CHAPTER SIX

We started to walk to class and it didn’t take long. I found a seat and of course Zane followed me and sat next to me. We still had awhile before class started so we started talking. He rested his chin on his hand and looked over at me. “So how have your other classes been? You liking it here so far?” I took a moment to choose the right words. “Um they’ve been interesting to say the least, my teachers seem nice so far. What about you? How are have your classes been?” With a smile he says. “They’ve all been very uneventful until now that is.” I blush and look away. What is with the guys at this school? I start to take out everything I need for the class as the teacher makes their way to the front to address the class. We don’t talk much more after that as the teacher starts giving a lecture of what will be expected of us in this class. Before I know it class is over. As I put my things away Zane asks me what I’m doing after class. “I promised to meet a new friend for some coffee, and then I have to go over a project with my partner for English.” He follows me out and asks. “Mind if I come? I could use a pick me up.” “Sure I don’t see why not.” We make our way over to the coffee shop and I spot Liza at the back of the line. She smiles and waves me over. “Hi Liza, hope you didn’t wait to long. Hope you don’t mind but my friend wanted to tag along and grab something.” She smiled. “Oh no I just got here, so you know Zane too?” Shocked I looked back at Zane. “So this is one of the friends you were telling me about?” He laughs. “Not exactly but we do know each other.” Ok why did this suddenly feel so awkward? I wanted to ask how they knew each other but somehow I felt like that’d make it more awkward. So instead I asked Liza how the rest of her classes went. “ They went well, luckily I don’t have any homework yet.” It was our turn to order. “I’ll take a strawberry smoothie please.” Liza ordered a passion fruit green tea and Zane ordered a black coffee. We paid and found a table to sit at. Zane took his leave and waved us goodbye. “See you later little Star.” He smirked as he walked away. “Little Star?” Liza asked me. “Yeah I don’t know why he calls me that” I blushed. “Sooo how do you two know each other? Kinda feel like there’s history there?” She put her drink down and said. “Well I used to live here so we went to school together, but then my family moved away. I didn’t expect to run into him here of all places.” I didn’t want to push her after all we just met and it’s really none of my business anyway so I went with the safer question. “Why were you surprised to see him here? Guessing you guys didn’t keep in touch?” I took a drink from my smoothie it was pretty good. “Well he just never really seemed all that interested in school is all. Anyway enough about him, tell me about you.” So I told her about how I didn’t really know anyone here and how I was thinking about majoring in graphic design. She told me she didn’t really know anyone here either and that she was interested in majoring in psychology. We talked for awhile and it was nice to finally have what felt like a normal conversation. Everyone I met so far has been weirdly intense. After we had both finished our drinks I said “Well I suppose I better text my partner from English that I’m done with classes now.” I opened up my phone and texted Warren. “Hey I’m done with my classes now if you’re free”. I didn’t have to wait long before I got a response. “I’m free now want to meet at the library?” I responded “Sure sounds good meet you there in 15.” “Well I guess I’ll see you tomorrow I’ve gotta head to the library and work on this project.” We waved goodbye to each other and I made my way to the library. I looked around and didn’t see Warren anywhere so I texted him. “Hey I’m at the library are you here yet?” I looked at the screen and saw those three little dots that meant he was responding. “Yeah I’m at a table upstairs near the windows.” So I made my way upstairs and saw him sitting at one of the tables with a laptop. I made my way over and pulled out a chair across from him. He looked up at me and smiled. “Hey beautiful.” My face is going to turn permanently red at this point. “Hello.” I looked out the window and noticed the view of the mountains was beautiful from here. “This school really has some beautiful scenery. You can’t see the mountains really where I’m from.” He looked at me. “So you’re not from around here then.” It was more of a statement than a question. “No I grew up about 40 minutes from here. What about you?” “No I’m from the other side of the mountains.” “Oh so you traveled pretty far to get here then.” “It was faster than you’d expect.” He started typing on his computer when he asked me. “So have you given any thought about which book you want to choose?” I told him I’d already read “There Eyes Were Watching God” and that I’d enjoyed it. “Alright that sounds good to me.” He continued typing on his computer and I looked out the window again. I saw Darren standing outside looking up at the window at me. He held my gaze for awhile before disappearing into the crowd and walked away. I turned my attention back to the task at hand. “So have you read the book?” I asked “No.” He said “But I have seen the movie. I can just pick up the book when we’re done here and look over it later.” He put his computer away and asked me. “So who’s that guy you were staring at earlier?” I was confused for a second and realized he must’ve meant Darren. “Oh Darren? He’s just some weird guy from my computer science class.” He smiled seem satisfied by my answer and said “Let me walk you back to your dorm.”
