For several seconds, nobody moved ,nobody spoke the throne room remained trapped in a silence so complete that Seraphina could hear her own heartbeat.
"I came for her",the words echoed endlessly inside her mind. Her.....not a treaty,not an alliance,not a kingdom.
"Her."
The room exploded,"What?", "Impossible!","This is outrageous!"
Several nobles rose from their seats at once, voices crashed into one another, arguments erupted from every corner of the chamber, some looked horrified others looked relieved andfew looked calculating. As if already measuring what Seraphina's life was worth compared to the kingdom's survival. The realization made her stomach twist.
King Adrian stood abruptly.
"Silence!"
The command echoed through the hall.
Gradually the shouting died but the tension remained.
The king's gaze locked onto Lucien.
"You expect me to hand over my daughter?"
Lucien did not flinch.
"I expect you to make a choice."
The simplicity of the answer sent another wave of anger through the room.
Lord Harrow nearly choked.
"A choice?" he barked.
"This is blackmail!"
Several nobles nodded immediately.
Lucien's expression never changed.
"If I wished to blackmail you," he said calmly, "your walls would already be burning."
The room froze....
Nobody could argue with that because everyone knew it was true.
The imperial army waiting beyond the kingdom's borders was larger than anything they could defend against.War would not be difficult, itwould be brief and devastating.
King Adrian's hands tightened around the armrests of his throne.
"What guarantee do I have that my people will remain safe?"
Lucien answered immediately.
"They will."
"You expect me to trust your word?" king Adrian asked
"No." Lucien replied
For the first time, something almost resembling emotion crossed Lucien's face not anger, not amusement but certainty.
"I expect you to trust reality."
The words landed harder than any threat because reality was precisely the problem. Reality said the kingdom was weak, reality said famine was spreading, reality said their allies had abandoned them and reality said Lucien could destroy everything if he wished.
Seraphina felt something cold settle inside her chest. For the first time, she understood something terrifying.
Lucien was not negotiating, negotiation required uncertainty. He had none,he had arrived already knowing the outcome.
The discussion continued for another hour.
Perhaps longer.
Seraphina stopped paying attention.
The nobles argued, the generals protested,he advisors searched desperately for alternatives but every path ended in the same place.
War Or surrender.
Every road led back to her
Eventually she stood.
The movement immediately silenced the room.Dozens of eyes turned toward her including Lucien's.
For the first time since entering the hall, she looked directly at him really looked at him.His face revealed almost nothing no triumph,no satisfaction,no impatience.Nothing.
That somehow made him even harder to understand.
"May I ask a question?"
Her voice remained calm.
Lucien inclined his head. "Ask."
The entire room watched.
Seraphina swallowed, then forced herself to speak.
"Why me?"
The question hung between them simple, direct and honest. For the first time all afternoon, genuine curiosity appeared throughout the room.Everyone wanted the answer.Lucien looked at her for several seconds.
Long enough to make her uncomfortable, long enough to make the entire court hold its breath.
Then he said quietly:
"Because no one else will do."
Confusion rippled through the room. That was not an answer,at least not a complete one.
Seraphina felt irritation rise immediately, "What does that mean?"
Lucien's gaze never left hers, "It means exactly what I said."
And that was all no explanation ,no clarification nothing. The answer somehow made everything worse and the meeting ended shortly afterward not because anyone reached a solution.Because everyone understood there wasn't one.One by one, the nobles left the throne room.Their whispers followed them fear, speculation, rumors.
Seraphina remained seated long after everyone else departed.
Eventually only she and her father remained.
The silence felt heavier than before.King Adrian looked older than she had ever seen him.
For a long time neither spoke.
Then finally he whispered:
"I am sorry."
The words shattered something inside her not because she expected them because she knew he meant them. And because they sounded like the apology of a man who already knew he was going to fail.
Outside the palace windows, evening slowly descended over the kingdom. The city continued moving, merchants closed their stalls, children returned home, church bells rang.People laughed, people argued, people lived most of them had no idea that their future now depended on a single decision.
A decision Seraphina had never been asked if she wanted to make.
Far beyond the palace walls, imperial banners moved in the wind.
Waiting!!!
Just like their emperor waiting for the answer everyone already feared.
