Chapter 2:Three Months EarlierTyrant's Bride

926 Words
The kingdom had been dying for years not suddenly, not dramatically but slowly. Like a candle burning itself away while everyone pretended the flame was as bright as it had always been. Princess Seraphina noticed the signs long before most people did. She noticed them in the market stalls that grew emptier every season. In the worried expressions merchants tried to hide whenever taxes were discussed. In the letters arriving from distant provinces, each carrying new complaints about failed harvests, disappearing trade routes, and villages struggling to survive another winter. The kingdom was still standing but only barely. The morning sun filtered through the tall windows of her chamber as Seraphina stood overlooking the capital. From a distance, the city looked beautiful.Golden rooftops shimmered beneath sunlight, church bells echoed softly through the streets, smoke rose peacefully from chimneys. It looked like a kingdom at peace but appearances lied Seraphina knew that better than anyone. Her gaze drifted toward the marketplace below. Even from this height she could see the differences.Too many empty stalls too many arguments, too many soldiers stationed where they had never been needed before.A child tugged desperately at his mother's sleeve beside a bread vendor. The woman counted coins twice before lowering her hand and walking away empty-handed the child followed silently,Seraphina looked away. Some things hurt more because they happened quietly. A knock interrupted her thoughts "Your Highness?"The familiar voice immediately softened the heaviness inside her chest. "Come in." she dragged The door opened,Helena entered carrying breakfast.Unlike most palace servants, Helena never bowed excessively or treated Seraphina like fragile royalty. She had helped raise her,at times she felt more like family than half the nobles in court. "You're awake early again," Helena said. Seraphina smiled faintly, "You mean I never slept." Helena frowned, "You need rest." "The kingdom needs rest." Helena sighed, "there it is." "There what is?" Seraphina asked "That thing you do."Helena replied Seraphina raised an eyebrow, "What thing?" "You worry about problems that aren't supposed to belong to you."Helena responded A small laugh escaped Seraphina. "If I don't worry about them, no one will." The statement sounded like a joke but neither woman laughed because both knew it was partly true. Helena placed the tray of fresh tea, bread, fruit down..Less food than the palace served five years ago even royal meals had become smaller. Another sign nobody discussed openly. "His Majesty has requested your presence in the council chamber." Seraphina closed her eyes. "Again?" "I'm afraid so." Helena said The princess released a slow breath. Lately every day seemed to begin and end with meetings. Meetings that solved nothing, meetings where wealthy men argued about problems while other people suffered from them. She hated court politics not because they were boring because they mattered. And because too many people treated them like a game. An hour later, Seraphina stepped into the council chamber. The arguments had already begun. Raised voices echoed from every corner of the room, maps covered the massive table. The reports were scattered everywhere. Several nobles spoke over one another "...the northern provinces need more soldiers!" "We don't have enough funding!" "Then raise taxes!" "The people can barely afford food as it is!" "Then reduce military spending!" "And invite invasion?" The room erupted again. Seraphina remained near the doorway watching, listening, learning People revealed themselves most clearly during disagreements. One noble only spoke when money was involved another blamed every crisis on neighboring kingdoms.A third spent more time protecting his reputation than solving problems. And seated at the head of the table was her father, King Adrian. He looked exhausted the realization hurt. When she was younger, she had believed kings were unbreakable. Now she understood they simply broke more quietly than everyone else.Dark circles rested beneath his eyes, his posture remained straight. His expression remained controlled but fatigue lingered beneath everything. He noticed her arrival and offered a small nod. The closest thing to affection he could publicly display, Seraphina returned it. The arguments continued for nearly three hours nothing was solved, several problems became worse. Two nobles nearly shouted each other into a duel. By the time the meeting ended, Seraphina felt more tired than before it began. One by one the council members left. Eventually only she and her father remained. The silence felt strange after so much noise. King Adrian rubbed his forehead. For several seconds neither spoke. Then Seraphina said quietly, "You haven't slept." A tired smile appeared, "You sound like your mother."The smile hurt more than if he had looked angry because it vanished almost immediately. The king stared down at the scattered reports."Every week another province asks for aid." His voice sounded older, "Every week the treasury grows smaller." Seraphina remained silent. "There are days," he admitted quietly, "when I no longer know what the right decision is."that confession startled her. Kings weren't supposed to say things like that not aloud, not even privately. For the first time she saw not a king, just a father carrying a kingdom on failing shoulders. Before she could answer, the chamber doors suddenly burst open.A guard stumbled inside breathing hard, covered in dust, pale with fear. Both of them stood immediately. The guard dropped to one knee. "Your Majesty..." His voice shook ,the room suddenly felt colder "What is it?" the king demanded. The guard swallowed. Then spoke the words that would change everything."The northern border has been breached." Silence!!! Absolute silence. The king's face hardened, "By whom?" The guard looked up. Fear flashed through his eyes not fear of war, fear of a specific man. A specific name. "The Emperor." Seraphina felt her stomach tighten. The guard continued, "Lucien has arrived."
