The Truth Behind My Adoption
ELISE'S POV
“You fool!!”
“Why do you think we adopted you? Why do you think we took a worthless omega like you in?” Alpha Pascal's voice thundered to me, his tone laced with clear irritation.
“You think I took you in out of kindness? You piece of trash? It's clearly for this purpose,” he continued and I felt my chest tighten with utter shock.
“Who would be insane enough to give his real daughter to that brutal beast? I'm not insane. I took you in for this reason, Elise,” he continued, and I my breath hitched that very moment as the reality behind his words began to settle heavily inside me.
At least, I have gotten used to the inhumane and degrading treatment and immense suffering I faced everyday from him but why this?! Why this?! Me? To that merciless and savage beast?
“Get yourself ready for tomorrow's engagement. Do not bring disgrace to our pack,” Aria, my stepmother, said coldly to me. I felt my body go rigid instantly, my mind still struggling to process everything unfolding before me. There, I sat frozen, my spoon halfway lifted, while my heart began to pound harder and harder like it was trying to burst out.
That morning, I woke up with extreme excitement I hadn't felt for a long time and I even smiled to myself as I whispered, “Happy Blissful birthday,” because today I turned eighteen. And It wasn’t just a birthday to me, it was the day I would finally receive my wolf from the Moon Goddess, the moment I had been waiting for since I was a child. For once, I allowed myself to believe that something good might actually happen in my life.
Since my father’s execution, life has been nothing but utter hell. My father had once been a respected Alpha of the Icefur pack, but after being accused of treason, he was sentenced to death. Alpha Pascal, the one who succeeded the throne took me in, and at first I thought it was kindness, but I quickly learned that kindness here came with chains.
I got up from my bed and made it neatly before going to the bathroom. I couldn't cease smiling under the shower as the water streamed down my skin. Why wouldn't I smile when Roland had told me he had prepared a present for me on my birthday.
In this house, Roland was the only light in my dark world of suffering and degrading treatment since I've been living with Alpha Pascal. He's the only person who gave me a glimmer of hope that everything would become better by time because they never regard me as part of the family. There's no difference between me and the maids in the pack house.
Roland is the only one who treated me like a human being and not a slave. I thought Alpha Pascal took me into his home out of generosity that I was innocent of my father's crime but everything became clear to me when I stepped foot into the house.
I was forced to live in a bunker where rats and insects were my companions. I'm not even allowed to eat freshly cooked food but leftovers. I'm not allowed to use their plates. Sometimes, I'm even forced to share plates with Jago, the family's dog.
But Roland is very different from them all. He's the one who would sneak into my room and give me fresh food when everyone is not around. He's the only one who would not hit me nor spat at me.
“I’LL SURELY MAKE YOU MY LUNA AFTER SUCCEEDING MY FATHER'S THRONE. THEN, NOBODY WILL NOT DARE HURT YOU.”
This is one of the numerous promises he made to me when he confessed his love to me. Before he even wooed me, I'd already developed feelings for him. He's the only light in my dark world of immense suffering and maltreatment, and the reason I am enduring the hardships and torture from Alpha Pascal and his family.
I wore the only decent dress I owned, a green floral gown Roland had bought for my birthday last year, and I tied my long black hair back tightly before heading to serve the family breakfast at the dining room.
This has been my everyday activity to serve the family food irrespective of the specialty of the day since the last eight years I got here. It does not matter whether today is my birthday or not, I have to serve them.
But when I walked into the dining room, shock coursed through me as everything looked different. The table was fully set, food already served, and everyone was seated.
Alpha Pascal stood up with a smile I had never seen before and walked toward me, saying, “Birthday girl, the one we’ve been waiting for is here,” before kissing my forehead, and my entire body froze in shock.
I couldn't believe my eyes. I couldn’t understand what was happening because in all my years here, I had never received even the smallest kindness from him. So, what is it with this sudden kindness?
Aria gestured toward the table and said, “Elise, come on, join us, we specially prepared this for you,” but instead of comfort, I felt a deep unease rising in my chest. I began to feel suspicious of them. For the past eight years I've gotten here, I've never been provided anything on my birthday. Not even a cupcake. So, why are they doing this all of a sudden? Or, are they trying to poison me?
My eyes immediately searched for Roland who is also seated at the dining table, hoping to get answers from him. But when our eyes met, he was looking guilty and remorseful. At once, he quickly looked away from me, and that alone made my heart sink. Why is he looking guilty?
“You can have your seat here, my pretty Elise,” Alpha Pascal said to me as he gestured to the other side of the dining table, facing the whole family.
“Happy birthday, My Elise,” Rhea, Alpha Pascal's daughter, greeted me but I couldn't help but notice the sneer in her face as she raised her eyebrows. f**k, her facial appearance is telling me she has knowledge of something I don't know. Curiosity is killing me.
What the hell is going on here?! I have this crazy urge to ask whatever they're doing or planning.
“What exactly is going on?” I eventually managed to ask, my brows knitted together.
