Chapter Two

1324 Words
The days following Victoria’s brief encounter with Alexander passed in a blur. Her life, though filled with daily struggles, seemed simpler before she had crossed paths with him. Now, his face lingered in her thoughts like a fleeting dream she couldn’t forget. She found herself wondering about him more than she cared to admit, despite the warning her grandfather had given her. Her life continued its steady course working hard to care for her grandfather and sister, struggling to make ends meet. The demands of her daily routine left little room for distractions, but Alexander’s image kept creeping into her mind. One afternoon, as Victoria was making her way to the market, she found herself once again near the Narváez estate. She had no intention of going near it, but a strange pull led her toward the estate gates. She hesitated for a moment, standing at the edge of the property, as the large iron gates loomed before her. She was about to turn away when she saw Alexander. He was standing near the fence, his back to her, seemingly lost in thought. Her heart skipped a beat as their eyes met across the distance. Without thinking, she found herself walking toward him. As she approached, he turned to face her, his expression unreadable. There was a moment of silence before he spoke. “Victoria,” he said, his voice soft but full of curiosity. “I didn’t expect to see you again so soon.” Victoria felt a surge of nervousness but forced herself to meet his gaze. “I didn’t come to see you,” she replied, her voice steady despite the fluttering in her chest. “I was just passing by.” Alexander studied her for a moment as if weighing her words carefully. “I see,” he said, his lips curling into a faint smile. “But I’m glad you stopped.” Victoria felt a blush creep up her neck at his words, but she quickly dismissed it. “I should be going,” she said, her hands nervously fidgeting with the hem of her shawl. Before she could turn away, Alexander spoke again. “Wait.” She stopped, her heart pounding in her chest. He took a few steps toward her, his presence commanding yet gentle. “You don’t have to leave,” he said, his voice earnest. “I’ve been thinking about our conversation, and I… I would like to get to know you better.” Victoria was taken aback. Her first instinct was to reject the idea, to walk away and avoid any further entanglements with someone like him. But something in his eyes made her pause. “You don’t even know me,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Alexander’s expression softened. “I know enough,” he replied. “You’re not like the others here. There’s something… real about you.” She didn’t know how to respond to that, so she remained silent, her thoughts swirling. “Please,” Alexander continued, his tone sincere. “I want to understand you better, Victoria. You deserve more than this life, more than the way people treat you.” His words struck a chord deep within her, but she quickly pushed the emotions aside. “I don’t need anyone’s pity,” she said sharply. “I’m fine on my own.” Alexander’s brow furrowed, and he took another step toward her. “I’m not offering pity,” he said, his voice low and intense. “I’m offering something more, respect, and understanding. I can’t change your circumstances, but I can help make your life better if you’ll let me.” Victoria’s heart wavered, but her pride kept her grounded. “I don’t need anyone’s help. Not yours, not anyone’s.” Alexander studied her, his eyes searching hers for any hint of vulnerability. He could see the stubbornness in her, the strength that had carried her through countless hardships. But he also saw the walls she had built around herself, walls that were not easily broken down. “I understand,” he said, his voice quiet but firm. “But I still want you to know that if you ever change your mind, I’ll be here.” Victoria felt her chest tighten, the weight of his words hanging in the air. Without another word, she turned and walked away, leaving Alexander standing at the gates, his eyes following her retreating figure. Later that evening, Victoria sat by the fire in her small cottage, her mind racing with thoughts of Alexander. She couldn’t shake the memory of their conversation, the way he had looked at her, as if he truly cared. But deep down, she knew that nothing could come of it. She was just a poor girl with nothing to offer a man like him. As she sat lost in thought, her sister, Esperanza, entered the room, her eyes bright with excitement. “Victoria !” Esperanza exclaimed. “You won’t believe what I heard today!” Victoria looked up, distracted. “What is it?” “Some of the workers were talking,” Esperanza continued, lowering her voice as if the very mention of the estate could get them into trouble. “They say AlexanderNarváez is planning to marry a woman from a wealthy family. Someone named Elena.” Victoria felt her heart skip a beat at the mention of Elena’s name. Elena was the cousin of Alexander, a woman known for her beauty, her wealth, and her ability to manipulate people to get what she wanted. “Are you sure?” Victoria asked, trying to keep her voice steady despite the wave of emotions crashing over her. Esperanza nodded. “They say it’s already been arranged. That Alexander and Elena are meant to be together. They’re both from wealthy families, and it makes sense. It’s all about business, after all.” Victoria felt a pang of bitterness in her chest. She had known from the start that someone like Alexander would never truly be hers. He was from a world she could never belong to, and the thought of him marrying someone like Elena was a reality she couldn’t escape. “Why are you telling me this?” Victoria asked, her voice cold. Esperanza frowned, sensing her sister’s change in mood. “I thought you should know. I don’t want you to get hurt.” Victoria looked away, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “I’m not some foolish girl who dreams of a charming prince, Esperanza. I know my place.” Her sister didn’t respond, but she placed a gentle hand on Victoria’s shoulder. As the evening wore on, Victoria couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that had settled in her chest. She had been fooling herself. AlexanderNarváez was never going to choose a poor, insignificant girl like her. He was destined for a life of wealth and privilege, and Elena was the perfect match for that. But deep down, a part of her still hoped, still wanted to believe that there was more to Alexander’s feelings than just empty words. The next morning, as Victoria made her way to the market, she caught sight of Alexander from a distance. He was standing with Elena, their heads close together, speaking in hushed tones. Victoria’s heart sank as she watched them exchange a smile, one that was too intimate to ignore. Before she could turn away, Alexander’s eyes met hers. He froze for a moment, his gaze lingering on her, before Elena nudged him and whispered something in his ear. Victoria’s stomach twisted in knots. She had seen enough. Turning on her heel, she hurried away, not wanting to face the truth that was staring her in the face. But as she rounded the corner, a voice called out to her, stopping her dead in her tracks. “Victoria, wait!” She turned to find Alexander standing behind her, his face filled with urgency.
