and changed it before it got noticed by its enemies, quickly switching it for an astonished expression as he gazed at Nick.

Nick who had previously managed to harness the power of the demon seemed like he was drunk on it, he felt that he needed to unleash all the power that he had been accumulating or else he would become swallowed by it. He wanted to kill.

He raised his right arm, after doing so, flames had erupted from his fingers. Those flames looked a lot different compared to what his fathers looked like, particularly its color and the vibes that it gave out. It seemed like it would a hungry beast that was going to devour anything that it touches.

Cray was also feeling the power of those black flames. It was like the starving beast who had seen meat right in front of it had just been let out of its cages as it pounced out.

At that moment Cray had learned of one of the characteristics that those black flames had. He knew that those flames weren't meant for protecting.

Those flames were meant for destroying!

He could feel it slowly covering his palm, afterward covering his whole arm.

He felt the sudden urge to destroy!

He was about to lose his control over his powers until he saw a familiar scene.

In that scene, he saw a woman that has a pale complexion. She was lying in her bed with that frail body of hers. She made a smile as she held Nick's hands. She whispered something that only Nick could hear.

Meanwhile, outside the Trial of Fire, Anastasia had managed to regroup with the Chen's.

"The plan had no bumps so far. The soldiers who have been confirmed to have captured the Einder descent are now confronting a Lord Class monster." Anastasia had reported to Ye Chen as she opened a map.

They are currently here. All we need to do is wait for the soldiers to be killed by the Lord Class then we'll storm in ourselves.

Ye Chen was in deep thought when he suddenly asked, "Are you sure that the Lord Class monster is under your direct control?"

"Yes, the ones out of our direct control are only those who are below the lord class. As I said a while ago, we have controlled ten Lord Class monsters. Those monsters have several lower ranked monsters beneath them which follows them at their beck and call." Anastasia then took out a chip and showed it to everyone present.

"We have perfected our control of them through the use of our newly developed product." She smiled as she saw how everyone was mesmerized by what she was holding.

"Our team had successfully managed to control Lord Class monsters after continuously trying it out for ten years. The only downside to it would be that the controlled Lord Class monsters wouldn't be able to understand complex orders." She said everything as if she was making a sales pitch. She was simply marvelous, almost everyone was looking at her in awe.

Almost everyone, the reason the word was used was because of Ye Chen as he didn't appear to be that much impressed by it. He still had doubts lingering on his mind.

"I have a question, I wonder if the device would still be able to control the monster if it entered the berserk phase, would it be able to hold back its instincts?"

His sharp gaze fell onto Anastasia, waiting for an answer.

Seeing his sharp gaze, Anastasia cleared her throat. She was somewhat surprised by Ye Chen's question. The answer was that "It cannot."

She then looked distastefully at Ye Chen. His question would surely cause a disturbance with their cooperation. He was simply looking for discord. She couldn't understand why he would do this.

A voice of protest could be heard on the men on Ye Chen's side. "What? A Lord Class monster? I haven't been informed that we will be facing a Lord Class monster! Moreover, this monster can't even be controlled in its berserk mode! Wouldn't we be just wasting our lives?"

The voice had come from one of the men who were in a different faction in the Chen Clan. He was originally from the Long Clan which had sought asylum because they were also included on the cleanup list that the empire had made a long time ago. They were the ones who had taken the full brunt of the damage from the clean up as they had acted as the vanguard to counter their persecution to protect the retreating forces that were led by the Chen Clan.

Ye Chen gave the man a sharp look as if saying that he messed up. Although he was inwardly happy. The man that had given out his opinions wasn't a part of the script that Ye Chen had prepared beforehand, but he had managed to perceive Ye Chen's thoughts as he made this act in their favor.

Ye Chen took a mental note of the man as he now switched his attention to look at the woman who was in front of him.

"Forgive my subordinate for overstepping his boundaries. But as he had said, if the monster had begun it's rampage on its berserk mode then wouldn't we be in trouble?"

Anastasia, who had now grasped on what Ye Chen wanted, clicked her tongue. She realized that Ye Chen had done this to increase the worth of his team. He had shown that since they would be facing the possibility of danger then they should also be rewarded accordingly. She once again saw the shrewdness of the man that was in front of her.
