The dead Queen's warning
The wedding was over, and the music had faded into silence hours ago. The grand hall that had been overflowing with nobles, ministers, generals, and foreign dignitaries now stood empty. Their smiles were gone, their congratulations had disappeared with them, their curiosity had followed them into the corridors of the palace where rumors would undoubtedly spread before morning, but now there was only silence. Princess Seraphina sat alone on the edge of a bed large enough for three people and stared at a room that did not belong to her. Nothing belonged to her anymore, not the towering marble fireplace glowing softly in the darkness, not the silk curtains cascading from the ceiling like waterfalls of silver, not the golden candelabras illuminating the chamber with warm light, not the crown resting upon the table beside her and not even the title everyone had forced upon her"Empress." The word felt strangely heavy like a chain disguised as jewelry. Slowly, she lowered her gaze to her hands even though they looked unfamiliar, the sleeves of her wedding gown spilled over her wrists in layers of silver embroidery. Diamonds glittered against pale fabric whenever the firelight touched them. Every noble person in the empire would have envied this dress. Seraphina hated it because it reminded her that this was real, the marriage, the empire, the palace and him. A month ago, she was the daughter of a king, a princess. Someone whose future, though uncertain, had at least belonged to her. Now she belonged to Emperor Lucien, the most feared ruler on the continent, the man whose name alone could silence council chambers and start wars before a sword was ever drawn. The man who had appeared at her kingdom's borders with enough soldiers to erase everything she had ever known. She could still remember the day the news arrived: the panic, the fear, the whispers spreading through the palace faster than wildfire, servants dropping trays, nobles abandoning dignity and generals arguing over defenses they all knew would fail. Everyone had expected demands for gold, land, trade routes, military surrender. That was how powerful rulers behaved, but Lucien had asked for none of those things. He had looked her father in the eyes and demanded only one thing:"Her." A bitter laugh escaped her lips, the sound startled her because it echoed strangely inside the enormous chamber before disappearing into the silence. She pressed her lips together immediately. If she allowed herself to think about home, she would cry, and she refused to cry—not tonight, not here, not inside his palace. Outside her chamber, distant footsteps echoed through the corridors, guards changing positions and servants finishing their duties. An empire that never seemed to sleep, everything felt foreign, cold and wrong. She rose from the bed and crossed the room slowly. The polished floor reflected candlelight beneath her feet. Every step reminded her how far she was from home, the thought arrived before she could stop it. Suddenly she remembered her mother's garden, the scent of roses after rain, summer afternoons spent beneath white stone arches covered in climbing flowers and her mother laughing softly while trimming roses that never seemed to stop blooming. For a moment, Seraphina could almost smell them, then the memory vanished. She remembered the lake behind the palace, the places she used to visit whenever the walls of court felt too small. When she was younger, she believed the water stretched toward freedom. Now she knew better, freedom was not a place, it was a privilege and hers had been traded away for peace and her chest tightened. The library surfaced next, rows of towering shelves, dust floating through golden sunlight, secret corners where she hid from lessons, nobles, and expectations. She had spent entire afternoons there pretending stories were safer than reality. Sometimes they were and sometimes they weren't. Then she thought of Helena and a painful smile touched her lips. Her childhood maid would probably be lecturing servants at this very moment. "Eat properly." "Sleep properly." "Stop worrying about things you can't control." Seraphina could practically hear the words Helena had repeated them so often they felt carved into memory. The woman had spent years trying to convince her that the weight of an entire kingdom did not belong on her shoulders. Unfortunately, nobody else seemed interested in carrying her. The smile faded. A sharp ache settled inside her chest. She wondered if Helena had cried after she left. She wondered if her father had, and she wondered whether anyone was standing on the palace balcony tonight looking toward the road she had traveled, wondering if she was safe or wondering if she was happy. The thought nearly broke her, so she pushed it away because home was hundreds of miles behind her and tomorrow would not bring it back. Tomorrow she would wake inside Lucien's empire, tomorrow she would still be Empress and tomorrow she would still belong here whether she wanted to or not. . The memory hurt because Helena wasn't there, neither was her father, neither was anyone she loved. For the first time in her life, Seraphina truly understood what loneliness felt like. A month ago she had been surrounded by familiar faces. Now she stood in the heart of an empire where nobody belonged to her, not a single person. Her gaze drifted toward the enormous mirror positioned near the far wall. It was beautiful , ancient and its silver frame twisted into delicate vines that seemed almost alive beneath the flickering candlelight. For a moment she simply stared at herself. The woman reflected that she looked every bit like an empress, dark hair carefully pinned, jewels woven through elegant braids, a crown resting atop her head and a gown worth more than entire villages. She looked powerful and untouchable, she looked exactly like the woman everyone expected her to become, but she felt trapped. A prisoner dressed as royalty, her fingers drifted toward the sapphire pendant hidden beneath her gown and her mother's necklace. The last piece of home she still possessed, she closed her hand around it. The familiar shape brought a small measure of comfort only a small one. Her thoughts drifted toward Lucien. The wedding itself felt distant, now almost unreal. She remembered standing beside him before hundreds of witnesses, remembered the vows and remembered the silence that followed whenever he entered a room. People did not merely respect Lucien, but they feared him. Even during the ceremony, she had noticed the way servants avoided meeting his eyes, the way nobles measured every word and the way generals stood straighter whenever he approached. It wasn't normal, it wasn't healthy and yet nobody seemed willing to question it openly. She frowned. The strangest thing about Lucien was not his power, it was how little she actually knew about him. He rarely spoke. He revealed nothing, even standing beside him for hours during the ceremony had taught her almost nothing. The man was a wall, an impossibly calm wall. A sudden chill brushed against her skin. Seraphina frowned. The fire was still burning, yet the room had become colder, much colder. Slowly she rubbed her arms but the feeling worsened. A strange unease settled over her, the kind that appeared when someone was watching. She looked toward the door, nothing, toward the windows, nothing and toward the fireplace, nothing. Then she looked back at the mirror and her breath caught. For a moment she thought she saw movement, something small, something impossible. The reflection seemed... wrong, she blinked and everything appeared normal again and silence filled the room. Seraphina released a slow breath of fatigue, that was all. The day had been exhausting. She turned away, then stopped. Every candle flame in the room flickered simultaneously, the temperature dropped again, and a shiver raced down her spine, slowly, very slowly. She turned back toward the mirror and her heart stopped. Someone stood behind her, a woman, tall, pale, motionless for one horrifying second. Seraphina thought an intruder had entered the room. She spun around nothing. The chamber was empty, and her pulse hammered painfully against her ribs. She swallowed, then looked back at the mirror. The woman was still there, standing directly behind her reflection watching, waiting. The stranger was beautiful, terrifyingly beautiful. Long black hair flowed over a white gown untouched by age, her skin looked almost translucent beneath the candlelight, but it was her eyes that frightened Seraphina most. They looked sad, not ordinary sadness, the kind that lasted decades, the kind that survived death.the woman tilted her head slightly. Seraphina couldn't move, couldn't breathe and couldn't look away. Slowly, very slowly the woman stepped closer, not in reality, only in the reflection, then the distance between them vanished. A cold breath brushed against the back of Seraphina's neck. Her entire body froze. The woman's lips curved into a faint smile, a tragic and lonely smile. Then she whispered three words, soft enough to be mistaken for imagination. "Do not trust the king." Every candle in the room went out, darkness swallowed everything and somewhere inside the blackness, a woman laughed.
