Chapter 5
“Come in.” Mark said quietly.
I walked in and sat down on his bed. Mark was sitting at the small table which he called a desk to do his work. I looked at him.
“Did you get any grief?” I asked Mark.
“He wasn’t home. But I made Alicia 2 hot dogs then did the dishes.” Mark replied.
“I had hoped you made her dinner. Hey I had the strangest night.” I tell Mark.
“Really? What happened?” Mark asked.
Mark leaned closer and listened.
“I went through the park and then I ended up getting lost a little, and then after shopping there was some guys slowly following me. I ended up climbing a few fences from the neighbours to get home. I didn’t feel safe at all.” I told Mark.
“Well, maybe they think you are beautiful and they just wanted to ask for your number?” Mark joked.
“Ha ha yeah I bet.” I joked back.
“How’s the bruises?” Mark asked.
“Not as bad as they were this morning.” I lied to Mark.
It hurt like f**k trying to climb fences with groceries.
“Alicia doesn’t know what happened. But we can’t keep dad’s behaviour from her forever. She asked me if she could give dad a hug and a kiss. But she always asks to do that.” Mark told me.
“I know, I will try my best to get a job as soon as possible.” I tell Mark.
I stood up and walked to the window. When I looked out of the window I saw the shadow of the men near the other house that’s yard I hid in. But in the night it looked like they were looking at this house. I was afraid if I looked away that they might disappear. So I gestured to Mark by clicking my fingers and gesturing my hand behind me to “come here” and surprisingly he got the hint. Mark approached and came up to the window beside me.
“Look quickly. That’s the men.” I said as quietly as possible.
Mark looked really quickly and saw them then looked at me.
“They are the ones that followed you?” Mark asked.
“Yes.” I said while looking back at Mark.
We both looked back but only one men was there now. I gasped as I saw that.
“Where did the others go?” I asked Mark.
“Calm down Kiara, they probably are trying to just scare you.” Mark tried to comfort me.
“It looks like he is looking at us.” I whispered.
“Well, lets solve that by closing the curtain.” Said Mark.
Mark closed the curtains and then hugged me.
“Go to bed Kiara, lock your door. Tomorrow you have to go to the doctors.” Said Mark.
“Ok Mark, goodnight. I Love you.” I tell Mark.
I give Mark a hug.
“Goodnight Kiara, I Love you too.” Mark tells me as he hugs me back.
I walk out of Mark’s room and towards mine. I hear the front door jiggling so I hurry and lock my bedroom door. I quickly change my clothes then lay down. I don’t want to show I am awake so I pretend to be asleep. But when I awoke the next day, I was in for a shock. I went into town to look for work. Mark got Alicia ready for school and walked her. He let me leave early so I could get a jump on today. I wore a button up black shirt and long black pants. I “borrowed” them from my mothers cupboard. I had put on my black high heels that I bought for a friends party ages ago. But I don’t talk to them anymore. I applied at the local businesses in town. One stood out in particular that I hadn’t tried yet. Although it is just a local diner. I walked in with my head up.
“Excuse me, can I please speak to the manager or owner?” I asked while trying to sound confident.
“One second please while I get him.” Said the girl.
I looked around me at the place, It had a ocean theme with a yellow floor but blue and yellow walls. Yellow was at the bottom of the walls and then dark blue. Fish were painted in the dark blue and then a light blue was painted at the top with the roof having this foam fluff like it was from a pillow stuck to the top. I looked in admiration. The fluff looked stapled but had this net across the top as well. I saw these bulbs lit up in it to make the clouds look better. It really stood out. I smiled looking at it.
“May I help you?” said the man.
I was startled for a second.
“Oh um good morning sir, my name is Kiara and I am looking for a job.” I tried to say confidently.
“Good morning to you Kiara. But I think you are a little young.” Said the man.
“Please can we at least talk about it? I am willing to clean toilets. I need to find a job.” I begged.
The man looked around.
“Sit down Kiara and I will be with you soon.” Said the man.
I obeyed and sat down in a booth waiting for the man to approach me. A few minutes go by and I have noticed the man starting to approach with a couple folders and pens. But then I saw him stop and answer his phone. The men put down the folder and walked out back. Time goes by but I keep my posture and try to remain looking like a young woman. The man comes out with the phone in his hand still on the call but places a beverage down and a straw.
“Kiara, here you can drink this. Sorry for taking a while but I will be back soon. Lunch will be on me. So please look over the menu and then tell that nice lady what you would like okay.” Said the man.
“Thank you sir. And take your time. I understand you are busy.” I said politely.
The man nodded and walked away while talking. I sat patiently then after another 10 minutes I started to look at the menu out of sheer curiosity. The one that stood out the most was the burger that they called the sweet chicken. It had pineapple, bacon, crispy chicken, cheese, lettuce, tomato, capsicum, onion and there was a side of chips and salad. It looked delicious. Some of the names on here are really funny though. You can tell it is a family restaurant. There is one called the ranger burger, the burger burger. The burger burger is literally two burgers combined like a tower. There is a bower which is a bacon burger tower. The menu of burgers is really long. There are so many puns in the menu like the juice category has got “Orange you glad I am delicious.” At the top of it. And written at the bottom it says “Now what’s more appleing than that.” Which made myself laugh a little. I closed the menu and placed it down. This mom just left with these two little kids that left their rubbish on the table so I quickly threw it in the trash and placed the tray on the counter then sat down again waiting. Time went on and the man came back out to join me.
