Chapter 6
So the man sat down and looked at me.
“Why have you not ordered anything?” Asked the man
“Because I don’t wish to put you out or trouble you.” I replied honestly.
“Look I am going to be honest with you, Kiara you are young. I could get in trouble for having you in here. Truancy will fine me. Why not leave your parents to earn the income and you go back to school?” Asked the man.
“Sir my mom left and took my youngest brother with her, my father drinks and I act like a mother to my little sister Alicia and my brother Mark. I can’t go to school because my living situation is not ideal with the drunk father, and while my brother is at school I need to work to earn income for food. Even as we speak I am wearing my moms shirt and pants. I need a job, even if it is the smallest pay. I just need enough to get by.” I explain.
“If your living situation is bad, why not report it?” He asked me.
“Because there will separate us. I haven’t gone through what I have been through, to lose all of my family. So please at least give me a chance.” I beg him again.
“Before I answer, I want to know more.” Said the man.
“More about what?” I asked him.
“Well, why did you look here for a job?” He asked.
“This place called out to me, it made me feel invited. And then I saw it was beautiful with the ocean theme and then when I looked up I was mesmerised. I felt like maybe you would be open to giving me a chance. But I need to make something of myself and support my siblings. I need to earn an income to be able to move to a camping ground and live in a tent with them. I need a job so I can be able to help my brother get good grades for a job. So I would really appreciate any job. Please.” I replied.
“Hold on a minute.” Said the man.
I looked on as the man went outside the store to a group of guys outside in the carpark getting out of cars. He stood there for a goods while and pointed at a few of them as if having an argument. As I watched on I noticed one of them had tried looking this way quite a bit. Minutes have gone by and then the man started walking back and went into the kitchen. The man came back with another folder and placed on the table. The man walked up to the counter and spoke a bit loudly.
“Make sure that they pay for their food, but they can have one free drink then pay for their next. Otherwise I will be losing money. Tell Tony that these are orders and that I will speak to him shortly.” Said the man.
“Yes sir.” The lady responded.
“Is the young ladies meal ready?” Asked the man.
“What meal sir?” Asked the lady confused.
“Kiara the young lady in the corner, I told her to order something and it would be free.” Said the man.
“Sir we don’t have any in store orders at the moment. The only orders are from online or over the phone sir.” Replied the lady.
The man looked at me.
“Come over to the table soon to take her order.” Said the man.
Oh great now I am going to feel obligated to. The man walked towards me again and sat down.
“Kiara, why didn’t you order some food?” asked the man.
“Sir I don’t want to waste your time. If you don’t want to hire me then I won’t stay longer than I should. I won’t put you out.” I explained.
“Kiara, I asked you to order because you did come in on a busy day. So if you had ordered you could eat while I was busy. Now please when Rebecca comes over, please order something so you can eat while I am busy. I will be busy in a little bit as I have to have a quick meeting in the back. So please order then it can cook while we chat so you can eat while I have my meeting. I am catering in a few days and I need the menu.” Said the man.
“I don’t feel comfortable with that sir.” Said Kiara.
“Please just do it, as a gift of apology for holding you up.” Said the man.
The lady came over then and I assumed her name was Rebecca because he said it before.
“Hello miss, I am Becky and I will be taking your order today. Now what would you like?” Said Rebecca.
“Rebecca this is Kiara, she will be allowed to order anything for free. And if she would like more than one, then she can have it.” Said the man.
“Yes sir.” Answered Becky.
“I will see what is taking Tony long. One moment Kiara.” Said the man.
“Are you his daughter?” Asked Rebecca.
“No, I am just trying to find some work.” I replied.
Why was she looking me up and down with distaste?
“Well why look here?” said Rebecca.
“Because no where will hire me. Can I please just have a chicken sandwich?” I asked her.
I hoped she would leave but I was mistaken. She sat down at the table.
“Look can you leave. I don’t need competition.” She said bluntly.
“I don’t understand. I literally just want to find a job so I can buy food for my family.” I answered her.
“No you don’t. I saw you staring at him across the street!” She exclaimed.
Alright she is annoying me.
“Look don’t accuse me of s**t. I am trying to find a job. If you want to jump on the guy then don’t be coy and tell him. Leave me the f**k out of it.” I answer.
I stood up and went to the door before she called out to me.
“We don’t want street trash in here. If I see you here again I will call the police.” She said.
“Well they let one in, she tried to take my order.” I replied as I walked out.
I walked down the street in a fast pace and was stopped with a hand on my shoulder.
