Chapter 1: Transmigrated as a Villain, Imprisoned Right from the Start
“Victor, you’ve really become famous!” From the study, a woman’s angry voice echoed. A beautiful woman with short black hair held up a newspaper, pointing at the image printed on it with magic stones, her anger palpable. “Are you trying to disgrace the ‘Kleivena’ family name?” Smack! She slapped the newspaper onto the man’s face. He remained expressionless as he removed the paper. His obsidian-like bright eyes quietly scanned the content. The man in the newspaper had well-defined features; even in this black-and-white print, his over-the-top handsomeness was evident. This was a face capable of captivating countless young women. But that did not include the girl standing in front of the man. His actions seemed to invite the girl, but the one in the picture smiled as she rejected him. In her smile, there seemed to be a hint of disdain. Bang! A sound pulled him back from his thoughts. The woman in front of him—Liya Kleivena—slammed her hand down on the table. “I asked you to represent the family at the banquet, and you publicly confessed to the daughter of the duke at the event!?” “She’s still a minor! Are you crazy?” Yes, the content of the newspaper stated: [Shocking! The Kleivena Viscount actually did this at the Duke's daughter’s banquet!] One must admit, this newspaper knew how to grab attention. If he had seen such a headline himself, he might have spent a few coins to buy a copy as a distraction for his afternoon tea. Unfortunately, the subject of the headline was none other than himself. Victor Kleivena. He looked at the mirror on the desk, which reflected an image that was exactly the same as the handsome man in the newspaper. However, as someone who had just crossed over today and had no memories whatsoever, Victor did not want to take the blame for this. While facing the woman’s furious shouts, he could only remain silent. Did a mentally ill person who killed someone get to avoid the death penalty by claiming they were not in their right mind? It really could happen—provided you had the right certificate. It was an adventure-type MMORPG, or "Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game." In this world of swords and magic, players could customize their characters, play different races, experience various professions, and engage in numerous quests and challenges. As for his profession... He was a power-leveler. This game required players to level up, and if they weren’t paying players (those who spend money to advance), they needed to grind for various materials and resources. If players didn’t want to spend money but also didn’t have the time to level up and gather materials, that’s when they needed a power-leveler. Additionally, in some PvP (Player vs. Player) ranked matches, players needed help to climb ranks that didn’t match their skill level, which also required the assistance of a power-leveler. In his previous life, he had worked in this field and was somewhat well-known in the power-leveling community. Just yesterday, he had been working non-stop, without eating or sleeping, for seven days, finally finishing his seventeenth order for the month. Just as he was about to settle the account... Bam! He suddenly died. His crossing over was that simple and unremarkable. Back to the point, the character he had now crossed into was named Victor Kleivena. His status was that of a viscount. In a country like the Kingdom of Karensia, where power and status were distributed based on noble titles, being a viscount was more of a symbolic identity. Aside from having a territory, there were no other privileges. In the eyes of commoners, Victor was naturally seen as a powerful and influential figure. But… getting involved with the daughter of a duke? A viscount could not compare to a duke. “Truly the villain boss, starting off at hell difficulty.” Victor muttered to himself. “What did you say?” Liya’s voice rose a few octaves, sounding both confused and dissatisfied with his indifferent attitude. This naturally drew Victor’s gaze to his nominal sister. Liya Kleivena. In the game, she was Victor Kleivena’s sister. Due to her high attractiveness, she was one of the few female characters in the game who had players chasing after her, calling her "wife." Liya’s high popularity was also closely tied to having a “villain brother.” Victor Kleivena was a boss character that players would hunt down in the early to mid-game. Due to a series of actions taken by Victor Kleivena, the regime of the Kingdom of Karensia was overthrown. The current empress issued a quest, seeking players to eliminate Victor Kleivena. This villain character ended up being quite popular, labeled with tags like “high attack, high speed, hard to defeat,” “good-looking,” and “scumbag mage.” Overall, crossing over into a game he was familiar with should have been a happy occasion. But he wasn’t feeling great. Because… Victor had many enemies. Perhaps it was because he was too prominent, or maybe it was the malice of the plot designers towards handsome characters. In the game, any NPC players encountered could potentially hold a grudge against Victor. It could be a teacher from the magic academy, an elderly man from the village, or even a dog on the street that Victor had kicked. Even more absurdly, several main storyline characters wanted him dead. This included Victor’s fiancée, his sister, and the duke’s daughter. This also contributed to Victor’s title, “scumbag mage.” There were only a few well-known female characters with high attractiveness, and Victor had managed to provoke a significant portion of them. That he was still alive could be considered a testament to Victor’s skill. Now, taking over for the original Victor, he had become the current Victor... The accumulated hatred from the original character was enough for him to drink a whole jug. ‘I wonder what time it is now.’ After Liya’s earlier inquiry, he didn’t mumble out loud this time. He simply pondered for a moment. However, this contemplation made Liya feel that he was intentionally being silent to insult her. Her anger instantly peaked. “Enough! Victor, don’t you realize your situation at all?” She angrily pulled out a contract from her designer handbag and slammed it onto the desk. “If I hadn’t used my connections to contact the academy and have them draft a professor title for you immediately, the duke’s private soldiers would have already been at your doorstep!” “But you’re just sitting here leisurely in the study, drinking coffee and reading! And now, you can’t even say thank you?” “Thank you.” “I hate you like… eh?” Liya’s words momentarily halted, blinking her eyes as she momentarily forgot how to vent her anger. In the game, any NPC that players encounter might hold a grudge against Victor. It could be a teacher from the Magic Academy, an elderly man from the village, or even a dog on the roadside that Victor might have kicked in the past. Even more absurdly, a series of main characters want him dead, including Victor's fiancée, his sister, and the duke's daughter. This is also where Victor's title, "The Scoundrel Mage," comes from. Among the few high-profile female characters, Victor has managed to attract a significant portion of their attention, which is quite an achievement in itself. Surviving this long speaks to Victor's skill at navigating these dangerous waters. Now, he has replaced the original Victor and become the current Victor... Just the accumulated hatred from the original character is enough to fill a cup. I wonder what time it is now? After earlier inquiries from Lya, he chose not to mumble anything this time. He simply reflected for a moment. However, this contemplation only made Lya feel that he was intentionally ignoring her, provoking her anger to reach its peak. “Enough! Victor, don’t you realize what kind of situation you’re in?” Fuming, she pulled out a contract from her handbag and slammed it onto the desk. “If I hadn’t used my connections to contact the academy and have them draft a professor title for you immediately, the duke’s guards would have been at your doorstep by now!” “And yet you’re just sitting here leisurely, drinking coffee and reading a book! At this point, you can’t even say a simple thank you?” “Thank you.” “I hate you like... eh?” Lya’s words faltered slightly, blinking in surprise, momentarily forgetting how to vent her anger. Victor, seated at the desk, took the contract and, while reading it, said, “Thank you for handling this for me. I’ll be more careful with my words in public next time.” “…” It seemed she wasn’t used to her notoriously infamous brother suddenly expressing gratitude. Lya absentmindedly twirled a finger around a strand of hair, her emotions feeling a bit complicated. “Anyway, I’m doing this to avoid bringing shame to the family. Also, I can only handle this temporarily; you’ll need to apologize to the duke yourself.” “Besides, don’t just thank me; think about how to deal with Miss Gwen.” “Gwen Derin?” “Yes, my nomination alone won’t be enough for the academy to agree, so I asked Miss Gwen for help.” At this point, Lya’s expression grew colder as she looked at Victor, as if he were a worm. “With a fiancée already, yet you’re still thinking of flirting around.” “No wonder you are who you are, Mr. Victor.” Victor chose to ignore the latter part of her statement. “Although I’m not sure if you’ve misunderstood anything, I will thank her.” The image of this character flashed through his mind. Gwen Derin. Gwen Derin is the second daughter of the knight family guarding the northern border and, in the game’s storyline, Victor’s fiancée. She is a true righteous knight, and righteous knights are destined to stand opposed to villainous mages. In the game, although this righteous knight is Victor's fiancée, the two have never stood on the same battlefield. Even in the final confrontation against Victor, it was Gwen who arrived and ended his life with a single thrust. Their relationship resembles a forced family marriage, devoid of any affection. The fact that the great knight Gwen personally stabbed Victor to death seems to indirectly confirm the players' suspicions. Unfortunately, the developers have never mentioned any backstory between these characters, leaving their relationship unverified until the very end. “Another dangerous character has entered the fray.” With a slight sigh in his heart, Victor felt that life was incredibly difficult. Gwen Derin is no minor character. As the strongest knight in the Kingdom of Karensia, even during the chaotic endgame phase, her combat prowess remains astonishingly formidable. In the later stages of the game, Gwen Derin even becomes a boss that players must face, and her strength is clearly etched into the minds of every player during that time. Victor has a clear understanding of her combat abilities. This woman is absolutely not to be trifled with. Otherwise, he would truly be dead. Despite having crossed over, it seems he has no cheat abilities to rely on. Noticing that Victor was feeling somewhat pressured, Lya felt inexplicably pleased. She had thought it was Victor’s pride preventing him from accepting help, but in reality, he was just contemplating how to survive in this seemingly fatal outcome. “Ha, I still have some matters to handle in the territory, so I’ll be heading back.” Lya let out a cold laugh, grabbed her bag, and prepared to leave. “Oh, right.” As she was about to exit, Lya turned back and shot Victor a pitying glance. “To think you would keep a crow as a pet, especially one with only one eye.” “Your taste is still as terrible as ever.” Bang! The study door slammed shut. Outside, the voice of a maid could be heard. “Miss Lya, do you need a carriage prepared?” But at that moment, Victor couldn’t focus on Lya leaving. He turned his head and spotted a dark creature in the corner of the desk. It looked like a crow, but slightly larger. And just as Lya had said, it had only one eye. That eye seemed to be filled with humanity, spinning around curiously. Finally, its one eye met Victor’s gaze. Then, it revealed a human-like smile. “Hello, I am the evil god—Habika.”
