Chapter 1
As the last rays of sunlight faded from the attic's grimy windows, Emmanuel's mind wrestled with the darkness that had consumed his life. The creaky wooden floorboards beneath him seemed to echo the despair that had become his constant companion. How did it come to this? One moment, he was a vibrant undergraduate, passionate about leading his peers as a union leader; the next, he was a shadow of his former self, trapped in this dingy attic, with no memory of how he got here. The only clues were the faint whispers in his mind, taunting him with snippets of a life he couldn't recall. 'You'll never escape...you'll never remember...' The voices haunted him, fueling the madness that had taken hold. And yet, deep within, a spark of defiance flickered, refusing to be extinguished. Politics had always fascinated Emmanuel, even as a young boy. He remembered spending hours listening to his grandfather's stories about the struggle for independence, the fiery passion in his eyes igniting a spark within Emmanuel's own heart. As he grew older, that spark grew into a flame, fueling his desire to make a difference in the world. He devoured books on political theory, attended debates, and joined discussions with a fervour that earned him both admiration and ridicule from his peers. His parents, though worried about the practicality of a career in politics, encouraged his passion, seeing in him a glimmer of the leadership that had long been absent in their community. At the university, Emmanuel's interest in politics only deepened. He joined the student union, quickly rising through the ranks to become a leading voice in the debates that shaped the campus. His charisma and conviction drew people to him, and soon he found himself at the forefront of a movement that sought to challenge the status quo. It was no surprise when he decided to run for union president, his campaign was built on a promise to bring about real change. But what happened next, no one could have foreseen... Politics, his grandfather would say, was not just about power, but about people. About their stories, their struggles, and their triumphs. Emmanuel's heart swelled with a desire to make a difference, to be a part of something greater than himself. He began to see the world through different eyes, to notice the injustices and the inequalities that had long been hidden in plain sight. And so, his journey began. A journey of discovery, growth, and transformation. From the hallowed halls of academia to the rough-and-tumble world of politics, Emmanuel's path was marked by an insatiable curiosity and a passion that would not be silenced. But little did he know, the road ahead would be fraught with challenges, and the very thing that drove him would also be the source of his greatest pain... Ah, politics... (sigh) ...I mean, what's the point, right? I used to think it was all about making a difference, but now... (pauses) ...I don't know, maybe I was just naive. I remember my grandfather's stories, the fire in his eyes... (trails off) ...and I wanted that, I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself. But the more I got involved, the more I realized it's all just a game. (bitter laugh) ...a game of power, of manipulation... (shakes head) ...I thought I could change it from the inside, but... (scoffs) ...no, I was just a pawn. They played me, used me for their own gain... (mutters under his breath) ...and now look at me, trapped in this attic, a madman... (chuckles darkly) ...yeah, that's me, a real leader... (sarcastic tone) ...leading the charge... (pauses, lost in thought) ...what was I thinking?... Ah, yes... UNILAG... (chuckles) ...those were the days. I was so passionate about politics, I even convinced my parents to let me take a semester off to intern at the National Assembly. (smirks) ...I was like a sponge, soaking up every bit of knowledge, every connection I could make. And then, of course, there was the Students' Union Government... (pauses, a faraway look in his eyes) ...I was determined to make a difference, to leave my mark. I ran for President, and... (smiles wryly) ...well, let's just say it was an education in itself. The caucus, the campaigning, the backroom deals... (shakes head) ...it was a wild ride. But I was young, idealistic... (laughs) ...I thought I could change the world. And then, of course, there was my candidacy... (pauses, a hint of regret in his voice) ...I thought I was doing the right thing, but... (trails off) ...it's all so clear now. The manipulation, the lies, the games... (sighs) ...I was just a pawn, a means to an end. But I played along, oh yes... (bitter laugh) ...I played along, thinking I could outsmart them, outmaneuver them... (shakes head) ...foolish, foolish, foolish... I remember the rallies, the debates, the posters plastered all over campus... (chuckles) ...my face was everywhere! (laughs) ...and the slogans, oh boy... 'Emmanuel for President', 'A New Dawn for UNILAG'... (smirks) ...it was all so catchy, so convincing. But behind the scenes... (pauses, a hint of disappointment) ...it was all about the connections, the power struggles... (shakes head) ...I was just a pawn in their game. I remember meeting with the likes of 'Dollar' Dairo, 'Pounds' Peters, and 'Euros' Egwu. (chuckles) ...they were the big boys on campus, the ones who ran the show. They'd throw money around like it was going out of style, buying votes, buying influence... (shakes head) ...it was sickening. But I played along, oh yes... (bitter laugh) ...I played along. I thought I could outsmart them, outmanoeuvre them... (shakes head) ...foolish, foolish, foolish. And then there was my running mate, 'Senator' Sola. (smirks) ...he was the brains behind the operation, the one who knew all the tricks. He'd whisper in my ear, telling me what to say, what to do... (pauses, a hint of regret) ...I thought he was my friend, but... (trails off) And the girls... (sighs) ...oh, the girls. They'd flock around me, flirting, batting their eyelashes... (chuckles) ...I was young, foolish... (shakes head) ...I thought it was all part of the package, the perks of being a 'big man' on campus. But it was all a facade, a charade. Behind the scenes... (pauses, a hint of disappointment) ...it was all about the Benjamins, the power struggles, the manipulation. I was just a pawn in their game, a means to an end.