“Elise, cheer up, today is your birthday. We have actually prepared this specially for you. And also, today isn't any kind of day for you. Aside from the fact that today is your birthday, you are receiving your wolf today,” Aria claimed.
“Well, I haven't been extended with this kind of approach since I've come here. So, I'm sorry if I find it difficult to believe everything here,” I said.
Suddenly, Alpha Pascal's laughter tore through the room before sipping the tea before him.
“Good, good, good,” Alpha Pascal said, clapping his hands together and throwing an evil grin he used to pass to me since I got to his house. “You're actually smart to deduce quickly that this is more than your birthday or you receiving your wolf,” he continued.
“We didn't do this because of your birthday or because you're receiving your wolf today but because it's time for you to repay us all the kindness we showered you since you betrayed our pack.”
What? BETRAYED?!
“Um-mm, I don't get you, what do you mean?” I asked, confusion clawing at me.
“I'm very sure you must have heard about the treaty with the Lycan king and other packs in this region?” he started.
What?! The Lycan King? He was not only a ruler of all the packs around but a devil in wolf skin. His name alone breathed terror in the heart of other Alphas. Rumors carried it that his brutality knew no limit.
And honestly, I'm aware of the treaty in which all other Alphas agreed to send their eldest daughters to the Lycan king as his concubines to stop them from betraying him.
“Yes-ssss, I'm aware,” I stuttered, my mind already suspecting where he's heading to but hoping I was wrong.
“Good,” he muttered, bobbing his head. “ Then you should be excited to represent our pack to honor the treaty that our pack signed in….”
“But the treaty agreement explicitly provided that you should send your oldest daughter,” I interrupted him. I don't want to believe what my mind was screaming at me.
“You fool!!” Before I knew what was happening, Alpha Pascal's voice bellowed at me, his face twisted in fury.
And this was how Alpha Pascal sealed my fate with the savage Lycan king. My heart shattered in pieces. I have always been baffled by the reason why Alpha Pascal adopted me because he and my father were not on good terms when he was alive. Now, everything has come to picture. I shifted my gaze back to Roland, hoping to get some words to this, only for him to look away.
I was engulfed by the silence that overwhelmed the room after Alpha Pascal's words. What would now happen to me and Pascal? Did that mean we are going to break up? Or what? How would I be married off to that savage?
My head started clashing with different questions. I couldn't say anything. I was totally dumbstruck by what I heard.
Everybody left the dining room, leaving only me and Roland. A good chance for me to speak with him about this shocking situation of mine.
Roland was about to leave too when I confronted him. “Roland, what do you say about this?” I asked desperately, my voice breaking as I continued, “I think we should run away. Since you love me and I love you, that’s enough reason for us to leave.”
But Roland sighed heavily before replying, “You have to do what my dad said,” and in that instant, something inside me cracked painfully.
I stepped back in disbelief as I asked, “What do you mean?” and he replied, “My dad will have to send my sister to that monster if you run away, and I can’t allow that to happen. I can't allow my sister to be married off to him. ”
My chest tightened painfully as I understood his choice without him even needing to say it clearly. At that moment, I realized he wasn't going to choose me. “So, you prefer me to be married to that savage Lycan King than your sister, who is supposed to go, right?”
Roland took a step closer towards me, “Honestly, Elise I'm sorry I can't run away with you. I can't leave everything here just to be with you.”
I took a deep breath, trying to stop the hammering in my chest before I spoke out, “Okay. You are right. I'm sorry to have asked that in the first place.”
“Thanks for understanding. If the Lycan king rejects you, I'll get you back when I become the Alpha,” Roland said before he pecked me and strode out of the room.
Before I could process anything further, a mocking voice smirked behind me.
“How bold of you to ask my brother to betray his family and snitch his duties as the future Alpha of our great Icefur pack,” Rhea smirked.
“That's none of your business. I love Roland and he loves me too.”
“Really? Wow. Did he tell you where he's heading to now?” Rhea asked me, a sarcastic smile etching on her face.
“He didn't tell me where's going. But I trust my Roland.”
“Wow. You think so?” Rhea's smirk deepened as she moved towards me, handing me a paper. “This is Alessa’s address.”
“Alessa?” My brows knitted together in confusion. “Who the hell is Alessa?” I asked her, anger clear in my voice.
“She is actually Roland’s fiancée and the future Luna of the pack.”
My mind went completely blank at those words, but I still forced myself to say, “That’s a lie… I trust him. He'd said he wouldn't choose any Luna except me.”
“Fine, I think you should visit them. The address is now in your hand.”
“I don't need to visit anybody!!” I declared, my anger flaring higher. “I trust my boyfriend.”
Rhea let out a mocking laughter, a contrast to the hell gnawing in my mind I don't want to believe. “What a complete joke. Do you think my brother would stand before the pack with a lowly maid like you beside her? Anyways, I'm telling you this as a payment for your sacrifice since you're going to replace me as the Lycan king's concubine,” she muttered before leaving in the dining room.
I returned my gaze at the invitation letter that contained the so-called Alessa's address in my hand. “Roland? No. He can't do this. We deeply love each other.”
