Episode 6 – “Crosscurrents”

970 Words
🌅 A Restless Morning Maya barely slept that night. The sound of waves crashing outside the cottage felt louder than usual, like the ocean itself was restless—just like her. Every time she closed her eyes, her mind replayed Malachi’s intense confession and Jason’s quiet concern. One demanded honesty. The other offered patience. And Maya? She felt stuck somewhere in between. She sat up in bed as the first rays of sunlight crept through the curtains. Emma was still asleep, curled up in blankets, completely unaware of the emotional chaos happening inside Maya’s chest. I didn’t want this, Maya thought. I just wanted a quiet week. But quiet was gone. 🌊 Emma’s “Great Idea” By late morning, Emma was wide awake and buzzing with excitement. Emma: “Okay, hear me out—boat ride. Like, a real one. There’s a guy at the pier who rents them out, and it’s supposed to be perfect today.” Maya blinked. “A… boat?” Emma: “Yes! Ocean breeze, sunshine, vibes. And before you say no—Malachi and Jason are already in.” Of course they were. Maya sighed. Saying no would mean hiding. Saying yes meant facing everything she’d been avoiding. And somehow, hiding felt worse. “Fine,” Maya said quietly. “One ride.” Emma grinned like she’d just won a prize. 🌅 The Boat Ride The boat rocked gently as it pulled away from the dock. The sea stretched endlessly around them, blue and glittering under the sun. Maya sat near the edge, gripping the railing, trying to steady her nerves. Malachi sat across from her, relaxed, sunglasses pushed up into his hair. Jason stood nearby, watching the water carefully, making sure everyone was safe. Malachi: “You look like you’re waiting for the boat to flip.” Maya shot him a look. “I don’t love surprises.” He smirked. “That’s obvious.” Jason stepped closer. “If it gets too much, just tell me. We can head back.” That simple sentence made Maya’s chest tighten. Jason always made space for her feelings. Malachi challenged them. The boat hit a small wave, jolting slightly. Maya gasped, instinctively reaching out. Malachi grabbed her wrist first. Jason steadied her other side immediately. For a moment, everything froze. Two hands. Two heartbeats. One girl caught in the middle. Maya gently pulled back, sitting down quickly. No one said anything, but the tension was unmistakable. 🌊 Beneath the Surface As the boat drifted farther from shore, Emma chatted with the guide, oblivious. Maya stared out at the water, lost in thought. Malachi leaned closer, voice low. Malachi: “You keep running away when things get real.” Maya turned to him, surprised. “I’m not running.” “Yes, you are,” he said softly. “You feel something, and instead of facing it, you hide.” Jason looked over, jaw tightening. “That’s not fair.” Malachi scoffed. “You always defend her.” Jason met his gaze. “Because she deserves space. Not pressure.” The air between them felt heavy. Maya stood abruptly. “Stop. Both of you.” They fell silent. “I didn’t ask for this,” she continued, her voice shaking. “I didn’t plan on liking anyone. I didn’t plan on being confused. But I am. And fighting over me isn’t helping.” Malachi looked away, tension written across his face. Jason nodded slowly. “You’re right. I’m sorry.” Maya swallowed hard. “I just… need time.” 🌅 The Almost Moment Later, the boat stopped near a quiet stretch of water. Emma jumped in with a laugh, splashing around. Maya stayed seated, watching. Jason sat beside her. Jason: “You don’t owe anyone anything, Maya. Not answers. Not choices.” She looked at him. His eyes were calm, sincere. “I don’t want to hurt either of you,” she whispered. Jason smiled sadly. “Sometimes, feelings don’t ask permission.” Before she could respond, Malachi climbed back onto the boat, water dripping from his hair. He looked straight at Maya. Malachi: “I don’t want to fight him. I just want you to stop pretending this doesn’t matter.” Their eyes locked. For a split second, Maya felt like the world narrowed down to just the two of them. The pull was intense, undeniable. Then Jason stood. “I’m going to help Emma,” he said quietly, giving Maya one last look before stepping away. That hurt more than she expected. 🌊 Emotional Fallout Back on shore, the group was quieter than usual. Emma finally noticed. Emma: “Okay… what happened?” Maya forced a smile. “Nothing. Just tired.” But it was a lie. That night, Maya walked alone along the beach, the sand cool beneath her feet. She replayed everything—the touches, the looks, the words left unsaid. Malachi made her feel alive. Jason made her feel safe. And she wanted both. But she knew that wasn’t how real life worked. As she stood by the water, someone approached behind her. “Hey.” She turned. Jason. “I just wanted to say… whatever happens, I’m glad I met you.” Her throat tightened. “Me too.” He smiled gently, then walked away, giving her space. Moments later, Malachi appeared from the opposite direction. “You’re going to break one of our hearts,” he said softly. Maya felt tears sting her eyes. “I know,” she whispered. “And I hate that.” 🌙 Cliffhanger That night, Maya lay awake, staring at the ceiling. For the first time, she realized something terrifying: Soon, she wouldn’t be able to stay in the middle. Soon, she would have to choose. And no matter what she decided… someone would get hurt.
