The New Girl
Amara Blake stood outside the tall iron gates of Blackwood Academy.
She stared at the enormous building beyond them.
The school looked more like a palace than a place for students.
Dark stone walls surrounded the campus. Large windows reflected the morning sunlight, and perfectly trimmed trees lined the long driveway.
Students walked through the gates wearing expensive uniforms.
Some arrived in luxury cars.
Others were surrounded by friends.
Amara tightened her grip around the strap of her bag.
She took a deep breath.
“This is just a school,” she whispered.
But she knew it wasn't.
Blackwood Academy was where the children of the richest and most powerful families studied.
And nobody knew who Amara Blake really was.
That was exactly how she wanted it.
She pulled her hair into a neat ponytail and walked through the gates.
The moment she entered the main courtyard, several students looked at her.
A girl whispered something to her friend.
Another student glanced at Amara before quickly looking away.
Amara ignored them.
She had learned a long time ago that attention was dangerous.
Especially when people started asking questions.
“New student?”
Amara turned.
A smiling girl stood beside her.
She had long brown hair and carried several books against her chest.
“Yes.”
“I'm Lily.”
“Amara.”
Lily smiled.
“You're lucky. I'm the first person you'll meet here.”
Amara smiled slightly.
“I guess I am.”
Lily looked around.
“Do you know where you're going?”
“Not really.”
“Come with me.”
They started walking toward the main building.
As they walked, Lily talked nonstop.
She explained which teachers were strict, which cafeteria meals were terrible, and which students were impossible to deal with.
Amara listened quietly.
Then Lily suddenly lowered her voice.
“And whatever you do, stay away from Ethan Carter.”
Amara looked at her.
“Who?”
Lily pointed toward the courtyard.
A group of students stood near the stairs.
In the middle was a tall boy wearing the Blackwood Academy uniform.
His dark hair was slightly messy, and several students were talking to him.
He looked confident.
Almost too confident.
“That is Ethan Carter,” Lily said.
“Why should I stay away from him?”
“Because he's trouble.”
Amara looked at Ethan again.
At that exact moment, he turned.
Their eyes met.
Amara immediately looked away.
But Ethan didn't.
He continued watching her.
“Why is he staring?” Amara asked.
Lily shrugged.
“Probably because you're new.”
“Then he'll get bored.”
Lily laughed.
“You'd be surprised.”
They entered the classroom.
Amara chose a seat near the window.
She liked sitting where she could see outside.
It made her feel less trapped.
A few minutes later, the teacher walked in.
“Good morning, everyone.”
The class became quiet.
The teacher looked at the list in her hand.
“We have a new student today.”
Everyone turned toward Amara.
She stood slowly.
“Introduce yourself.”
Amara swallowed.
“My name is Amara Blake. It's nice to meet you.”
She sat down.
The teacher smiled.
“Welcome to Blackwood Academy.”
Amara looked down at her notebook.
She didn't want anyone to know more than that.
Not her family.
Not her past.
Not the reason she had transferred.
Nothing.
The lesson began.
But Amara could feel someone looking at her.
She slowly glanced across the room.
Ethan Carter was sitting several seats away.
His eyes were on her.
Again.
This time, Amara frowned.
He smiled.
She immediately looked away.
After class, Lily walked over.
“You survived.”
Amara smiled.
“Barely.”
Lily laughed.
“Come on. I'll show you around.”
They left the classroom.
As they walked through the hallway, Amara noticed framed photographs covering the walls.
Graduation pictures.
School competitions.
Important events.
Then she stopped.
One photograph caught her attention.
It showed several powerful-looking adults standing together.
Amara's heart suddenly raced.
She knew one of the faces.
Her father.
She stepped closer.
Her fingers trembled.
“Amara?”
She didn't answer.
She stared at the photograph.
Her father was standing beside another man.
A man she had seen before.
A man whose name she had been warned never to mention.
Carter.
Amara quickly stepped away.
Lily looked confused.
“Are you okay?”
“Yes.”
“You look pale.”
“I'm fine.”
Amara forced a smile.
But she wasn't fine.
Her father had never told her about Blackwood Academy.
He had never mentioned the Carter family.
And he had certainly never told her why his photograph was hanging inside this school.
Amara looked back at the photograph.
Someone had tried to hide the truth from her.
She had promised herself she wouldn't go looking for it.
But now the truth had found her.
“Let's go,” she said.
Lily nodded.
They continued walking.
Neither of them noticed Ethan standing at the end of the hallway.
He had seen Amara looking at the photograph.
And he had noticed the fear in her eyes.
Ethan walked toward the picture.
He studied it carefully.
Then his expression changed.
There was something strange about the new girl.
He had seen that photograph many times.
But he had never seen anyone react to it like that.
His phone suddenly vibrated.
He pulled it from his pocket.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
Don't get close to the new girl.
Ethan frowned.
Another message arrived.
You have no idea who she really is.
He stared at the screen.
Then he looked down the hallway.
Amara was gone.
Ethan slowly put his phone away.
For the first time, he wasn't curious about the new student.
He was suspicious of her.
Meanwhile, Amara entered the girls' bathroom and locked herself inside a stall.
She took out an old photograph from her bag.
It was the only photograph she had of her father.
She looked at his face.
“Why were you there?”
Her voice broke.
She turned the photograph over.
There was a sentence written on the back.
If you ever see the Carter family again, run.
Amara's eyes widened.
She had carried that photograph for years.
But she had never understood those words.
Until today.
A sound suddenly came from outside the stall.
Amara froze.
Someone was standing there.
She quietly put the photograph back into her bag.
“Amara?”
It was Lily.
Amara released a breath.
“I'm here.”
“You've been gone for a while.”
“I'll be out soon.”
Footsteps moved away.
Amara opened the stall door.
She looked into the mirror.
For years, she had hidden behind a simple name.
A simple life.
A simple identity.
But coming to Blackwood Academy had already changed everything.
And she had a feeling this was only the beginning.
Outside the bathroom, Ethan stood alone in the hallway.
His phone vibrated again.
He checked the message.
If she discovers the truth, your family will lose everything.
Ethan's expression hardened.
He looked toward the classroom where Amara had disappeared.
“Who are you, Amara Blake?”
He had no idea that the answer would change both their lives.
To be continued......
