Chapter Three

Victoria froze at the sound of Alexander's voice. Her heart raced in her chest as she slowly turned to face him. He stood a few feet away, his expression filled with determination and something she couldn't quite understand. “Why did you leave like that?” Alexander asked, his voice firm yet tinged with concern. Victoria’s jaw tightened as she forced herself to hold his gaze. “I didn’t want to interrupt,” she replied curtly. “You seemed… preoccupied.” Alexander frowned, realizing what she meant. “If you’re referring to Elena” “Don’t,” Victoria interrupted sharply. “You don’t owe me explanations, Alexander. You can do whatever you like with whomever you choose. It’s none of my business.” He took a step closer, his eyes searching hers. “But it is your business,” he said earnestly. “You’re the one I’ve been thinking about, not Elena.” Victoria's breath caught in her throat, but she quickly concealed her emotions. "You don't need to lie to me," she said coldly. "I know what people like you think of people like me. I'm just a poor girl who doesn't belong in your world.” Alexander’s expression darkened. “Don’t say that,” he said, his voice low but intense. “You’re so much more than that, Victoria. You’re strong, courageous, and unyielding.” His words struck her like a tidal wave, threatening to shatter the walls she had meticulously built around her heart. But she couldn’t allow herself to fall for him, not when she understood the truth of their situation. “And yet, you’re engaged to Elena,” she said bitterly, the words slipping out before she could stop them. Alexander’s jaw clenched, and for a moment, he looked away. “I’m not engaged to her,” he said finally, his voice laced with frustration. “It’s what my family wants, not what I want.” Victoria shook her head, her heart aching despite herself. “It doesn’t matter what you want,” she said quietly. “In the end, your family will decide for you. That’s how it always is with people like you.” “That’s not true,” Alexander said fiercely, stepping closer until there was only a small distance between them. “I’m not like them, Victoria. I don’t care about wealth or power. All I care about is finding something real, someone real.” His words made her chest tighten, and for a moment, she allowed herself to believe him. But the harsh reality of their situation loomed over her like a storm cloud. “You should go back to your life, Alexander,” she said, her voice trembling slightly. “And I’ll go back to mine. We’re from two different worlds, and nothing can change that.” Before he could respond, Victoria turned and walked away, leaving Alexander standing alone in the bustling marketplace, his heart heavy with frustration and longing. The following weeks were a whirlwind of emotions for both Victoria and Alexander. She tried to immerse herself in her daily routines, focusing on her family and their survival. However, no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t erase the memory of Alexander’s words or the intensity in his eyes when he spoke to her. Alexander, on the other hand, was growing increasingly restless. The more he thought about Victoria, the more he realized he couldn’t simply walk away from her. There was something about her that drew him in, something he couldn’t ignore no matter how much he tried. His family was determined to push him toward Elena. His mother and father constantly reminded him of his responsibilities, emphasizing the advantages of a union with Elena's family. They believed it was essential for preserving their wealth and power, things that Alexander had grown to resent. “Alexander, you need to stop this nonsense,” his mother said one evening as they sat in the grand dining room. “Elena is the perfect match for you. She’s beautiful, intelligent, and from a respectable family. What more could you want?” “I want freedom,” Alexander replied sharply, his frustration boiling over. “I want to make my own choices, not have my life dictated by you and Father.” His mother’s expression hardened. “Freedom doesn’t pay the bills, Alexander. It doesn’t secure our legacy. You need to think about the future.” Alexander pushed his chair back and stood abruptly. “Maybe I don’t care about the future,” he said, his voice cold. “Maybe I just want to live for myself for once.” Without waiting for a response, he stormed out of the room, leaving his mother sitting in stunned silence. One evening, Victoria was returning home from the river, where she had been washing clothes, when she saw a shadowy figure waiting near her cottage. Her heart raced as she recognized Alexander standing there, his silhouette barely visible in the fading light. “What are you doing here?” she asked sharply, setting down the basket of clothes. “I needed to see you,” Alexander replied, his voice filled with urgency. “I can’t stop thinking about you, Victoria.” She crossed her arms, trying to mask the flutter of emotions his presence stirred within her. “You shouldn’t be here,” she said firmly. “If anyone sees you, they’ll think the worst.” “I don’t care what people think,” Alexander said, stepping closer. “All I care about is you. Victoria, please. Just listen to me.” She sighed, her resolve beginning to waver. “What do you want from me, Alexander?” “I want to be with you,” he said, his voice raw with emotion. “I don’t care about our differences or what my family thinks. I just want to be with you.” Victoria’s heart ached at his words, but she couldn’t let herself believe in the possibility of a future with him. “You don’t understand,” she said, her voice trembling. “This can’t work. It doesn’t matter how much you want it, your family will never allow it. And even if they did, people like me don’t belong in your world.” “I don’t care about my family’s approval,” Alexander said fiercely. “I’ll leave it all behind if I have to. None of it matters without you.” Tears welled up in Victoria’s eyes as she shook her head. “You’re being foolish, Alexander. You don’t know what you’re saying.” “I know exactly what I’m saying,” he replied, his voice steady. “And I mean every word.” Before she could respond, the sound of footsteps interrupted them. They both turned to see her grandfather standing in the doorway of the cottage, his expression a mixture of concern and disapproval. “Victoria,” he said sternly, his gaze shifting to Alexander. “What’s going on here?” Victoria quickly wiped her eyes and turned to her grandfather. “It’s nothing, Abuelo,” she said softly. “He was just leaving.” Alexander hesitated, his eyes lingering on Victoria before he nodded. “I’ll go,” he said quietly. “But this isn’t over, Victoria. I won’t give up on you.” With that, he turned and walked away, leaving Victoria standing in the doorway with her grandfather. That night, as Victoria lay in bed, she couldn't shake the feeling that her life was about to change forever. She had tried so hard to keep her distance from Alexander, aiming to protect herself and her family from the consequences of their connection. However, her heart wouldn’t let her move on. As Alexander stood on the balcony of his family’s estate, he gazed out at the moonlit landscape. He had made up his mind to do whatever it took to be with Victoria, even if it meant defying his family and sacrificing everything he had ever known. But neither of them could have predicted the storm that was about to descend upon their lives. In the shadows, Elena watched from a distance, her expression cold and calculating. She had seen enough to understand the growing bond between Alexander and Victoria, and she wasn’t about to let anyone stand in her way. “Let’s see how far your little fairytale goes,” she whispered to herself, a sinister smile spreading across her lips.
