Chapter 4 The Arrival

811 Words
The Emperor arrived three days later. The capital knew before the palace did, people always knew first rumors traveled faster than horses. By sunrise, citizens crowded rooftops, windows, balconies, and market streets. Every road leading toward the palace had become lined with silent spectators,Nobody celebrated, nobody cheered they waited.Fear had a way of making people quiet. From the highest balcony of the royal palace, Seraphina looked down at the city below.Thousands of people, thousands of eyes fixed on the northern road. The morning air felt unusually cold. Beside her stood King Adrian, his expression remained composed.Only someone who knew him well would notice the tension hidden beneath it, Seraphina noticed. He had barely slept since receiving news of Lucien's arrival. Perhaps he had not slept at all. A distant sound echoed through the city.Drums, slow, steady, deliberate and the crowd immediately fell silent even conversations disappeared. The sound grew louder, closer and closer. Then the imperial banners appeared, black, silver and gold. The colors of an empire powerful enough to make kingdoms surrender without battle. A murmur moved through the crowd, then died immediately.Because the army appeared rows upon rows of soldiers marched into view, perfectly synchronized. Not a single step out of rhythm, not a single voice raised, not a single movement wasted the discipline was unnerving. Seraphina had seen armies before, this did not feel like an army it felt like a machine.Thousands of soldiers moved through the streets.Yet the city somehow seemed quieter than before they arrived. The citizens stepped aside automatically, nobody needed orders, nobody resisted. The soldiers did not threaten anyone, they simply advanced and somehow that was worse. At the center of the formation rode the imperial generals each looked dangerous enough to command fear on their own. Yet none of them drew attention because attention naturally moved elsewhere toward the rider behind them, toward the man everyone was waiting for,"Lucien." Seraphina felt it before she properly saw him a strange shift in the atmosphere. An invisible pressure .The kind that made people straighten unconsciously. The kind that made conversations stop, the kind that demanded attention without asking for it. Then she finally saw him. And for a moment... She understood why people feared him. The Emperor rode a black horse large enough to seem almost unnatural. Its dark coat gleamed beneath sunlight, its movements were calm, controlled just like its rider. Lucien wore no crown,o unnecessary jewels,no excessive decoration,je did not need them. Authority surrounded him more effectively than gold ever could. His clothing was simple by royal standards.Black military attire trimmed with silver and dark cloak moved behind him in the wind, nothing extravagant, nothing designed to impress. Yet somehow impossible to ignore. His face was striking not because of beauty alone but because of control.Every feature appeared composed, measured, unreadable. His expression revealed nothing not arrogance, not anger, not amusement, nothing. His eyes remained fixed ahead watching, calculating as if the entire city had already been assessed long before he arrived. The realization sent a chill through Seraphina this was not a man entering unfamiliar territory. This was a man entering a place he already understood. Below them, citizens lowered their heads. Some bowed. Others simply looked away. Nobody met his gaze. Not for long. Even from the balcony, Seraphina could feel the effect he had on people. The stories had been contradictory the reality was somehow worse because reality provided no answers, only questions. Lucien guided his horse through the palace gates. The massive doors opened immediately b hesitation,no delay. The imperial army remained outside only a select group continued forward generals, advisors, elite guards and Lucien himself. The courtyard became unnaturally silent. The sound of hooves echoed against stone. Nothing else. No birds. No servants speaking. No movement. Silence followed him like a shadow. Beside Seraphina, King Adrian released a slow breath. A tiny movement. Barely visible. But she saw it ,for the first time in her life...Her father looked nervous. The realization unsettled her more than Lucien's arrival. Kings feared many things but they rarely showed it. Lucien dismounted smoothly. One of his guards immediately moved forward the Emperor ignored him. His attention shifted upward toward the palace, toward the balcony.Toward her,Seraphina's breath caught. The distance between them was enormous, yet somehow she felt seen immediately. Those dark eyes found her without searching, without hesitation, without uncertainty. For several seconds neither looked away, the entire world seemed to disappear. The crowd, The soldiers., The palace., Everything. There was only that gaze, cold, steady, unreadable. Then Lucien looked away just like that. As though the moment had never happened,as though he had already learned everything he needed. A strange frustration flared inside Seraphina, she wasn't sure why. Perhaps because she had learned nothing not from the rumors, not from the stories, not from seeing him.If anything, she understood him less now than before. The palace doors opened. "Servants bowed." "Guards stepped aside." And Emperor Lucien entered the royal palace. The meeting that would determine the kingdom's future had begun. Seraphina suddenly had the unsettling feeling that her own future had already been decided long before he arrived. She just didn't know it yet......
