CHAPTER 1 – The First Meeting
Emma Carter looked out of the bus window as the city slowly came into view. Tall buildings, busy roads, and bright signs filled her eyes. Everything looked different from the small town she had grown up in. Her heart beat fast. This was the first time she had ever lived in a big city. Emma held her small bag close to her chest. Inside it were a few clothes, her phone, and the little notebook where she wrote her thoughts. It was not much, but it was enough for her new beginning. Her older sister Sarah had told her to come stay with her for a while. “You need a fresh start,” Sarah had said on the phone a week ago. “Come to the city. You can stay with me until you figure things out.” Emma had not needed much convincing. Life in her town had become boring and lonely. Most of her friends had already moved away, and she wanted something more. Something exciting. Now she was finally here. The bus stopped with a loud hiss. Emma stepped down and looked around. Cars moved quickly along the road. People walked past her without even noticing her. She felt small in the middle of it all. Then her phone rang. “Emma!” Sarah’s voice came through the phone. “Where are you?” “I just got off the bus,” Emma said, turning slowly as she spoke. “I see you.” Emma looked up. Across the road, Sarah waved with a big smile on her face. Emma felt relief rush through her. She quickly walked across the street and wrapped her arms around her sister. Sarah smelled like expensive perfume and city life. “You made it,” Sarah said happily. Emma laughed softly. “Of course I did.” Sarah stepped back and looked at her carefully. “You look the same,” she said. “And you look different,” Emma replied. Sarah’s hair was longer now, and she wore stylish clothes Emma had never seen before. She looked confident, like someone who truly belonged in the city. “Well,” Sarah said with a small laugh, “city life changes people.” She grabbed Emma’s bag. “Come on. Let’s go home.” The apartment was on the fifth floor of a tall building. Emma followed Sarah up the stairs because the elevator was broken. By the time they reached the door, Emma was slightly out of breath. Sarah unlocked the door and pushed it open. “Welcome to your new home,” she said. Emma stepped inside slowly. The apartment was not huge, but it was beautiful. There was a small living room with a soft gray couch, a television on the wall, and a glass table in the middle. The kitchen was clean and modern. Everything looked simple but comfortable. Emma smiled. “It’s really nice,” she said honestly. Sarah dropped Emma’s bag on the couch. “You can use the guest room,” she said. “It’s small, but it should be fine.” Emma nodded. “Thank you for letting me stay here.” Sarah waved her hand. “Don’t be silly. You’re my sister.” Emma walked to the window and looked down at the city streets far below. Cars moved like tiny toys. People rushed everywhere. The city felt alive. “So,” Sarah said, leaning against the kitchen counter, “what do you think?” Emma smiled softly. “I think I like it here.” The next few days passed quickly. Sarah was very busy with work. Every morning she left early, and most nights she returned late. Emma spent most of her time alone in the apartment. She explored the neighborhood a little, visited a small café nearby, and sometimes watched movies in the living room. But mostly she waited for Sarah to come home so they could talk. One evening, Emma was sitting on the couch reading her notebook when she heard the door unlock. She looked up. Sarah walked in, looking tired but excited. “Emma,” she said quickly, kicking off her shoes. “Yes?” “I’m bringing someone over tonight.” Emma closed her notebook. “Oh?” Sarah smiled. “My boyfriend.” Emma raised her eyebrows slightly. “You never told me you had a boyfriend.” Sarah laughed. “That’s because we haven’t been dating for very long.” “What’s his name?” Emma asked. “Jason.” Emma nodded slowly. “Okay.” Sarah walked towards the kitchen. “He should be here soon.” Emma suddenly felt nervous for no clear reason. Maybe it was because she had not met many people since arriving in the city. Or maybe it was simply because she wanted to make a good impression. About twenty minutes later, there was a knock on the door. Sarah quickly walked over and opened it. Emma could not see the person outside at first. Then Sarah stepped aside. And Emma saw him. Jason Miller walked into the apartment. He was tall, with dark hair and calm eyes. He wore a simple black shirt and jeans, but somehow he looked confident without even trying. For a moment, Emma forgot to breathe. Jason’s eyes moved across the room. Then they stopped on her. There was a small pause. Just a few seconds. But Emma felt it clearly. Sarah walked over and placed her hand on Jason’s arm. “Jason, this is my younger sister, Emma.” Jason stepped forward. “Nice to meet you,” he said. His voice was deep but relaxed. Emma stood up quickly. “Nice to meet you too.” They shook hands. The moment their hands touched, Emma felt a strange warmth move through her chest. It surprised her. She quickly pulled her hand back. Jason noticed the small reaction but said nothing. Instead, he smiled politely. “So you’re the famous sister I’ve heard about,” he said. Emma blinked. “Famous?” Sarah laughed. “I told him you were finally coming to the city.” Emma smiled shyly. “Well… I just got here a few days ago.” Jason nodded. “How do you like it so far?” “It’s exciting,” Emma admitted. “But also a little scary.” Jason chuckled. “That’s normal. The city takes time to get used to.” Sarah clapped her hands suddenly. “Okay, enough talking. Let’s eat.” They sat around the small dining table. Sarah had ordered food from a restaurant nearby. While they ate, the conversation stayed light. Sarah talked about work. Jason shared a few funny stories about the city. Emma listened and laughed along with them. But sometimes she caught Jason looking at her. Not in a rude way. Just quietly. As if he was curious. Every time she noticed, her heart beat faster. She did not understand why. After dinner, Sarah went into the kitchen to answer a phone call from work. Emma and Jason were suddenly alone in the living room. The room became quiet. Emma sat on the couch while Jason stood near the window. For a moment neither of them spoke. Then Jason turned slightly. “So,” he said, “what brought you to the city?” Emma looked down at her hands. “I wanted something new,” she said honestly. Jason nodded slowly. “That’s a good reason.” Emma looked up at him. “And you?” she asked. “Have you always lived here?” “Most of my life.” “Do you like it?” Jason thought for a moment. “Sometimes.” Emma tilted her head slightly. “Sometimes?” Jason gave a small smile. “The city can be exciting. But it can also be lonely.” Emma understood that feeling. She looked out the window. The lights of the city shone brightly in the dark. “It already feels different from home,” she said quietly. Jason watched her for a moment. “You’ll get used to it,” he said. Their eyes met again. For a second, the air between them felt strange. Not uncomfortable. Just… different. Then Sarah walked back into the room. “Sorry about that,” she said. “Work never stops.” Jason laughed. “I believe you.” Sarah sat beside him on the couch and leaned against his shoulder. Emma suddenly felt something twist in her chest. She quickly looked away. Jason noticed. But again, he said nothing. Later that night, Jason stood near the door preparing to leave. “It was nice meeting you, Emma,” he said. Emma nodded. “You too.” Sarah hugged him. “Drive safe.” Jason opened the door, then paused. He looked back once more. His eyes met Emma’s again. For a brief moment, something passed between them. Something quiet. Something unspoken. Then he left. The door closed. Emma stood still in the living room. Sarah stretched and yawned. “I’m exhausted,” she said. “I’m going to bed.” Emma nodded slowly. “Goodnight.” Sarah disappeared down the hallway. Emma remained where she was. Her mind kept replaying the evening. Jason’s voice. Jason’s smile. Jason’s eyes. She shook her head slightly. “This is silly,” she whispered to herself. Jason was her sister’s boyfriend. There was nothing more to think about. Still… That night, as Emma lay in bed staring at the ceiling, one thought refused to leave her mind. Meeting Jason had changed something. And she had a strange feeling that this was only the beginning.
