Give title to this anecdote
I general take straight flights. More so, if flight duration is of 4 hours i.e. between Delhi to Bangkok. But travel agent somehow convinced me to purchase a ticket of Bangladesh Airline with a lure of a one-night free stay in five-star hotels at Dhaka and providing me with a silly opportunity to have a look at another city in between travel. You often take such offers, if you have time with you and I had at that time. I arrived in the evening at Dhaka and all I could see, a big block of cycle Rickshaws chugging slowly, clogging the roads, in a lot of mist on my way to the Hotel. After getting some rest and bath in the hotel room, there was hardly any time to move around in the city and above all the hotel staff advised against moving out as the place is not safe for a lone traveler. All the charm and purpose got drained.
Got an early morning call to get up. Such passengers get hounded in Odd hour flights which no sane person will take. At 5.30 A.M I was reporting for check-in at the Airport. Took a seat in a hardly cushioned chair. After every 30 minutes, I got informed that the flight is late by another half an hour. At 9.30 A.M the D-Day came and boarding started. I was highly annoyed with myself recalling how I could have utilized the lost hours in more than 20 profitable ways.
Finally, the plane took –off on 2hour 25 minutes journey to Bangkok. My seat was near to the door. After approximately half an hour when the plane settled at stating height. A group of Five men and five burqa-clad women arrived at the door and started looking around and discussing among themselves. The bell captain spotted them and came rushing asking them” what are you doing here?’ they sought his help to know the plane is going in which direction so they can decide the Westside. He shouted “for what, why do you want to know the direction of the plane” they replied that these are Ramadan days and the apt time for Namaz is approaching and they wanted to render Namaz towards Makka- Madina. Above all, they wanted to jointly perform at small open space in front of Door.
The bell captain got shock of his life. ‘How can you even think of it? You are above 20,000 ft this time, any imbalance can jeopardize the life of all passengers, I can’t allow this on the plane. Just go back to your seats” he requested. But the counter-argument came “Don’t you know the importance of this particular Namaz in Ramadan. Captain asserted” I am also a Muslim, I Know, but I also know that safety of passengers is my first duty including you” but his assertion went nowhere. Had no impact upon the group. The argument and counter-arguments started flinging with more shrill tone. Many times, the bell captain looked at me to seek my help in his favor as I was the nearest to him. I had to stand up with a new argument. I address the Group” I don’t know you may be right by a religious point of view but another fact is that once you have boarded the plane you will have to abide by bell captain and pilot for your own safety and for all. “You don’t appear to be a Muslim so don’t try to preach us” this yelling came upon me. Slowly, rest of the passengers also became participants in the arguments. Some sitting on their seats started supporting the Group of Namazies and those opposing their act were opposing by keeping silent. Airhostess started trying the women on their seats and Namazi women started pushing them back. Some of the Namazi men tried to grab the neck of Bell captain as if he is the person causing danger to their Islam. The language of verbal exchange was getting bad to worse. I was being a Kafir was also a target of the abuses.
The situation was on the verge of going out of hand then all of a sudden the plane faced an air pocket jerk. The announcement came to be on the seats and fasten-up the seat belt. Having no other choice the group grudgingly went back to their seats. Luckily the bad weather continued for quite a long time and passengers had to be seated with belts on. The fixed time of Namaz fizzed out within this bad weather. The only time left was for refreshment, which crew started serving with more speed and alacrity. It is easy to recall this horrific display of this religious fervor at the height of over 25,000 ft. A marginal slip
Might have been of final disaster. Another astonishing fact, I came to know later on while talking to Airline people. They never faced Air pocket disturbance on this route ever before? It was a strange godly intervention.
But where would you like to classify the act of these 5 men and women? Is it a religious practice or fanaticism? Wearing Islam on their sleeves and unfold before others, irrespective of any situation to show that they can do anything logical or illogical in the name of religion. They are different from the rest of humanity. They are first Muslims then Human. Please choose the aptest caption to this anecdote.
