Chapter Four

The days that followed were filled with tension. Victoria tried to engage herself in her usual chores, but her mind was restless. Alexander's words echoed in her heart, presenting a dangerous temptation she struggled to resist. She couldn’t afford to let her guard down, especially when her family's safety and her fragile peace depended on it. At the Narváez estate, Alexander was at odds with his family. His defiance against their plans for him had only fueled their disapproval. His brother, Miguel, was particularly vocal, taking every opportunity to remind him of his responsibilities. “You’re acting like a fool, Alexander,” Miguel said one evening as they sat in the study. “This obsession with that girl will destroy everything we’ve built. Our family’s reputation is at stake.” Alexander glared at his brother, his temper barely in check. “I’m not obsessed, Miguel. I care about her, and I’m tired of living my life according to everyone else’s expectations.” “Care about her?” Miguel scoffed. “She’s a peasant, Alexander. She has nothing to offer you but scandal and disgrace. You need to let this go before it’s too late.” “I’d rather be with someone real than spend my life trapped in a loveless marriage,” Alexander shot back. “You can’t force me to live your way, Miguel.” Miguel’s expression darkened. “You think this is about love? This is about survival. Without our wealth and influence, you’d be nothing. And that girl will drag you down with her.” Alexander clenched his fists, his frustration mounting. “Maybe I don’t want to be part of this world anymore. Maybe I’m tired of all the lies and manipulations.” Miguel shook his head, his patience wearing thin. “You’re making a mistake, Alexander. And when you realize it, it’ll be too late.” Meanwhile, Elena quietly set her plans in motion. She had no intention of losing Alexander to someone like Victoria; her pride and ambition wouldn’t allow it. She started visiting the estate more often, using her charm to win over Alexander’s family. Miguel, in particular, appreciated her presence, viewing her as an important ally in guiding Alexander back onto the “right” path. “I understand how difficult this must be for you,” Elena said to Miguel one afternoon as they walked through the estate gardens. “Alexander has always been stubborn, but I believe he’ll come around eventually.” Miguel sighed, his shoulders tense. “I hope you’re right, Elena. He’s blinded by this girl, but I know you’re the one who can bring him back to his senses.” Elena smiled sweetly, but her mind was already racing with ideas. She knew she couldn’t rely solely on persuasion to eliminate Victoria from Alexander’s life. She needed to take action, decisive action. One evening, as Victoria was preparing dinner, her grandfather approached her with a worried expression. “Victoria,” he said, his voice low. “There’s something I need to tell you.” She looked up from her work, sensing the seriousness in his tone. “What is it, Abuelo?” “I’ve been hearing things,” he said, glancing toward the window as if to ensure they weren’t being overheard. “Rumors about you and AlexanderNarváez.” Victoria’s heart sank. “What kind of rumors?” “People are talking,” her grandfather said grimly. “They say you’ve caught his attention, and that’s not a good thing. The Narváez family won’t take kindly to this, Victoria. You need to be careful.” Victoria felt a surge of frustration and fear. “I didn’t ask for his attention, Abuelo. I’ve tried to stay away from him, but he keeps coming back.” Her grandfather placed a firm but gentle hand on her shoulder. “Victoria, you need to protect yourself. The Narváez family is powerful, and they won’t hesitate to use that power if they feel threatened.” Victoria nodded, her determination strengthening. She couldn’t allow her feelings for Alexander to cloud her judgment. She had to find a way to end this before it became uncontrollable. The next day, Victoria headed to the estate, determined to confront Alexander and put an end to whatever was developing between them. As she approached the gates, she was surprised to see Elena waiting there, arms crossed and a smug smile on her face. “Well, well,” Elena said, her voice dripping with condescension. “If it isn’t the infamous Victoria. You’ve been causing quite a stir, haven’t you?” Victoria met Elena’s gaze, refusing to be intimidated. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she said evenly. “Oh, don’t play coy,” Elena said, stepping closer. “You’ve managed to capture Alexander’s attention, and I must admit, I’m impressed. But let me make one thing clear, you don’t belong here.” Victoria’s jaw tightened, but she refused to back down. “I never claimed to belong here. I’m just trying to live my life.” Elena’s smile turned cold. “Then I suggest you stay far away from Alexander. He’s mine, Victoria, and I won’t let anyone take him from me.” Victoria felt a surge of anger but forced herself to remain calm. “If Alexander is yours, then you have nothing to worry about,” she said firmly. “I don’t want any trouble.” Elena’s eyes narrowed. “Good. Because if you don’t stay away, I’ll make sure you regret it.” With that, she turned and walked away, leaving Victoria standing at the gates, her hands clenched into fists. Later that evening, as Victoria walked home, she couldn’t shake the unease that Elena’s words had stirred within her. She knew that the other woman's threats were not empty, and she would have to be cautious to protect herself and her family. But as she neared her cottage, she noticed something strange. A shadowy figure lingering near the edge of the woods. Her heart began to race as she quickened her pace, her instincts telling her that something wasn’t right. “Who’s there?” she called out, her voice steady despite her fear. The figure stepped forward, and Victoria’s breath caught in her throat. It was Alexander, his face pale and his eyes filled with desperation. “Victoria,” he said, his voice shaking. “I need your help. Something’s happened, and I don’t know who else to turn to.” Victoria’s mind raced with questions, but before she could respond, a commotion erupted in the distance. Shouts and the sound of galloping horses filled the air, and Victoria realized that whatever trouble Alexander had found himself in was about to engulf them both.
