Chapter 6

821 Words
Elena stood on the stage, the bright lights of the television studio shining down on her. She was the picture of confidence and success. She was impeccably dressed in one of her own designs. The launch of her clothing line had been a massive hit, and today she was the guest of honor on a popular talk show. In the background, her cousin, Jessica and a few close friends watched with pride and excitement. As Elena waited for the interview to begin, her phone buzzed with a message. She discreetly glanced at it and felt a warm flush spread across her face. *From Charlie: Good luck with your interview, Elena. You’re going to be amazing. I’m so proud of you.* She smiled, her heart swelling with affection. Charlie's support meant the world to her. But there was also a nagging worry—how to navigate the public eye while keeping their complicated relationship under wraps. The host -Julia, was a charismatic woman. She introduced Elena with enthusiasm. "Today, we have the incredibly talented designer, Elena Martin who has taken the fashion world by storm with her new clothing line. Welcome, Elena!" "Thank you, Julia. It's an honor to be here," Elena replied, her voice steady. They talked about her journey, her inspirations, and the challenges she faced in building her brand. The interview was going smoothly until Julia asked a question that made Elena’s heart skip a beat. "So, Elena, our viewers are curious—are you currently in a relationship?" Elena hesitated, her mind racing. She glanced at Amelia, who gave her a subtle nod of encouragement. But in that split second, Elena made a decision she instantly regretted. "No," she replied, her voice barely betraying her inner turmoil. "I’m focusing on my career right now." Julia smiled and moved on, but Elena felt a pang of guilt. She knew Charlie would be watching, and she dreaded his reaction. **** Charlie sat in his living room, watching the broadcast with a proud smile until Elena answered the relationship question. His smile faded, replaced by a deep sense of betrayal and hurt. How could she deny their relationship on national television? When the interview ended, Charlie’s phone buzzed with messages from his friends, teasing him and expressing confusion about Elena's answer. The anger and hurt festered inside him, and he decided he needed answers imediately. **** Elena was still at the studio, wrapping up with some post-interview photos and chats with fans, when she received a call from Charlie. She could hear the anger in his voice. "We need to talk. Now." *** Later that evening, Charlie arrived at Elena’s house, his expression stormy. Elena opened the door, her heart sinking at the sight of his hurt eyes. "Charlie, I—" "Why did you lie, Elena?" Charlie interrupted, stepping inside. "Why did you say you’re not in a relationship?" Elena closed the door and turned to face him. "Charlie, I... I didn’t know what to say. Our relationship is complicated. I thought it was better to keep it private, at least for now." Charlie shook his head, his frustration evident. "Private? Elena, I’ve been open about my feelings for you. Why can’t you do the same?" "Charlie, it’s not that simple. There’s so much at stake. My career, my reputation..." "So, I’m just a liability to you?" Charlie’s voice cracked with emotion. "I thought we agreed on no more games, no more lies." Elena reached out to touch his arm, but he pulled away. "Charlie, please try to understand. I didn’t mean to hurt you." Charlie stared at her for a moment, his eyes filled with a mix of pain and anger. "I can’t do this, Elena. Not like this." With that, he stormed out of her house, leaving Elena standing there, her heart breaking. *** Later that night, Charlie sat alone in his apartment, nursing a drink and trying to drown out his thoughts. His phone buzzed, and he saw a message from an old flame, Lisa. Despite his better judgment, he didn’t ignore it. *Lisa: Hey, Charlie. Heard about your girl on TV. Want some company?* Charlie hesitated, then replied. *Charlie: Just come over, Lisa. I need a friend.* When Lisa arrived, it was clear she had more than friendship in mind. She leaned in closer, her intentions obvious. Charlie, lost in his frustration and heartbreak, didn’t stop her at first. But as she moved to kiss him, he pushed her away. "No, Lisa. I can’t do this." Just then, the door swung open, and there stood Elena, her eyes wide with shock and hurt at the scene before her. "Elena, it’s not what it looks like," Charlie stammered, standing up quickly. But Elena didn’t wait to hear more. She turned and fled, the pain of the moment was too much for her to bear. Charlie watched her go, realizing that he had just made things infinitely worse.
