Tonya I woke to the beeping of a machine and the soft breath pressing against my head. Pain rippled through my body when I tried to move. It was dull along my ribs, but sharp across my shoulder. A bruise below my eyes stung, and the memories hit like cold water. Angie’s lie. The way Zeke assaulted me brutally. It was too much to bear. Zeke had turned into a monster for reason unknown to me. A whimper that slipped out, small and broken, and I let my tears slide into the pillow. Someone shifted beside me. I turned my head to see Ezra had jerked awake, his golden eyes flashing before they softened. “Hey,” he rasped, already leaning over me. His arms gathered me carefully, like I might break if he breathed too hard. He comforted me again as if he was wanted to sear those words in my brain
