Chapter 5 The Demand

836 Words
The throne room had never felt so small. It was one of the largest chambers in the kingdom, built generations ago to intimidate foreign rulers and impress visiting nobles. Massive pillars stretched toward a painted ceiling. Sunlight poured through towering stained-glass windows. Gold lined the walls. Banners hung proudly from stone arches. Yet somehow, none of it felt grand anymore not today.Today, the room felt crowded with tension every noble in the kingdom had gathered, ministers, generals, merchants, advisors and priests.Every person whose future depended on the kingdom's survival stood within those walls and every one of them was afraid. Seraphina sat beside her father's throne, her posture remained straight, her expression remained calm. Years of court life had taught her how to hide discomfort but inside, unease coiled tighter with every passing second.Across the room stood Emperor Lucien he had removed neither his sword nor his gloves.A subtle insult or perhaps a reminder nobody knew, nobody dared ask.The imperial generals stood behind him like statues motionless, silent and watching everything. The contrast between the two courts was almost embarrassing. The kingdom's nobles whispered nervously among themselves. Lucien's men did not speak at all. King Adrian rose slowly. The room fell silent. "Emperor Lucien." His voice remained steady. It was impressive considering the circumstances. "You have entered my kingdom with an army large enough to conquer it." Nobody moved, nobody breathed. "We have welcomed you into our palace despite the fear your arrival has created." The king paused. His eyes met Lucien's. "If there is a purpose behind this visit, let us hear it openly." Silence followed. Lucien did not answer immediately. He simply looked around the room ,one glance that was all. Yet nobles suddenly seemed uncomfortable beneath it as though they were being measure, judged, found lacking. Eventually, Lucien spoke. His voice was lower than Seraphina expected calm, controlled ,dangerous calm. "I came because your kingdom is dying." The words struck the room like a slap. Several nobles immediately shifted. One looked offended, another looked angry, most looked terrified because everyone knew he was right the kingdom was dying, they simply hated hearing it spoken aloud Lucien continued. "Your treasury is nearly empty." Nobody responded. "Your harvests continue to fail." Silence. "Your trade routes are collapsing." The room remained frozen. "Your military lacks the resources to sustain prolonged conflict." Each sentence landed harder than the last not because they were insults but because they were facts.King Adrian's jaw tightened but he said nothing. Lucien's gaze swept across the nobles. "And still you argue among yourselves while your people suffer." Several faces turned away. Seraphina felt something uncomfortable stir inside her anger bot because he was wrong because he was speaking truths nobody else dared say. The silence stretched, then one noble suddenly stood.Lord Harrow,a rich, influential and cowardly. "If you came to insult us," he snapped, "then perhaps Your Imperial Majesty should return to his empire." Several people immediately looked horrified. The man clearly realized his mistake too late. Lucien looked at him. Nothing more, just looked. Lord Harrow visibly swallowed. His confidence disappeared almost instantly. The Emperor didn't threaten him, didn't raise his voice and didn't move.Yet the noble sat down again without another word. The room became even quieter. Seraphina had never witnessed authority like this.It wasn't forced,it simply existed. Lucien returned his attention to King Adrian. "I did not come to insult you." His voice remained level. "I came because your kingdom stands at a crossroads." King Adrian stared at him. "What exactly are you proposing?" For the first time, something shifted behind Lucien's eyes not emotion, decision. As though they had finally reached the reason he came. The atmosphere changed immediately everyone felt it,every noble leaned forward, every servant froze, every guard stood slightly straighter even Seraphina found herself holding her breath. Lucien took one slow step forward then another. The sound of his boots echoed through the chamber deliberately, measured and fial. When he stopped speaking again, his voice carried through every corner of the room. "I did not come for gold." Silence. The words settled heavily over the court. Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. Lucien continued. "I did not come for land." A noble dropped his goblet, the sound echoed loudly no one looked at him,no one cared because suddenly everyone understood this was something else ,something worse.Or perhaps something stranger. Lucien slowly turned his head, his gaze moved across the room past the ministers, past the generals and past the advisors until it settled on Seraphina. The moment felt unreal like the entire world had narrowed to a single point.Seraphina felt her stomach tighten. The room disappeared, the voices disappeared even breathing became difficult. Lucien held her gaze unwavering ,certain as though he had already made this decision long ago. Then he spoke "I came for her." The silence that followed was absolute. No one moved,no one breathed and no one seemed capable of understanding what they had just heard. Seraphina stared at him certain she must have misunderstood, certain she had imagined it.Yet the look in his eyes left no room for doubt. He meant exactly what he said. And suddenly... The future she thought she still possessed no longer belonged to her not anymore.
