Episode 1 – “Not This Year”
The sunlight streamed through Maya Parker’s bedroom window, glinting off the stack of books on her desk. She lay sprawled across her bed, earbuds in, music loud enough to drown out her mother’s voice calling from downstairs.
Spring break. The words made her stomach twist with anxiety rather than excitement. While her classmates were packing bikinis, planning road trips, and making i********:-ready itineraries, Maya had a plan. A very careful, very boring plan: stay home, binge-watch her favorite shows, organize her room, and enjoy a week without chaos.
Her phone buzzed on the nightstand. She pulled it close, reluctantly dragging her gaze from the ceiling.
Emma Rivera: Maya! Are you seriously staying home again?!
Maya rolled her eyes and typed back quickly:
Maya: Yes. I’m not going anywhere. I like my couch.
Her phone buzzed almost instantly.
Emma: No! You need a break. Seriously, you can’t spend spring break cooped up in your room! Come on… one week… the seaside! Just you and me. Trust me.
Maya sighed and turned over. She didn’t want a “trust me” week with Emma, who had a knack for turning quiet moments into adventures she wasn’t ready for.
Maya: Emma… I like my quiet week. I don’t need adventure.
Emma: Adventure is life! Plus, there’s sun, sand, and cute boys. You will thank me.
Maya groaned and tossed the phone aside. She hated that Emma always made everything sound like it was too good to miss. But something about the way her best friend phrased it made her feel… curious.
A week alone, a week off, a week somewhere she hadn’t been. Maybe… maybe it wouldn’t be terrible.
After ten minutes of debating with herself, she texted back:
Maya: Fine. One week. But I’m not doing anything crazy.
Emma: You’re hopeless without me. Pack your bags!
🌊 Arrival at the Seaside Town
The drive to the seaside town was long, filled with Emma’s endless chatter about everything they’d do—ice cream shops, boardwalk rides, and the festival that was happening the week they’d be there. Maya stared out the window at the passing trees and houses, feeling both apprehensive and slightly excited.
The town smelled of salt and fresh air when they arrived, and colorful beach houses lined the streets like candy boxes. Emma immediately dragged Maya toward a small, local ice cream shop.
Emma: Come on! First stop, first taste of vacation!
Maya couldn’t help but smile. Maybe this wasn’t so bad after all.
She tried to relax, but as they walked, Maya couldn’t ignore the two boys leaning casually against the boardwalk railing. One had dark, messy hair, sharp eyes, and a mischievous grin; the other had a soft smile and kind eyes that seemed to study everything quietly. They were laughing together, teasing each other like best friends always did.
Emma nudged her.
Emma: Maya… look.
Maya followed her gaze. She tried to look away, tried to pretend she wasn’t interested. But something about them made her chest flutter—a feeling she hadn’t had in a while.
🌅 First Encounters
The first boy, Malachi, noticed her staring and gave a small smirk. He leaned closer to his friend Jason.
Malachi: Looks like someone’s new in town.
Jason glanced at her and smiled politely. Unlike Malachi, his warmth felt inviting rather than challenging.
Maya’s cheeks heated. She quickly turned her attention to Emma, who was busy ordering double scoops of ice cream, oblivious to the tiny drama unfolding beside them.
Emma: Maya! Don’t just stand there! Try the salted caramel!
Maya took a tentative bite. Sweet. Slightly salty. Unexpectedly good.
She realized, maybe this week could surprise her.
🌙 Evening Boardwalk Walk
That night, after settling into their rented cottage, Emma insisted they explore the boardwalk. Neon lights flickered over the shops, and the sound of arcade games and laughter filled the air.
Emma: Maya, this is perfect! See? Fun isn’t scary!
Maya smiled faintly. “Perfect” wasn’t the word she would have chosen, but she had to admit—it was… nice.
Near the pier, she almost tripped on a loose board and collided with someone solid.
Maya: Oh! I’m so sorry!
Malachi (grinning): No worries. Guess I should’ve been watching where I was going too.
Maya looked up. He was closer than she expected, and his smirk made her heart skip.
Maya: Uh… yeah.
Before Malachi could say more, Jason stepped forward.
Jason: Are you okay? Didn’t mean to scare you.
He had that calm, grounding presence that made her feel safer instantly.
Maya: I… yeah. I’m fine. Thank you.
Malachi chuckled, clearly amused, and walked ahead. Jason lingered slightly, making sure she was okay.
Emma ran up to her, oblivious.
Emma: You two met! Finally!
Maya shook her head. We just… bumped.
But as she watched them, she realized—this spring break might be more complicated than she thought.
🌅 Tension Builds
Over the next two days, Maya tried to stick to her “quiet vacation” plan. She read by the beach, walked the pier, and tried not to interact with Malachi or Jason. But fate had other plans.
Malachi seemed to appear wherever she was. A chance encounter at the boardwalk arcade. A shared line at the ice cream shop. A playful tease when she tried to win a stuffed animal at one of the games.
Jason, on the other hand, always seemed to be nearby when she needed calm or guidance. Helping her pick the right seashells, giving her advice about navigating the tricky boardwalk crowds, and even laughing softly when Malachi’s antics went too far.
Maya felt torn—Malachi brought excitement and unpredictability, Jason brought safety and warmth. Her carefully laid plans for a quiet spring break were quickly crumbling.
🌙 Cliffhanger
That evening, the three boys—Malachi, Jason, and a friend she hadn’t noticed—ended up at the same beach bonfire Emma had dragged her to.
Malachi flashed his signature smirk at her.
Malachi: Looks like the quiet girl finally came out tonight.
Jason’s eyes met hers across the fire. Are you okay?
Maya realized, for the first time, that this week wouldn’t be quiet, safe, or predictable.
She smiled nervously.
Not even close.
