Chapter 1: The New Kid
The bell rang, signaling the start of yet another boring Monday morning. I sighed, dragging my feet toward the classroom. Senior year. A year I had every intention of coasting through, making good grades, and leaving this tiny town behind. There wasn’t much here to hold my attention—except for the usual drama, but honestly, I had zero interest in it. I sat down in my usual spot, near the back of the class. The teacher, Mrs. Davis, was busy scribbling something on the board when the door opened with an unexpected bang. “Ah, yes. Everyone, meet our new student,” Mrs. Davis announced in her usual cheery tone. I didn’t even bother looking up at first. I knew the routine. New kids came in all the time, and most of them weren’t worth a second glance. But then, the sound of footsteps approached. A slow, confident stride that was almost too calculated. The scent of cologne hit me first—deep, rich, and oddly familiar—before I even saw him. When I did look up, my eyes immediately locked with his. Dark hair, perfectly tousled, with eyes that were the color of a stormy sea—cold, piercing, like they were judging everything in their path. His face was sharp, angular, with a jawline that could cut glass. He wasn’t the type of guy you just noticed—he was the type you remembered. “Damien Black,” the teacher said, introducing him. “Why don’t you sit next to Lexi?” I blinked, snapping out of my daze as Mrs. Davis pointed to the empty desk beside mine. Great. Just what I needed—another guy who would probably try too hard to be mysterious and fail miserably. Damien didn't say anything as he walked toward my desk, his presence radiating an aura of something… dangerous. Or maybe it was just the way he carried himself, like he already owned the place. He dropped his bag next to the desk and sat down, the whole class suddenly feeling smaller. “Hi,” he said quietly, but it was more of a command than a greeting. I raised an eyebrow, not bothering to respond immediately. I wasn’t here to make friends with the new guy, especially not some dark, brooding character who was probably one of those bad boys every other girl in this school would be drooling over. And judging by the way every single female in the room was eyeing him, I knew I wasn’t wrong. After a few seconds, he looked over at me, his gaze cool but intense. “You’re not like the others, are you?” I rolled my eyes, barely hiding the sarcasm. “Well, lucky for you, I’m not interested in being your type.” A small, almost unnoticeable smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. “That’s a shame. I’m used to getting what I want.” I laughed under my breath. “Yeah? Good luck with that.” And just like that, my annoyance was solidified. Another arrogant jerk who thought the world revolved around him. What was it with these guys? At least he was different from the usual cookie-cutter type. But that didn’t mean I was about to go down the “bad boy” path. I shifted my attention to the front of the class as Mrs. Davis started the lesson, but I could still feel his eyes on me. It was like he was studying me, taking in every tiny detail, as if I were some kind of puzzle he was trying to solve. The class dragged on, and I tried my best to ignore the unnerving presence beside me. But it wasn’t easy. No one else could resist the charm or the dark pull that he seemed to have on everyone, and I wasn’t about to be the next victim. By the time the bell rang, signaling the end of the period, I was already counting the minutes until I could get out of there. “See you around, Lexi,” Damien said as we stood up, his voice like velvet, smooth and tempting. I gave him a half-hearted nod, feeling the familiar rush of irritation flare up inside me. I didn’t need to get mixed up with someone like him. I wasn’t going to fall for his act—whatever it was. But something told me that wasn’t going to be as easy as I hoped. Walking out of the classroom, I tried to shake the feeling of being watched. It wasn’t the first time I’d felt it, but this time it felt different. Almost… intentional. I wasn’t ready for this. But I had a feeling Damien Black was about to change everything.
